METO 1010 Online Lab 5. Temperature Instructions: 1) Type your answers in this Microsoft Word file and save your completed lab on your computer. Do not modify the format of the file. 2) Upload your lab on CANVAS by the due date. To upload the file, go to the course homepage and click on “assignments”. Click on the assignment that you want to submit, and on “submit assignment”. In the “file upload” box, click on “choose file” and select the appropriate file. Finally, click on “submit assignment”. Only .doc, .docx, and .pdf files are accepted. 3) In questions that require calculations, you are not required to show every step of your work, but the more detailed your answers are the more likely you are to receive partial credit for wrong answers. 4) Proper units and terminology are always necessary. Mean monthly temperature for Orem (UT) are given below in degrees Fahrenheit. Month Jan Feb March Apr May June July Aug Sept Oct Nov Dec Mean T (°F) 28.6 34.2 44.3 52.5 61.1 70.2 76.5 74.9 65.2 52.2 39.2 30.8 1) Calculate the man annual temperature for Orem and report the value below. Keep two decimal figures. (1 point) Orem mean annual temperature (°F)= 52.48 °F 2) Calculate the mean annual temperature range for Orem and report the value below. (1 point) Orem mean annual temperature range (°F)= 47.9 °F 3) Go to the following website http://coolwx.com/usstats/tempadvstats.php . The map that you see is a map of temperature advection. 1
a) Save the image in your computer and insert it below. State the three factors that affect temperature advection. (2 points) Wind speed, magnitude of temperature gradient, angle between the wind and isotherms b) Locate a region of strong temperature advection (i.e., greater than 1°F/hr; ignore the sign for now). Describe the location of the region. (3 points) At the bottom right corner of Arizona, near the borders of Mexico and New Mexico c) Now go to the temperature map at this website http://coolwx.com/usstats/tempstats.php and to the wind map at this other website http://coolwx.com/usstats/windstats.php . Is the region affected by cold or warm air advection? Explain. (3 points) The region is affected by warm air advection . Such can be induced from the observable factors like the wind blowing from the West to East and the West being hotter in temperature. In other words, the area where the wind is blowing from is hotter and thus carries hot air. 2
d) For each of the three factors that you have identified above, perform an analysis on your region of strong advection.  Basically, you are trying to explain why advection is strong in this location.  You should refer to the maps that you have collected to support your assertions. (4 points) I’d say that the biggest cause of the strong advection in the region is the angle at which the wind hits the isotherms. One can see that the wind is crossing the isotherms at or only just below 90° angle. While wind speed is not so fast, relatively high temperature gradient is a contributing factor as well. The region I pointed out above has uniquely high temperature gradient, especially among those that host the wind to pass through their isotherms vertically. 4) The map on the last page shows a simple temperature pattern. Print the page and draw isotherms using a 10°F interval (you can also draw on the figure directly in Microsoft Word, if you prefer). Start with the 30°F and draw each isotherm up to the 80°F. Make sure you label each isotherm with its temperature. Label the area where the temperature gradient is high with an “H” and areas where the temperature gradient is low with an “L”. Take a picture of your completed isotherm map and insert it below. To draw the isotherms you should first visually scan the data to try to visualize the temperature pattern. Then start to sketch the line. Remember that an isotherm of a certain value will go through a station circle only if that station reports precisely the value of the isotherm being drawn. Otherwise, that particular isotherm should be drawn to keep higher values on one side and lower values on the other. (6 points) I have drawn directly in Microsoft below. 3
