Test each statement for consistency with others. Do not change subject and modifier in the process. Identify historical elements in the original writing. Scan the text verse-by-verse for predicates. Identify the text subject in one word. This answers the question, What is the text writer talking about? - Comfort Identify the modifier to your subject in one word. This answers the question, How does the text writer limit the scope of his treatment of the subject? - Despite facing trials, the Gospel message continues to progress Using some form of the subject/modifier words, write a working title for your emerging sermon. - Find solace in knowing that amidst trials, the Gospel is advancing Identify elements of the historical setting of the original writing of the text: Writer, speaker or key character: - Paul Secondary character, hearers or readers: - The church at Philippi - Those who preached the Gospel, whether with pure or impure motives Tone or purpose of text: - To alleviate the concerns of the church members regading Paul’s situation Occasion, situation, or circumstances: - At the time of writing this epistle to the church at Philippi, Paul finds himself being confined in a Roman jail Literary features, genres, figurative language: - Paul refers to his “Chains in Christ” as he employs a metaphorical interpretation of Paul’s physical confinement to illustrate the depth of his connection and devotion to Christ Write the text idea statement using the subject and modifier , plus elements of the original writing of the text. - Despite Paul’s personal hardships and confinement in prison, do not allow my circumstances to dampen your spirits. Be assured that the Gospel message, centered around Christ, will continue to progress and thrive Write the sermon idea by adopting the wording of the textual idea. Omit the historical trappings and make it a present-tense statement of a universal theological principle. Make sure it contains the subject/modifier . - Do not lose heart! God will always prevail! Write a purpose statement for the sermon with what you would like to see in response to the ideas of the text. - The objective of this sermon is to uplift those are currently facing challenging trials and circumstances by assuring them that God is actively involved in their lives. Through this sermon, they will come to realize that despite their hardships, they are always on the winning side with God, and if they observe carefully, they will witness His influence and guidance in their lives
