Running Record Reading Assessment
Running records enables the teacher to record and assess a child’s reading behavior as the
child reads from a book, providing insights into the child’s reading ability and helping assign the
child to an appropriate developmental level in line with assessment. Running records are
designed for children in the elementary grades, encompassing early to upper elementary levels
(Levin, Porath, Anderson, and Mackenzie).
In terms of administration, the teacher begins by securing the materials needed, including
the text, the record form, pencil, timer, and recording device (Levin, Porath, Anderson, and
Mackenzie). The first step then providing directions for the child to read the text aloud while the
teacher sits beside the child to view the text and child’s eye and finger motions as he or she
reads. The next step involves recording reading accuracy as the student orally reads the text,
whereby the teacher marks each instance the child reads a word correctly as well as each instance
the child reads a word incorrectly. Interventions should be minimized, restricted to aspects such
as asking the child to pause if reading too fast for the recording to take place or helping the child
after some time if he or she is unable to continue (Learning A-Z).
The frequency of administration depends on the child’s level of reading. For emergent
readers in lower elementary levels, the reading assessment is administered every 2 to 4 weeks
(Learning A-Z). Administration frequency reduces with advancing stages of reading, going to

every 4 to 6 weeks for upper emergent readers, every 6 to 8 weeks for early fluent readers, and
every 8 to 10 weeks for fluent readers (Learning A-Z).
Running record results are calculated based on accuracy, error rate, and self-correction
scores (Levin, Porath, Anderson, and Mackenzie). Error rate is calculated as a ratio based on
dividing total read word number by total errors made (Learning A-Z). Accuracy rate is calculated
by subtracting total errors from total words read and then dividing by total words read, before
multiplying by 100 to get a percentage. Self-correction rate is a ratio calculated by adding errors
and self-correction before dividing by self-correction (Learning A-Z).
