Our Connection to Time
A Glimpse into Time
Time Capsules are vital to our culture, past, and future. As such, they have evidence and papers dating back centuries directed toward us, their future descendants. Within our current hands, we hold some of the world’s most famous time capsules. One is the world’s oldest, the Boston, Massachusetts Time Capsule. Such a time capsule was found to date back to 1795, with objects dating even further back within the 1600s. The world’s most enormous time capsule, in Seward, Nebraska, was built in 1975. The religious time capsule we call the “Salt Lake Temple Time Capsule” dates back 128 years to 1892. Time Capsules are a valuable part of our history and a form of reaching out through time. As such, you probably wonder what this has to do with you.
What is a Time Capsule?
Like me, you have interacted in a time capsule experiment in grade, middle, or high school or seen one in a show. Either way, it is probably not new to you, but you have yet to
realize how it is essential through the lens of historical contexts within archeology. But what exactly is archeology, and how do time capsules affect such research? Archeology is the research
and study of human history and prehistory through analyzing artifacts and bodily remains. This research advances by furthering our knowledge of our history and how it connects to our current transformations. As such, time capsules fall into the category of artifacts of our past to research for further analysis. A time capsule embodies a message for future generations to get across a purpose or core message—an interaction between history and future generations through an entombed tablet. By now, you are probably wondering what the oldest Time capsule is.
What is the World’s Oldest Time Capsule?
During the fixing of a leaking pipe in Boston, Massachusetts’s state house, what looked like an old copper box a repairman found to be the world’s oldest time capsule, dating back two centuries to the time period of 1795. Not only was this mysterious box a time capsule from 1795,
but three founding fathers also created it. Created by Sam Adams, who was the governor of Massachusetts at the time of the time capsule burial; Paul Reverie, an American revolutionist who was part of the Boston Tea Party and war; and finally, William Scollay, another military officer during the American Revolution from Boston. Pam Hatchfield proved that such a time capsule belonged to them because of the inside items, as one of the damning pieces of evidence was a silver plaque engraved by Paul Reverie himself. Studied even further by Pam Hatchfield, a museum conservator in charge of excavating the time capsule, the item took half a day to delicately open without destroying things inside. Inside the time capsule were coins, letters, photographs, and articles in near-perfect condition. She then further discovered that the Time capsule had been opened and damaged before us
within the year 2014. It was by other observers that the time capsule was opened prior during the
time of 1855, which was fixed by the archeologist during this period, replacing the cowhide container with a copper one. They were even placing new articles in the container before reburying it. For a year, the time capsule was in the Boston, Massachusetts, museum before it was reburied with unique pieces of articles for future generations. This being the world’s oldest time capsule, what could compare?
What is the World’s Biggest Time Capsule?
Located in Seward, Nebraska, it is the world’s most enormous time capsule and is a testament to humanity’s creativity and form of preservation of history. In 1975, the residents of Seward worked together on this mass-induced project to save their local history and leave a global mark on the world. This giant effort was led by Harold Keith Davis, a businessman who envisioned this big-time capsule. The time capsule is 45 feet tall and 22 feet in diameter, made of
a concrete structure against the sands of time. The project was created with the community spirit and involved many neighborhood residents, from organizations to local businesses and simple next-door neighbors. Made the same year, the time capsule was also sealed the same year in 1975 to open the year 2025, marking a century and a half of Seward’s local history. Inside the Time Capsule is a wide variety of objects ranging from letters and photographs to machinery and
personal possessions that hold valuable memories and the history of the residents. These all provide a unique close-up into the town’s cultures, values, and aspirations during such an era.
Through the years, the Time Capsule has dealt with challenges in the form of preservation as the concrete was exposed to elements such as moisture and temperature changes, posing a threat to its innards contents. and his successor, Brigham Young (Hardy, 2000.) The capsule served as a significant piece of history for the LDS Church, symbolizing their faith and commitment as members of the religion.
The Time capsule was constructed of copper, containing many historical items and documents as
a glimpse into the religion’s foundations and past. The time capsule's contents are $10 gold pieces and silver half dollars from the 1850s, all of which reflect our economic status and values within the 1850s. Within the time capsule was also a U.S. flag and a copy of the Book of Mormon, the central text of the LDS faith, once again showing their religious purpose (Salt Lake
City Messenger, 1993.)
As can be seen through the time capsule, it was placed during a historic time of religious fervor, and founders and believers sought to construct a grand temple as a testament to their devotion and faith. The Salt Lake Temple is evidence of this, with its Gothic and Romanesque architecture serving as a testament to its early church members, as the capsule itself symbolizes that legacy (Hartley, 2015.) As such, this symbol has stood firm with the LDS church members and historians, preserving a heritage within the religion.
The Importance of Time Capsules
As such, time capsules are a unique and valuable part of our history, culture, and heritage, this being a connection between our past and future generations. They serve historical importance as artifacts that archaeologists use to deepen our understanding of the world and human history through their comparisons of time transformations. The world’s oldest time capsule from Boston, Massachusetts, dates back to 1795, created by the historical figures of Sam Adams, Paul Revere, and William Scollay, filled with historical artifacts and articles. The world’s largest Time Capsule is more recent and has yet to be opened. It is located in Seward, Nebraska, with its massive concrete structure sealed in 1975, filled with the local culture, values,
and aspirations. The Salt Lake Temple time capsule in Salt Lake City, Utah, is a religious time capsule, a portrayal of people’s beliefs dating back 128 years. These time capsules all portray an example of our history, culture, and ideas from our past and our transformations for our future.
