Assignment 3
Length
1,000–1,200 words
Value
15% of the final grade
General instructions
1.
Follow the format according to the instructions in the Syllabus.
2.
Follow the guidelines on essay writing and grading in the Syllabus.
3.
Pay attention to the comments that your instructor made on your other essays to avoid making the
same writing mistakes, and proofread carefully to eliminate errors. Consult your writing manual
and/or your instructor.
4.
Whichever topic you choose, be sure to support your assertions with evidence drawn from the
relevant text(s). The use of secondary sources is optional, but if you consult such sources,
choose them judiciously and cite according to MLA conventions.
5.
Consult your instructor for direction, help, etc. Communicating with other students on the course
site can also be an excellent source of ideas.
Write an essay on
one
of the following topics:
1. Female characters in
Generals Die in Bed
act more heroically than do the male characters. Agree
or disagree with this statement providing reasons for your opinion. You should first define
‘heroism’ as you will use it in your essay. You may also choose to include those women who
appear in the novel as well as those who are mentioned but absent from it.
2.
One of the main themes in
Generals Die in Bed
is the opposition of illusion and reality. Many
“realities” about war are shown to be illusions as the novel progresses. Discuss
three
such
illusions and show how the narrator’s experiences expose the reality behind those illusions.
3.
In David Malouf's “The Kyogle Line,”
the narrator’s point of view is that of an adult looking back at
significant events that have already happened. Compare
one
other short story that you studied
that features a narrator who tells a story from a similar point of view.
4.
If Edgar Allan Poe’s “The Cask of Amontillado” might be considered conventional even
predictable in its plot development, how might we consider
two
other short stories
unconventional? Compare those stories with Poe’s to form your argument. You may choose to
discuss plot, character, setting, or a combination of those terms as the basis of your discussion.
5. In Brian Friel’s
Translations
, effective communication between people is made difficult if not
impossible because of language barriers. What other barriers to communication exist in the play?
In what ways do the characters overcome those obstacles, if at all?
6.
Near the end of
Translations
, Hugh says, “it is not the literal past, the ‘facts’ of history, that shape
us, but images of the past embodied in language” (66). Use Hugh’s statement to discuss the
importance of naming and re-naming in the play.
