1 Interviewing Dr. Freeman-Walker Emily A. Giron Cruz Department of English, Southeastern University ENGL 1233: English Composition II Professor Luanza Gladden February 12, 2022
2 Interviewing Dr. Freeman-Walker Asking questions can sometimes give you a new picture of the idea that you had in mind. On February 8, 2022, I interviewed Dr. Freeman-Walker, a professor at Southeastern University who teaches in the Criminal Justice department. With my topic being how social media affects crimes, Dr. Freeman-Walker was a credible source to answer these questions. Dr. Freeman- Walker beings by pointing out that there is no clear cut when it comes to law enforcement since every case is unique and many factors go into the situation (Freeman-Walker, 2022). It is difficult to tell how much social media plays a role in crimes, it all depends on what the crime was and if any posts were made online by those who committed it or those who knew that a crime was going to be committed. Dr. Freeman-Walker believes that all social media posts regarding crimes could be used to promote safety to others, but just like any other social media post, it all comes down to how the post is formatted and how the information is being delivered to the viewers (Freeman-Walker, 2022). An online post could be credible or uncredible, “it depends on what information is being provided on social media and by whom” (Freeman-Walker, 2022). Social media posts are often taken literally, but there are posts out there that could spread false information, as Dr. Freeman-Walker states, viewers should be asking themselves: “is it an individual that is knowledgeable, impartial, and has all the facts/information?” (2022). Anyone can get information from a wide variety of topics simply by using social media. However, if there is an ongoing criminal case, it is important for both the suspect(s) and victim(s) to keep information out of social media unless it is law enforcement asking the public for help with information about the case or help in identifying a suspect that could be involved
3 (Freeman-Walker, 2022). If a criminal case ever reaches the process of a court trial social media posts could be “useful and beneficial” (Freeman-Walker, 2022). Social media can often be used to harass and threaten people on there, it can be used as a source to expose and blackmail as well. Not all posts about other people are classified as harassment or be considered as a criminal offense, it all depends on the context that it was intended to be in, “individuals should be careful to what they post, privacy, and who you follow or allow to follow” (Freeman-Walker, 2022). Social media can be a great tool when used responsibly and appropriately, although not everyone will use social media in a responsible way (Freeman-Walker, 2022). As social media continues to grow throughout the years, law enforcement is now able to connect with the community in a new way. There may be certain aspects to social media that not everyone agrees with, Dr. Freeman-Walker believes that when law enforcement is able to provide information about cases or occurring instances it is a way that social media can help prevent crimes from happening in the community (Freeman-Walker, 2022). Agencies all around the country have begun to use a wide variety of social media outlets to give the public information on different topics such as ongoing cases, community awareness, prevention or even to ask for help (Freeman-Walker, 2022). Social media is not always used as a form of entertainment, mainstream media may still be around, but, social media has evolved the way that news gets out to the public, “younger generations do not watch the news or read the paper, but rather obtain their information through social media – one more way to provide information to the community” (Freeman-Walker, 2022).
