Essay about Arguing Against Standardized Testing To many students standardized testing has become another part of schooling that is dreaded. Standardized testing has been a part of school since the nineteen–thirties; in those days it was used as a way to measure students that had special needs. Since the time that standardized test have been in American schools there has been many programs that have placed an importance on the idea of standardized testing such as the No Child Left Behind Act of 2001 (Evans 1). Over the years the importance of standardized testing has increased tremendously and so has the stakes, not only for teachers but also students. All states in the United States of America have state test in order to measure how much students learn, and help tell how well the ...show more content... Most standardized test do not measure emotional or mechanical intelligence, actually a lot of educators argue that standardized test do not measure comprehension or actual intelligence but rather memorization. While others may believe that standardized testing just needs a few improvements, others believe that it is impossible to have a test that measures accurately the capability of a diverse student population. Today's schooling depends heavily on the test scores from standardized test. Standardized testing should not have so much weight put on them because they have a negative impact on effective education , students' self–concept, and learning styles. Although standardized testing has been a major part of schooling it has also had a negative impact on effective education. Standardized has made a huge impact on public schooling so much that not only does it affect the students but also the teachers. With the teachers now beginning to get raises or having their jobs on the line if their students fail the test, many students have not been getting the fullest education process that they could get. Students may not realize the impact that it has had on the type of teaching style that they receive because they are so used to it. With so many teachers not having a lot of time to teach what is on the test and the other things that they feel are important to students to know, a lot of Get more content on StudyHub.Vip
Academic Dishonesty Essay In the past decade, professors across the country have noticed an alarming new trend–academic dishonesty is on the rise. More than half of college students surveyed admit to at least one instance of serious cheating in the past year (McCabe and Pavela). Information is incredibly easy to access on the Internet, and devices such as iPhones put that power, literally, into the palms of students' hands. Many students entering universities today face extraordinary amounts of pressure for results academically, leading them to believe that cheating is necessary to succeed. This mentality is further cemented by examples in mass media, from professional athletes to CEOs cheating in order to get ahead. To battle this trend, colleges across the ...show more content... According to Charles A. Perkins, Ph.D. and Anne A. Skleder, Ph.D, "most systems presume that the great majority are honorable and honest and that the Code is in place to punish violators. This approach is faulty because it is based upon the (false) presumption that the rules are understood and built on a foundation well established prior to arriving at college." Students come to college with bad habits developed in high school regarding their completing their schoolwork honestly. Also, many already feel that cheating can be justified on a case–by–case basis, so honor codes do not actually dissuade them from doing it. Also, I do not feel that it is the place of colleges to impose moral standards on their students. For example, the students at Brigham Young University face regulations on every part of their lives, from their academic work, to their personal appearance, to their sexual expression. According to Stanley Fish in his work Save the World On Your Own Time, this type of education is not the university's job, "the practices of responsible citizenship and moral behavior should be encouraged in our young adults, but it's not the business of the university to do so" (Fish 67). If honor codes tread into this territory, it serves the exact opposite of its intended purpose. Honor codes made to protect the integrity of the university will actually undermine it when they try to teach morality. Fish calls professors who try to cultivate Get more content on StudyHub.Vip

The Importance Of Academics Academics 3.1 Importance of Academics Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world. It is the passport to the future, for tomorrow belongs to those who prepare for it. Academics are important because it is strongly linked to the positive outcomes we value. Argumentative Essay : My Writing Experience This spring semester while enrolled in Professor Hazleton course I was able to have a much better writing experience than the one I had in the fall semester. During the fall semester I struggled deeply with essays, making no higher than a C at times. I was a new incoming freshmen with no experience in college once at all and by coming from a school that never really required me to write any type of essays I was sure to have a rough start. Yet, this semester was different I felt more confident while writing my papers. Argumentative type essays are actually pretty fun to write because you are able to pick the topic of your choice and that really helps one feel like he actually knows what he is talking about. I have written 4 argumentative type essays throughout the course and have noticed my writing still needs work. Although I still have a long while to go I have developed a few strengthens during the course. I am now good at working with syllogism in order to make a good enthymeme thesis and now have good skills in providing evidence, but even though I have made process I still need work in areas like avoid first person and backing up my claims all the way through. Although, I have more weaknesses than strengths my effectiveness towards using a syllogism to create an enthymeme thesis has really came a long way for me. It came in handy in my "More Than Just One Language" paper where my professor made a comment stating that I had a very good thesis in substance. To develop Get more content on StudyHub.Vip
Argumentative Essay On Psychedelic Drugs LSD, Psilocybin, DMT, MDMA, Ketamine and Adrenochrome... what do they all have in common? They are all psychedelic drugs. Psychedelic drugs are drugs that cause hallucinations and apparent expansion of consciousness. There are many unanswered questions about the drug, what exactly is a psychedelic and what defines it also, what is the purpose of a psychedelic drug ? Psychedelics are usually thought of as one of the most profound times in your life or one of the worst decisions you have ever made, but either way it is a life changing experience. Another aspect of psychedelic drugs is the myths and misconceptions about the different types, some are exponentially more dangerous than the others and in the end each drug has a different effect on whomever ...show more content... That is usually never the case, unless you are the 1% that it does happen to and that is an idea you should have considered before you blindly took the drug. But most importantly psychedelics usually do not trigger mental disorders. Just because you took mescaline once in high school does not mean that you randomly developed schizophrenia. Another extremely popular misconception is that you will "re–trip" or have flashbacks that make you feel like you are tripping years after you took the drug. That is completely false, people believe that psychedelics, mainly LSD is stored in your spinal fluid and can leak over time, but that is also untrue. Even though a few ideas about psychedelics are not real does not mean that the drug is safe and a walk in the park. If you want to experiment you should research the subject for yourself and see if it is right for you, don't just take it because your friends think it cool, educate Get more content on StudyHub.Vip

Mental Health In College Students Essay Mental health is a serious topic that is often not taken seriously. Due to my own struggles with depression, I have experienced the impact mental illness can have on a student's life. Mental illness can make everyday life feel unbearable and can have just as serious of an effect on a person as a physical illness. The causes of increasing mental health problems in college students are numerous, and it will take work from both students and universities to overcome this problem, but change is necessary for the health of U.S. college students. There is no simple answer to what causes mental health problems in college students, as factors differ for every person. There are, however, some factors that are more possible than others such as preexisting conditions. According to "Mental Health By The ...show more content... Awareness. Many people are unaware of the symptoms of mental illness and therefore are not able to spot them in themselves or others. Unfortunately, there is a problem when it comes to educating people on mental health. People don't want to talk about mental health problems. They are afraid of mental illness and therefore avoid the topic. There is also a stigma in society that those with mental illness are in control of their disabilities so they are told to "change their thinking" rather than to seek medical help. This stigma and ignorance of mental illness symptoms often means that people struggling with mental health problems do not get help until they are at a point of crisis. Students and colleges need to work to break the stigma and spread awareness so that those struggling with mental health problems can get help as soon as they feel their mental health declining and it does not have to get to a point where they feel they cannot handle life. Most colleges have student health services which offer counseling and other help for struggling students but, those students either do not know these services exist or they are too embarrassed to take advantage of Get more content on StudyHub.Vip

Argument Essay Example University As higher education is becoming more and more expensive for students to attend college, it is making it harder for students of different backgrounds, especially low–income and middle–income families, to hold a degree beyond a high school level. Many colleges are not taking the initiative to take care of these students and are preventing these individuals from growing and climbing the socioeconomic ladder. Thus, it is imperative for a university to create opportunities for students of all backgrounds to have a chance of gaining a college degree because there are many benefits to furthering their education . My Definition of Success Essay example "Try not to become a man of success, but rather try to become a man of value." – Albert Einstein –– My personal definition would not include "stuff" at all. No one will care (and neither will you) what kind of car your drove or how big your house was when you're on your deathbed. Your thoughts will not be about your job, the office or how much money you made. Personal success is defined by how content and enjoyable your life is. That is not to say that challenges and disappointments aren't included in this. A rich, eventful and challenging life doing what you enjoy and positively affecting others seems to me to be just about right. Find a job you love and you'll never work another day in your life. I know I won't. In my ...show more content... Past, present and future are all important to keep in perspective. Looking back and not having regrets is extremely satisfying. Your current situation and your contentment with it are also very important, and having goals and milestones to work toward in the future keeps you motivated and keeps life interesting and challenging. In this age in which we live, success is generally measured by the amount of money you earn, or the amount of wealth or power or number of promotions you've accumulated. I find that the older I grow, the more I view the people who are most happy and content with their lives as the most successful. Rich, poor or in between, they've tended to treat life as a journey, not a final destination. They took that trip when they were 25 even though they really couldn't afford it, they ordered the $55 bottle of wine with their filet because they knew that even though it was expensive it would enhance the meal so much more than water would. They took a chance on a start–up company, moved to Europe or Asia and experienced things that most people only dream about. If they managed to grow wealthy from the experience, so much the better. As long as moderation with most things is practiced, things won't spin out of control. Bottom line rules for a successful life: Always try new things. Listen twice as much as you talk. Travel as much as you can comfortably afford. Faith and family always come first – Get more content on StudyHub.Vip

For this discussion, my audience needs to know there are options for financial aid available or should be available for both traditional and nontraditional students. This set of critical readers definitely value reliable, solid content with reputable sources over the author's opinion concerning grant reform. The most important aspect to my audience would be the decisions on what to include in the final draft for this classical argument. Argumentative Essay On Academic Competition Competition. This word varies in connotation. To some, it symbolizes joy, triumph, and self– satisfaction, while for others the word represents worthlessness and failure. Since an early age, kids are taught about competition through games and sports. Kids develop skills like sportsmanship, integrity and fair play. Competition is like water in a sieve. To argue that competition does not exist is like saying that water is not leaking from a sieve when only one hole is clogged. Competition is everywhere. In today's society, there has been a lot of controversy over academic competition in school. Many see academic competition has a looming rain cloud that hangs over the students who excel differently, and cannot find success in the standard school system. They see competition as emphasis on arbitrary performance. Yet, competition is not all that bad. Competition is what helps us learn and grow as people. If students did not know the difference between a win or lose, then how would they know where to improve? Academic competition gets a negative connotation , but in reality, it has an overall positive impact. In a recent article, it was discussed how students are experiencing an overwhelming amount of stress from competition. Students, tired and sleep deprived, dread school not because of the workload, but because of the academic competition. Argumentative Essay On College Education The path to success has been remodeled over the years by different generations due to the developing mind. College does educate and challenges people to do more and think more. We can clearly see this example because the developers of this debate are both college graduates. Later on in life more and more questions will be asked and answered. College has an importance that is so popular but that importance has a value. The developing world and society will always view college as something necessary no matter what because is has proved to be a path and a escape to a better life. People that have specific circumstances and cannot pursue college have often been denied of a huge opportunity that can be life changing to almost everyone. No one can judge intelligence based on economical stability or tests, but what the educational system seems to be judging intelligence on is the bank account of the projected student. There is a saying that says "If you think education is expensive, try ignorance." But as technology is constantly advancing and computers are running almost anything, is a college education really necessary? There are people whom have never set foot in a college and are doing better than people who have their master's degree. There are views from both sides that contain a valid argument. A college education helps people and prepares them for the entry into the real world. Students learn what exactly personal freedom is and then they learn how to enjoy freedom in the Get more content on StudyHub.Vip

Persuasive Essay On STEM Education Everyone wants what is best for their children, right? If that is true, then schools need to start preparing their students for the challenges they will meet in college and the skills to overcome them. This is best done through the presence of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) in middle and high schools. Through Wisconsin schools furthering their focus on STEM with extracurriculars, students will gain vital skills that are necessary for human progression, problem– solving and time management skills that can be used in real life, and the students learn how they can apply what is being taught in the classroom to real obstacles and challenges. It is clear that STEM is a rapidly growing and advancing field that is needed for our human progression. There are so many different professions that fall under STEM education and many of them impact the world every day. According to former President Barack Obama "[Science] is more than a school subject, or the periodic table, or the properties of waves. It is an approach to the world, a critical way to understand and explore and engage with the world, and then have the capacity to change that world" (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math). Here, former President Obama is talking about how important science is as more than just a school subject; science can be taken out of school and used to impact many people and change the world. Some may say that there have been other fields in history that became very popular but Get more content on StudyHub.Vip

Argumentative Essay On Online Education Online education is a form of education which is administered and developed through the internet. The transition from Classroom education to online education has been accepted widely by many countries. It is one of the upcoming trends in education sectors all around the World. With improved technologies, it has become easier to learn. As to every topic, there co–exist both supporting and denying arguments in this regard. Online education can be possible anywhere with a mobile, Laptop, Desktop or tab. Just having a stable internet could get you anywhere like getting lectured by a professor from Stanford or MIT. Online education is possible nowadays even for free through websites like Edx, Coursera etc., Online education is like an ocean, no matter how much we learn there will be more. Access is one of the happening things from Online education. The opportunity cost of Online education is very high. The time we spend travelling through these busy roads is cut down entirely. The cost we bear on books, travelling, uniforms, etc., is cut down drastically. Flexible schedules are possible. Online learning creates the ability to study whenever and wherever. Also, it creates flexibility to study around family obligations. Money, Time and Values are important for any living being. While we see that trends are changing, people tend to claim moral values are deteriorating. In some way, most of us want to form loving families, raise our children to be good citizens, stand up for the downtrodden and protect our communities from harm. We still form friendships, business partnerships based on old–fashioned criteria. When our trust is abused or we are unfairly treated, we see that as a major violation of our relationship and we judge the wrongdoer accordingly. Though online education does not provide a mentor like the classroom–based education does, people still inculcate values through the beautiful curriculum and courses such as right life, Happiness, positive living etc., Online education has proved to be one of the greatest boons in today's world. But unfortunately, India is still lacking to accept distance education / Online education as equivalent to classroom education. Academic Dismissal Sample I am writing to appeal my academic dismissal from Lloyd L. Gregory School of Pharmacy, Palm Beach Atlantic University. I was very surprised and distressed to receive an email from the dean of academics Dr. Dana Brown on Tuesday (12/13/2016) this week informing me of my dismissal which was based on the about the Student Success Committee's decision. Grit Essay Examples Grit is a predictor of academic, professional, and personal success. Grit can be defined as strength of character or the ability to overcome failure and continue to work toward success. People with grit are not always the people with the most natural ability, but their work ethic and ability to overcome obstacles allows them to achieve success. Grit is a very valuable characteristic in almost any venture, as it gives someone an advantage in overcoming the inevitable obstacles they will face. However, grit is much easier adopted when an individual has a growth mindset. The first step to obtaining grit is to correlate both self–control and self–confidence when trying to reach an objective. By doing this, one can focus on the task at hand ...show more content... I had no experience as a runner nor did I have the form. This did not phase me however. That year I promised myself to push through all the six mile runs, sore legs, gnarly blisters, and at times, lack of oxygen. At every meet and speed workout practice I pushed myself further and further. I set a goal every time I kicked off from the starting line and never let myself get discouraged when I failed. By my senior year, I was the fourth fastest runner on varsity. That year our varsity team won the district meet, which qualified us to run in the 2016 state meet in Oregon. The transformation over the years were evident. My determination to accomplish my goal of becoming a faster runner was complete. If I had simply just given up that first day of practice, I wouldn't have ran along side of the fastest runners in Oregon or have met the multitude of people that are now my closest friends. Having a goal sets one up for a challenge, whether it being physically or mentally, goals keep us active and thinking in more ways than one. Still, if someone has self–control, confidence, and a goal, they are still not complete. Growth mindset is the cone to an ice cream. It is the foundation of what I think a successful person is. Without it one couldn't use the characteristics mentioned above in more ways than one. Someone with a growth mindset believe that their most basic abilities can be developed through dedication and hard work, brains and talent are just the starting point. Example Of An Argument ii) What is an argument? Elaborate with examples. In everyday life, people use argument to connote a squabble between people. But in critical thinking and logic, an argument is a list of statements, which consist of two or more premises or assumptions and a conclusion of the argument. To accord an argument is to provide a set of premises as reasons for giving credence to the conclusion and not necessarily to attack or criticise someone. Arguments can also be a tool to underpin other people's opinions. Here is an example of an argument : If you want to find a good job, you should study smart You do want a good job So, you should study smart. The first two sentences are the premises of the argument and the final sentence is the conclusion. To ...show more content... Therefore, the patient does not have malaria. Referring back to the criteria that has to be fulfilling to produce a valid argument, the given example obeys the criteria with a true premise which leads to a true conclusion. This is how a valid argument is identified. For valid arguments, the addition of extra premises will not change the conclusion. A valid conclusion is deduced from a set of premises can never be changed by the addition of new premises. b) Invalid arguments If an argument is invalid, then it is possible for a false conclusion even though all the premises are true. It is logically possible for the premises to be true and the conclusion false. Here is an example of an invalid argument: All actors are robots Johny Dep is a robot. Therefore, Johny Dep is an actor. Now, if these premises are true, it does not follow that Johny Dep is an actor. It would follow if we mention that only actors are robots in the premises, but it does not say that. We can assume that
