Part: 1 Interview
What are some strategies you use to teach foundational reading skills (concepts of print,
phonological awareness, phonics, and fluency) to ELLs?
Read to the students out load and have them follow along with the text. Teaching phonics in context; this means to teach them whole words and have them use the words
in the context of the material. Having times during the day where students listen to audio books to help with vocabulary enhancement and to contextual connections. Illustrations that are next to the words also helps with fluency. This helps students have
a visual to make a connection with the word.
What strategies do you use for vocabulary development and student practice?
Using visuals like picture books with words next to it and flash cards. Listening to song in English and have them follow along with the lyrics on a worksheet. Make them they need in English and if they don’t now to then I model it for them and make the student repeat. Students must be immersed in English.
What are some strategies you use to teach the elements of language (phonetics, phonology, morphology, lexicon, semantics, syntax, and pragmatics) to ELLs?
Sequencing story strips in one strategy that I use. The students would have to put the sentences in the order of events. This helps with semantics because, this is the order of words.
How do you use Response to Intervention (RTI) or Multitiered Systems of Support (MTSS) in ELL instruction?
RTI is not used in instruction for ELL students when they first come into the school System. They put the students in the ESOL program for the language barrier. RTI is used when is determined that a student needs other interventions. I normally refer students when they are not making progress in the language at all. This may be sign that there are other barriers to That are making it difficult for them to learn.
What instructional strategies are most effective in instruction ELL students in English?
Modeling and repetition are the most effective instructional strategies. Text that contains repetitive phrases is also effective because, this will help the student remember phrases for them to use in reading, writing, and speaking in English.

Part 2 Observation
In my observations, my mentor was doing a reading and sequencing activity. My mentor went over some vocabulary that has to do with sequencing and transitions. Then she would ask the student questions like “what did you do first today?”. In this activity the teacher read a story to the students, and they were to follow along with the reading material. My mentor teacher would them ask questions about the material using gestures and pointing at visuals for the students to refer to. The mentor then gave
an example of sequencing by asking the class so what happens at a party and then asks in what order do the events occur in. After this activity the students were given strips of sentences for them to sequence. They were to sequence these strips in the order of events in the story. The differentiation for preemergent students was for these sentences to have pictures for them to sequence. I was assisting my mentor by going around the room and, giving individual time to students that were struggling with this activity. I would read them the text again and walk them through the activity. The student could refer to the text to sequence these sentences. This helps to assess whether
the students understand what was read to them and make connections with the language
through activities that they do every day. This will also ensure that they grow their comprehension and vocabulary to improve fluency in the English language. I would use
this in the classroom to expand their vocabulary and increase understanding of the English language.
