Introduction
For the past eight years, I have been working in Radiology as an Xray and CT
technologist. For years I have been thinking about going back to school to obtain my Bachelor’s
degree even though I wasn’t sure what exactly I would do with it. Recently, I realized I wanted to
use my future Bachelor’s degree to become a Radiology Manager. A Radiology Manager’s job is
to manage and coordinate the activities of assigned radiology supervisors, managers, radiologic
technologists, medical sonographers, and clerical personnel at assigned locations. Also prepare
and manage the department budgets, ensure efficient staffing among locations, and ensure
purchases of radiology equipment are cost effective and meet quality standards. While working
as a radiology manager it will also be my job to research and promote radiology changes and
advances. By becoming a radiology manager I will be able to use both my radiology degree and
my bachelors degree to run a radiology department and help increase satisfaction of employees
and patients.
Current Career Research
While searching Capella’s Summons for articles, I came across an article called
Exploring Past to Present Shielding Guidelines. This article explores the data and supporting
evidence for the 2019 statement by the American Association of Physicists in Medicine that
recommends limits to the routine use of fetal and gonadal shielding in medical imaging (Stearns,
2023). As a result the use of patient shielding during medical imaging did not reduce dose, and in
certain instances, increased dose received by patients during computed tomography, fluoroscopy,
or dental imaging (Stearns, 2023). Up to this point in time, shielding patients when possible was
the standard for medical imaging. As a radiology manager, it would be my job to announce
shielding changes to my department and be able to show them evidence to support the change.
The resource is credible because it is a peer reviewed journal article that includes proven
information.
Next, while searching on google, I found an article regarding the American Cancer
Society’s 2023 guidelines for Low Dose Lung Cancer Screening CTs. Prior to 2023, a patient
was only eligible for the screening CTs if they were between the ages of 50-77, smoked at least
20 pack years, and is either a current or former smoker that quit less than 15 years ago.
According to the article, patients are now eligible between the ages of 50-80, smoked at least 20
pack years, and are current or former smokers with no cut off regarding when they quit smoking
(McDowell, 2023). As a Radiology manager, it would be my job to update the CT policy and
make the policy change known to all radiology staff and any ordering providers. The American
Cancer Society is a credible source for this information because they are the ones that make the
guidelines for lung cancer screening CTs.
Conclusion
While working as a radiology manager, part of my job will be to keep up on current
research which will change how myself or coworkers perform our jobs. Our number one goal is
to keep patients safe while giving them the care they deserve, so any research that helps make
that happen will benefit everyone involved. Keeping up on research and trends will help prepare
myself for my career in radiology management because they are things that I will need to
understand and communicate to my department.
