Results/Re-
assessment
The Assessor will grade the assessment and record the result on the front page of this document (S) – Satisfactory if all observable behaviours are correct and (NS) not satisfactory if any areas are left incorrect
Feedback will be provided on either result
Where a student receives a ‘NS – Not Satisfactory’ result, the assessor will discuss the area of the non-compliant observable behaviour and an opportunity given for re-
assessment. This may be through direct observation or a different method of assessment e.g. verbal/oral questioning, problem solving exercise.
If the outcome is again not satisfactory the student result will be deemed (NYC) not yet competent. Additional feedback will be given, and a time agreed upon for further
assessment after additional training and skills practice has taken place, this information will be recorded, dated and signed in the re-assessment area on the last page of this document
Where all the assessment tasks have been graded (S) Satisfactory, the student will be deemed C – Competent for the practical component and the result recorded and
signed in the area indicated on the last page of this document

Assessment 1 – Questioning
Written Assessment
1.
Identify five (5) important items of personal safety protectionor PPE when removing, inspecting, repairing and refitting light vehicle tyres and tubes?
1
Safety Glasses/Goggles: Eye protection is crucial to shield your eyes from debris, dust, and any potential splashes of chemicals or tire sealants. Safety glasses or goggles with side shields can prevent
eye injuries.
2
Gloves: Sturdy work gloves are necessary to protect your hands from sharp objects, such as tire beads,
rims, and tools. Nitride or leather gloves are suitable for this task.
3
Steel-Toed Boots: Wearing steel-toed or composite-toed safety boots will safeguard your feet from potential impacts, heavy objects, and punctures while working around vehicle tires and tools.
4
Respirator/Mask: When dealing with tire repair or inspection in dusty environments or using chemicals, it's essential to wear a respirator or mask to protect your lungs from inhaling harmful particles or fumes.
5
Ear Protection: Tire repair and replacement work can be noisy, especially when using air compressors or impact wrenches. Ear protection, such as earplugs or earmuffs, helps prevent hearing damage from prolonged exposure to loud noise.

Air escaping from a tyre being deflated is under high pressure. The sudden pressure drop releases a jet of air that can inflict serious injury. What serious injury can occur?
A.
This escaping air can propel dirt and debris at high speed in your eyes.
B.
Particles of dirt and pieces of metal, blown by the high-pressure air, can penetrate your skin.

25.
All of the following are types of tyre designed except. A.
Bias-ply.
B.
Belted bias radial ply.
C.
Belted radial ply.
D.
Belted bias ply.
26.
Describe the structural difference between a bias-ply and radial-ply tyre.
Bias-Ply Tires:
Bias-ply tires have plies (layers of cord material, typically nylon) that run diagonally across the tire, from bead to bead.
The cords crisscross at an angle, often at 30-40 degrees, creating a crisscross pattern.
The multiple plies provide sidewall and tread strength, making bias-ply tires robust and durable.
These tires tend to be stiffer and provide a smoother ride for some applications but are less flexible and generate more heat during operation.
Radial-Ply Tires:
Radial-ply tires have plies that run from bead to bead at a 90-degree angle, perpendicular to the centerline of the tire.
The cords are typically made of steel or polyester and are designed to provide greater flexibility and better contact with the road surface.
Radial tires have a single, sturdy belt or radial ply under the tread that contributes to a more stable and comfortable ride.
They generate less heat and offer improved fuel efficiency and handling characteristics compared to bias-
ply tires.
27.
Explain the purpose of the wheel rim drop centre and safety ridges.
The wheel rim drop center helps in easier tire mounting and removal.
Safety ridges prevent tire beads from slipping off the rim when deflated, enhancing safety.
These features facilitate safe tire maintenance and better handling in low-pressure situations.
28.
The tyre can be repaired from the inside using what two (2) methods?
1
Plug and Patch Combination: This method involves both plugging the puncture hole and applying a patch to the inner liner of the tire. The plug seals the hole from the inside, while the patch reinforces the Document Name:

Missing Words: airtight, defective, hole, inflated, inner, inward, leaking, lining, pneumatic, protection, seal, shape, special, tread, tubeless, tubes, valve There are two basic types of ____Pneumatic________ tyres: those that use inner ______tubes_________ and those that do not. The latter are called _____tubeless__________ tyres and are about the only type used on passenger cars today. A tubeless tyre has a soft inner lining that keeps air from ____leaking___________ between the tyre and rim. On some tyres, this inner lining can form a ____seal___________ around a nail or other object that punctures the _____tread__________. A self-sealing tyre holds in air even after the object is removed. The key to this sealing is a ____lining___________ of sticky rubber compound on the inside of the tread area that will seal a _____hole__________ up to 3/16 inch (4.76 mm). A tubeless tyre air ______valve_________ has a central core that is spring-loaded to allow air to pass ____inward___________ only, unless the pin is depressed. If the core becomes _____defective__________, it can be unscrewed and replaced. The ___airtight____________ cap on the end of the valve provides extra ____protection___________ against valve leakage. A tubeless tyre is mounted on a _____special_________ rim that retains air between the rim and the tyre casing when the tyre is ____inflated___________.
A tubed tyre has a separate ____inner___________ tube which is fitted into the tyre when it is mounted to the tyre rim. When inflated with air, the tube maintains the ______shape_________ of the tyre under the load of the vehicle.

38.
Explain what the buffing cup rasp is used for?
Puncture Preparation: When a tire has a puncture, the damaged area must be cleaned and roughened to ensure proper
adhesion of the repair material (patch or plug). The buffing cup rasp features abrasive surfaces that remove debris, contaminants, and damaged rubber from the inner surface of the puncture area.
Enhanced Adhesion: The roughened surface created by the buffing cup rasp provides a textured, clean, and
adhesive-friendly environment for the repair material to bond securely. This is crucial for creating a long-
lasting and airtight seal.
Smooth and Even Finish: After using the buffing cup rasp, the repair technician can apply the patch or plug to the prepared area, effectively sealing the puncture and restoring the tire's integrity.
39.
What is the T-handle inserting tool used for?
A T-handle inserting tool is used for precisely placing repair plugs into punctured tires, ensuring a secure and airtight seal. It guides the plug into the puncture and helps maintain tire integrity.

41.
What is a tyre pressure gauge used for?
A tire pressure gauge is used to check and ensure that the air pressure in vehicle tires is at the recommended level for safety, performance, and fuel efficiency. It helps prevent underinflation and overinflation, supports regular maintenance, and promotes optimal tire longevity.
42.
Explain how to use a tyre pressure gauge?
Remove the valve cap and insert the gauge onto the valve stem.
Read the gauge or digital display for the tire's pressure.
Compare the reading to the recommended pressure, adjust if needed, and replace the valve cap. Repeat for all tires.
43.
Consider the various post-fitting checks that you would make to a repaired tyre?
After a tire repair, check:
Inflation pressure with a gauge.
Visual integrity and signs of damage.
Conduct a leak test and ensure proper balance.
