Compare and Contrast
The Compare/ Contrast Essay
First, let's explain compare and contrast:
When we compare, we show our readers a subject's similarities.
When we contrast, we show our readers a subject's differences.
Compare and Contrast essays are learning–process essays. You learn about your subject as you
gather and organize information.
This type of essay takes a bit of organization, and it's this organizational process, this gathering of
facts, that helps you learn as you go.
You will create lists of qualities or traits that each of your subjects has, and as you do this, you will
discover insights to your subject that, at first glance, you may not have realized were there.
It's like buying a new shirt. The moment you spread it out on

And you will either compare or contrast, not both. Be careful, sometimes going point by point can
make your writing sound tedious and repetitive. Watch your language and transition words. Use
several points at a time.
Ending: As in the argumentative essay, bring it all together. Allow your ending to go back to your
thesis. Use the transitional words on the next page to help your paper's coherence. Transitions and
other connecting words and connecting sentences should be used throughout.
Remember: There are no hard and fast rules as to how many comparisons or contrasts you should
offer. For a thorough look into your subject, you must offer enough comparisons or contrasts or both
to make a valid statement.
Transitional Words (Conjunctival Adverbs)
Use these words to help you connect your thoughts, your sentences, and your paragraphs:

Comparison And Contrast Essay Topics
Chapter 16, Comparison and Contrast, explains the purpose and functions of comparison and/or
contrast essays as well as how to use them in students' essays. Comparison and contrast means
finding similarities, differences, or both. Comparison and contrast essays commonly have three
purposes. First, they are important in expressing ideas. For example, I want to talk about my ideas
about hip–hop and rap music so I compare and contrast them. The second purpose is to inform
people. I may want to tell the audience that there are many similarities in two different religions.
Third, I can persuade people through comparing and contrasting two things. For instance, I will
argue that reading e–books is better than printed books by comparing and contrasting

How to Write a Compare and Contrast Essay
Instructions of How to Write a Compare and Contrast Essay
1
First look at the items you are supposed to compare and contrast. Do you understand them? If you
are writing an essay outside of class, look them up. Start with your text book but also look at your
notes from class, and even go and check them out at Wikipedia. If you are taking a test, and can't
look things up, pause and think over what these things mean. The next two steps will help you
remember.
2
Make a list of ways the two items are the same. This is the "compare" part of a compare and contrast
essay
. (For an in class essay, it will be good if you can bring in extra paper. If you can't, you can
make some notes on the back of your blue book.)

If you feel they are more different than the same, start by comparing the similarities.
7
Now get to your point of view. If you are writing a classic "
five paragraph essay
" you may want to
spend a whole paragraph pointing out what is wrong with the arguments you made for the other
side. If don't have to meet a specific number of paragraphs, you can just get straight to supporting
your own point of view. Look at your list items that support you, and write about them all, and why
they are important.
8
With compare and contrast essays, the conclusion will be a lot like the introduction. You summarize
what you just said. You may find that some points came up in writing that you hadn't put in your
intro. This is a good time to refer back to those.
9
If this is not an in–class essay test, you should try to set the essay aside after you finish, so you can
go back later with your mind fresh. You may come up with a few other items you want to talk about
on your compare or contrast list. You may come up with a better way to write your introduction or
conclusion.

Men vs Women (Compare and Contrast) Essays
As the age old saying goes, "Men Are from Mars, Women are from Venus". The conflicting views of
men and women have been questioned for centuries, noting how men and women differ in emotion,
affection, and communication.
Women tend to be more emotional and rational then men, whereas men are far less emotional and
react on impulse. The different understanding of the ways that each sex communicates is still to be
studied. Women tend to react more emotionally than men, resulting in submerging themselves, mind
body and soul into making decisions. Meanwhile men, impulsively react to situations for the sake of
having a reason to do so. Men see women as less competent to making decisions that involve a lot of
thought, and this is due to women's

When the opposite sex does not understand the other on a certain issue, problems and disagreements
arise. When one person has disentanglement in views, everyone involved is affected because people
tend to feel misconstrued in what they believe is right. This is a significant problem because, if men
and women cannot understand each other, the essence of communication is lost on many levels, in
terms of the work place, love, life, and as well as affairs. Miscommunication in relationships is often
a result of breakups and unhealthy relationships. Women are often much more affected by the ways
that men communicate and resolve issues. Fighting in relationships is a representation of not fully
understanding your mate. People in relationships argue all the time and those arguments are usually
based on a misunderstanding. Women often say that they do not understand men, and men don't
understand women. They try to understand deeper, rather then remaining at the surface of the
problem. The emotional differences of men and women vary in temperaments of emotion which
indicates a disconnection in communication, moral motivation, stereotypes, and chemical reactions
in the brain. Men's and women's emotional outlooks are viewed by stereotypes. Men are usually the
more aggressive sex, and women are usually the more passive sex. Men are seen as the more sexual
gender, and that they solely want sex. Our

Process Analysis and Comparison and Contrast Paper: Belgium and United States
Because I'm a foreign student from Belgium, I thought it would be interesting to compare and
contrast Belgium to the United States. When you first see and start thinking about the title "Compare
and Contrast Belgium and the United States
", you will probably think that they are just two
randomly chosen countries who are pretty much equal too each other. You are absolutely wrong, if
this was your first thought. If you take a closer look to both countries, you will see some huge
differences between them. Belgium, a really small country, is located in northwestern Europe. The
neighboring countries are the Netherlands to the North, Germany to the East, Luxembourg

According the article from CNN 'Delta State shooting: Police seek suspect after history professor

September 14. (Cnn, 2015) How messed up is this? Students and professors are not even safe in a
school or University. Public places like schools and universities, should be a place where everyone
is safe.
Another similar example happened on December 15 2012. According to the article from BBC
'Connecticut school shooting: Children among 27 killed', a gunman has killed 20 children and also
six adults at a primary school in the US state of Connecticut.
"The United States has the highest rates of firearm
–related deaths (including homicide, suicide, and
unintentional deaths) among high–income countries. For youth 15 to 24 years of age, fire– arm
homicide rates, as documented by Richardson and Hemenway, were 35.7 times higher than in other
countries. For children 5 to 14 years of age, firearm suicide rates were 8 times higher, and death
rates from un– intentional firearm injuries were 10 times higher in the United States than other
high–income countries." (American academy of pediatrics,

Compare & Contrast Fiction Essay
Compare & Contrast: The Rocking–Horse Winner/The Lottery
ENGL 102_B40: Literature and Composition
Spring 2011
Michaela Gates L23562144
APA
Gambling, whether for life or money, is risky and success is not guaranteed, even if you 'win'. Two
different tales both involving risk.
1. Gambling for something valuable – One for life and the other for money
2. Characters' Personalities – Paul was hopeful and cared deeply for his family – Tessie while also
hopeful cared more about herself
3. Imagery – Paul: fortunate and hopeful – Tessie: unfortunate and unpleasant
4. Summary: Paul is more successful

Tessie's personality is somewhat similar to Paul's but they also have their differences. Paul is very
hopeful about winning the money his family needs, he has an incredible love for his mother. He is

that leads him to make money for his mother and save their house from haunting them. Tessie is also
hopeful, hopeful that she will not 'win' the lottery
. Of course, we find as we read that this doesn't
happen. Tessie does 'win' the lottery and she seems to be the only one that is saddened by this fact.
Little Paul is a very hopeful, fortunate boy. He so vividly pictures the horse races to come while
riding his rocking–horse, it's as if he's in the race himself and the rocking–horse is the winning
horse. In "The Rocking–Horse Winner", Lawrence really paints a imaginative picture with
descriptions such as with Paul's "big blue eyes that had an uncanny cold fire in them", and in "The
Lottery" Jackson paints a picture with words such as The town's children are collecting rocks like
young children regularly do. The men are "speaking of rain, planting, tractors and taxes." The
women are making small talk with one another. It seems like a regular day in a regular town." So, in
both stories the setting is different and the people are different but they have a similarity in the fact
that they are all gambling for something, whether good or bad. In reading these

1. The two types of organization that may be used in a compare/contrast essay would be either block
or point–by–point. With block, the first set of paragraphs covers one item completely and then the
other set of paragraphs covers the other item completely. In point–by–point, each point is addressed
in a separate paragraph, alternating between both subjects.
2. One thing I learned from reading this overview was the different types of methods there are when
comparing and contrasting two subjects. I didn't know there were specific ways to organize just in
general. As well as how point by point has a stronger effect on readers.

Comparison And Contrast In Research Paper
Comparison and contrast is when you compare two alternatives in order to decide which one is
better by finding the differences or similarities between them. In comparison you will find the
differences between two or more things, and in contrast you will find the similarities.
Depending on what type of paper you are writing
, many times the subject will be chosen for you.
However, in other situations you have to choose your own; when choosing the subjects keep in mind
that they need to have obvious differences or similarities.
A comparison and contrast essay can be structured in three ways: subject–by–subject, that is good
for short essays; separating the subjects in different paragraphs, for example: write the subject A in
one or two paragraphs and subject B in the next paragraphs.

Subject A point 2, subject B, point 2 and so on. This type is good for long essays and also make it
easier for the reader to follow.
And the third way is the mixed sequence that includes both ways, subject–by–subject and point–by–
point, is good for a diversity on your paper.
When writing a comparison you will be constructing an analogy, which means using an unusual
subject related to something more usual to better help the reader understand the subject. There is two
common forms in analogy: metaphor, which is a figure of speech where one thing is compared to an
object or action but no literally, is just a way so the reader can better comprehend, and simile that
differs from metaphor because of the use of the words ''like'' or ''as'' when comparing, for example:
my internet today is slow like a snail.
Neat People vs. Sloppy

Compare And Contrast Fish Cheeks And Caged Bird
Compare and Contrast: "Fish Cheeks" and "Caged Bird"
Rachael Becker
Assignment 5
Nicole Yurchak
1/30/2014
The differences between a narrative and a descriptive essay determine the way in which the reader
receives the story. The purpose of each is still very clear, to connect to the reader using story telling.
In order for the reader to receive the story as intended, the author must create a clear picture of;
events, settings, and purpose. In both pieces that I read, "Fish Cheeks" and "Caged Bird", both
writers were able to do this– each in their own way.
The first difference between Fish Cheeks and Caged Birds is the format of the literature. Amy

In Fish Cheeks, there was well over 4 different quotations(Tan, 2013). These quotations were also
from different sources– her mother and father. This is one of the factors that contributed to a good
sense of understanding at the end of the reading. Taking stories from real life events in my opinion is
more relatable.
After reading both literary works, it is evident that Fish Cheeks was a better written piece. I feel that
it would be able to relate to almost anyone. The ways that Amy Tan described the event and later on
gave insight to her significant life revelation, was very touching. It is not an easy task to write about
something, and be able to have others relate to you. I think that she chose a very relevant topic to
our current day in age. The topics of bullying and peer pressure are very relevant to previous
decades as well as this day in age. She was able to find something relative as well as relatable,
which is why I would consider this a superior essay. Our society should learn a thing or two, from
her experiences and what she has to share.

Comparison-Contrast Writing
1. Comparison–contrast writing holds two or more things, phenomena, or concepts side by side–
with comparison focusing on similarities, and contrast focusing on differences. By looking at
subjects side–by–side, we more clearly see their unique and shared traits.
2. Writers commonly compare and contrast subjects in order to explain how, why, and to what effect
their distinguishing features make the subjects similar or different. The writer believes that his or her
comparative analysis of the topic will enrich readers' understanding of that topic. Writers address a
wide range of topics through comparison–contrast: people, events, phenomena, technologies,
problems, products, stories, and so on.
3. Comparable items are types of same thing. The subjects are of the same order – one cannot
simply be an example of the other. Once writers choose the criteria, those criteria must be applied
consistently. For help comparing and contrasting subjects, use a Venn Diagram. List the subjects'
differences on the left or right and their similarities in the center.

This type of writing assignment is common. On a standardized test, you may be asked to analyze
literature, evaluate ideas, or make a judgment and explain your reasons.
In responding to these types of prompts, you often will compare and contrast characters, concepts,

There are ways to organize your thoughts about compare–and–contrast topics, which will help you

COMPARISON AND CONTRAST ESSAY
Comparison and Contrast Essay
Definition: In this kind of essay, the aim is to show the similarities and differences of two items, two
people, two countries, or how something or someone has changed. When comparing two things, we
focus more on the similarities though we may mention the differences shortly. When contrasting two
things, we point out the differences between them. The most important point to consider while
planning a comparison and contrast essay is choosing comparable items. e.g. Middle East Technical

to be compared. After writing the comparable points as a list, location, size, reputation, ...show more

Comparison and Contrast
In the name Allah""

❖
Definition: To compare is to show how items are alike. To contrast is to show how items are
different. Thus comparison and contrast involve pointing out the similarities or differences between
two (or more) items.
In deciding what to compare or contrast, you will want to make sure that the items share points in
common. Thus, the items compared are usually the same kind or class of thing, and in comparing
and contrasting them, you essentially establish two or more categories, showing the differences or
similarities between or among them. For example, you can compare two passenger cars–a Ford and
a Cadillac–

But your readers will probably want to know what the similarity or difference amounts to. You can
write this for a thesis. However, once you 've noted the difference, the readers will see that you 've
merely stated the obvious. Thus comparison and contrast for its own sake is generally pointless, but
both are extremely useful to develop support for a thesis. To support the thesis statement we should
outline central paragraphs.
❖
Central paragraph organization:
When you have decided whether to concentrate on comparison or contrast, you still must decide
how to do it. You should organize your comparison or contrast by whichever method suits your
material best. There are three different methods of organization of central paragraph: 1) Point–by–
point or alternating method 2) Block method 3) Mixed method
1) Point–by–point or alternating method: In this method you explain one characteristic of item A and
then immediately compare it with that of item B –and then you go on to compare the two items

Shakespeare Sonnet Compare and Contrast Essay
Sonnet Compare and Contrast Essay
Love can be expressed and described in many different ways. Shakespeare`s sonnets "116" and "18"
justify that love has the ability to create extremely powerful feelings between two people, which can
help them achieve the ultimate sense of happiness. To that end, when people experience true love
they live a more joyful and content life.
When a person finds love their lives are filled with joy and pleasure that bring true happiness into
ones life. In sonnet "116", Shakespeare writes that love should be; "an ever fixed mark, / That looks
on tempests and is never shaken," (lines 4–5). Shakespeare is speaking of a building that could
never be destroyed. This quote carries a metaphor within it, by

By using an association with something tangible like the warmth and beauty of summer,
Shakespeare is able to validate the couples enthusiasm and intensity of feelings for each other. As
shown in sonnet "116" metaphors are also used to show love, Lines 4–5 provide an even deeper and
more significant meaning for this sonnet. The metaphor makes love seem like an unbreakable
structure, one that is built on trust, admiration, and no doubt of wavering feelings. Lines 4–5 contain
examples of diction such as, "never," "shaken," and "tempest". Diction is used in this quote to create
a deeper meaning and emphasize on how firm the structure should be. The word "never" gives a
sense of confidence that nothing will ever be destroyed and the love will always be the same. Love
creates enthusiasm within a person, causing them feel a deep compassion for another, but love also
makes a person stronger by guiding them through problematic moments
Love should be able to guide people through hard times and support them when they need it most.
The quote in line 2–5 of Sonnet "116" is very metaphorical because the quote implies that love
should be strong and will never let a person down no matter how hard the situation is. As
Shakespeare said, "Love is not love, Which alters when it alteration finds, Or bends with the
remover to remove," he refers to love as being something tangible, as a solid unbreakable object. By
