Part 1 Proposal
Tile: International Night
Description:
This is an event where students and families will take a “trip around the world”. All students and
families will receive a paper passport book for them to get stamped to the different countries. There will be booths in the auditorium of different countries. The staff will ask as host to these different countries and ideally these will be in collaboration with the families of the students. These booths will have different food, activities and informational pamphlets about their selected
countries. The families will walk around experiencing these different countries and get their passports stamped at each booth.
Rationale:
This event will give students and their families to feel connected with their community by seeing
their country represented at this event. This will also allow families of different culture to build a deeper understanding and sense of community with one another.
The educators will also get improved understanding of the cultures so they can improve their cultural application in the classroom. By integrating experiences like this into long-term curriculum around culture and language, you can create opportunities for authentic and nuanced touchpoints with your students’
cultures to promote deeper and richer learning (Accelerator, 2022
).
Agenda:
This event will take place 2/23/23 from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM at the school auditorium.
Materials and Equipment:
Auditorium will need to be cleared so that it is able to be used for the event. Table and chairs for
the families to eat the food and beverages. These tables and chairs will also be used for the
booths that will be representing the different countries. Paper passports for the students and families. Food and beverages for the different countries.
Part 2 Cultural Connections
Teachers and staff becoming familiar with the cultures of the students will lead to a more welcoming school environment. Familiarity with ELL families' cultural traditions will provide teachers a base from which to build background knowledge and create educational opportunities for other students and foster a sense of respect among students for their peers (Clindstrom, 2020)
. This event will also make help teacher design lessons that will build on the background knowledge that students already have from their culture. The students and their families will also feel their ideas and culture respected when they are seen being represented at this event. The students will also feel more respect for each other with an increased understanding of their ideas and language.
Community and family involvement is shown to be linked to student achievement and outcomes. This event gets students, and their families involve which will likely lead to improved
student success. Strong communication between school staff and families is important in any school and has special relevance for schools committed to anti-bias education (Learning, 2022). Inviting students and their families to share their experiences increases communication and trust between school, staff and families. This event makes it clear that everyone is participating for the best interests of the students.
All these cultures being represented will provide a welcoming environment to students and their families. This will also cultivate a student’s sense of belonging in their school. When students feel a sense of belonging in school, it can increase their educational success and motivational outcomes in multiple ways, and teachers can help create this feeling of belonging

by building connections between classroom and community (Bowen, 2021
). Seeing their beliefs and country being represented makes them feel like they are a part of the school too. The event will also allow staff members to get to know their students better and use the knowledge in the classroom. This removes barriers to learning and improves student outcomes.
This event will support the role that family and community practices have in influencing language learning. This will make families more motivated in helping their students become more motivated in learning the language. If student see the parent explaining their culture in English this will motivate them to pick up the language. This even will also help families feel like their culture is being respected and, will be more willing to work with teachers in helping their students acquire the language. This will also allow the families to network and find some resources that may help them learn the language as well.
Asset based learning is when the strengths of the learner are focused on rather than the weaknesses. In this event, students get to talk about their culture, language and experiences. This helps them build confidence and, focuses on what they do know about. This helps them feel validated and gives them a boost of self-esteem. This makes they feel like they can achieve and be successful.
