Part 1 Interview
How do you support and celebrate cultural diversity within instruction?
I acknowledge all cultures in the classroom. If we are talking about parties, I ask
them what customs and traditions they carry out at their parties. During
holidays ask the students how they celebrate and ask them to share traditions or
stories. I also select reading materials that are from authors of different cultural
back grounds or readings that have to do with a variety of culture.
How do you leverage home language and cultural assets?
Using knowledge that students already have mastered from their culture is
imperative to the classroom experience for ELLs. I select vocabulary that sound
similar in the English language as their home language and mean the same
thing. This uses the language they already know to help them master English in
a more efficient way. I also let them choose the way they prefer to demonstrate
mastery in the skills that are being worked on. If they feel more comfortable
completing assignment using a visual rather than an essay, than that removes a
barrier to showing mastery.
How do you show responsiveness to the different strengths, needs, and identities of all
ELLs, including special needs?
I make accommodations in the classroom for all my special needs and ELL
students. I use many visuals during instruction in my classroom using pictures,
charts, and visual cues. It is also important to learn what the students’ interests
are and craft lessons around them when possible. This motivates the students in
my lessons to learn and, hold their attention for the duration of the lesson. I also
make a note of the strengths and weaknesses of the students’ English
proficiency and devise differentiated learn plans to accommodate the different
levels of English mastery in the classroom.
How do you demonstrate understanding of the social, emotional, and cultural needs of
students when establishing classroom routines and procedures?
I am sensitive to the needs of my students by doing the research to know what is
expected and accepted in different cultures. Things such as eye contact and
gestures can lead to misunderstanding if you do not know the cultural norms. For
an example some cultures see it as impolite to look at another person you do not
know personally in the face. If a student will not look me in the face, I could
easily think they are being disrespectful. The classroom routines and procedures
are made with the class at the beginning of the year. Taking the student advice in
this will make it more likely that the students will feel comfortable with the
routine in my classroom.
How do you go about giving student religious accommodations?
Before and after school hours students are free to engage in religious practice. If students
need to participate in religious practices during the school day; they are required to
submit documentation to the school office. Students are excused from class for their
practices if they have this documentation submitted.
How do you encourage students to keep their culture while learning a new one?
I make my classroom feel like an inviting place for all cultures. I do this by having flags
of different countries hung up around the classroom. I also have representation in the
reading I select from my classroom. I also have cultural days in my classroom where the
students will bring a food of heritage and share stories about their culture.

Part 2 Reflection
During my observation me and my maintain discussed many methods to apply
cultural competence in the classroom. She kept mentioning that it is important to
understand your students and always be open to learning about their cultures. This
prevents misunderstanding between you and your students. Also setting the tone of a
welcoming environment from the moment the student walk into your classroom assists
students in building that trust. I observed the students in my mentor class period knew the
routine and, would go through the classroom procedures without much redirecting from
the teacher. The student worked well in their groups and seemed to respect each other.
The student would also assist each other if they were more English proficient than some
of their other peers. I would walk around and assist these groups and have them repeat
certain words that they were struggling with. Repetition help student acquire language
because, the student will more likely remember the words their learning. The student
were very open to my help and, I was pleased to been able to work with them. I already
am a person that takes interests in learning about different customs and religions around
the world. These observations have made me realize how important it is for all people to
try their best to understand each other. I would make my classroom environment one that
celebrates diversity through including different culture in the lesson plans. I will do this
by selecting a variety of material that are written by authors from different cultures and
that represent cultures from around the world. There will also be opportunities for
students to share their cultures by having days that would celebrate them. I realize how
important representation is in the classroom and giving the best diverse educational
experience.
