Objective: Students will be able to read I Am Not Going to Get Up Today! by Dr. Suess Supplies: Copies of the book , Youtube Video for an appropriate example Text Types: Narrative (x) Information books () Poetry () Hybrid() Explain what is to be taught: Students will be working on reading with appropriate emotion. When reading it is imperative to read with appropriate feelings and not to read books in a monotone voice. Why is it important to learn: When learning to read, it is also crucial to learn to read with appropriate emotion. Especially when reading aloud to an audience so that the listeners better understand the emotions within the test and the different parts of the story. In addition, it makes listening to a read aloud more engaging. When teaching to read with emotion it also allows students to develop a better understanding of internal expression as readers are able to engage with the text more. When/Where will it be used: Reading with appropriate emotion is a crucial component to reading comprehension as students often engage and pay closer attention to what they are reading and helps students better understand the story. Expression also increases fluency. Modeling: How you think about this or do it. Appropriate model: To start I am going to play the video reading of some of the emotions where the child in the story exclaims that he is not going to school today. I want you to listen to the emotion in the book. While listening to the video follow along in your
books to see if you can guess the emotion that will be used in the pictures. Inappropriate model 1: I am going to read this part of the story again with emotion that is unfitting for the book. My emotions might be the opposite, weird, or incorrect. See if you can identify why it sounds like this. Brief discussion: Find out what the students have observed. Inappropriate model 2: I am going to read the passage again, but this time in a monotone voice. This means that my voice will not change or show any emotion. When I do this see how it changes the story. Are these emotional parts of the story as fun to read or to listen to? Brief discussion: Find out what the children have observed. Brief whole group practice: Now that I have shown you how to read this both correctly and incorrectly let’s practice together. We are going to do this by what is called echo reading. When we echo read, you will listen to me read a portion of the story and once I stop, we will read that portion again, but all together. Use your finger while reading so that we stay together. Remember when we read with emotion it means that the character, we are reading about will not have a monotone voice and when we read we will read with the correct emotion. We read the
characters voice as though he is determined to stay in bed all day no matter what happens. Partner practice: Now, I want you to find your reading partner. I want you to take turns reading to each other and give each other feedback. Feedback is telling your partner how they did with reading part of the story with emotion. I want you to also try reading 1 or 2 lines with the wrong emotion to see if your partner notices and corrects you. If you partner notices talk to each other about why that emotion was incorrect for that part. If your partner does not notice point it out to your partner then explain why it was not the right emotion.
