ENGL 202
Week 7: Portfolio Project Final Submission I will be graduating in April of 2024 for an associate degree in medical reimbursement and coding. My two career paths I am looking forward to pursuing in the future are medical records technician and medical billing specialist. The reason for my options is because I did some research and my reason for going to school for medical reimbursement and coding is because I found that The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) projects that employ people in the medical records field and health information technicians, including medical coders, will grow
9% between 2020 and 2030, which is much faster than the average for all professions. This strong job outlook can make it easier for qualified coders to find work. I was told there would be difficulties in my chosen field but one of the most difficult aspects of medical coding is knowing the thousands of codes from numerous code sets that are updated on a regular basis.
There are many different aspects in a career as a medical reimbursement and coder. One of the most important aspects of medical coding is ensuring that patients receive the correct diagnosis. This can often be a challenge, as many medical conditions have similar symptoms. Medical coders must be able to correctly interpret a physician's notes and assign the correct code to the condition. Medical billing and coding are an important part of the healthcare system because it enables care providers to accurately bill insurance providers as well as gather useful data about the treatments, procedures and patient experience. The greatest benefit of medical coding is that I’ll have opportunities for advancement. As an experienced certified coder, I would
be able to develop skills and knowledge that are valuable in many healthcare business roles, including practice management, medical auditing, compliance, clinical documentation improvement, education, and more. To be a successful medical coder you must be accurate and pay careful attention to even the smallest points of a medical record or insurance claim. Coding each medical procedure without making mistakes is essential, and you'll also need to find any previous errors in patient records. The skill’s I would like to gain from coding is Empathy because Empathy gives you the ability to comprehend and be sensitive to other people's needs and emotions, also Creativity, Logic, and Problem-solving are also very important.
