Essay on The Importance of Reading
Reading has at all times and in all ages been a source of knowledge, of happiness, of pleasure and even moral courage.
In today's world with so much more to know and to learn and also the need for a conscious effort to conquer the
divisive forces, the importance of reading has increased. In the olden days if reading was not cultivated or encouraged,
there was a substitute for it in the religious sermon and in the oral tradition. The practice of telling stories at bed time
compensated to some extent for the lack of reading
. In the nineteenth century Victorian households used to get
together for an hour or so in the evenings and listen to books being read aloud. But today we not only read, we also
want to read more and more and catch up

There is then the serious reading undertaken for research and for satisfying one's longing for knowledge. It may be a
subject of scientific significance, or a subject of historic or philosophic importance – varying according to the taste of
the person. This kind of reading disciplines the mind and trains one for critical and original thinking. There is yet
another kind of reading –reading for pleasure. Though serious reading is also a source of pleasure, reading which is
devoted mainly to it differs in one respect. It grows upon one, it gives before demanding and it soothes and relieves
tension and loneliness. The only kind of reading which neither stimulates thought nor provides knowledge is one
which is approached negatively, with the simple motive of escape and of "killing" time.
A person who is widely read is able to mix with others: he is a better conversationalist than those who do not read. He
can stand his ground. Reading broadens the vision. it is in a way a substitute for travel. It is not possible to travel as
much as one would like to and reading can fill in the gap created by the lack of travel. "Reading", as Bacon wrote in
his essay. 'Of Studies'. "maketh a full man: conference a ready man: and writing an exact man". Thus a widely–read
man is a better conversationalist and is able to see the other point of view.

Essay on English Language Learner
Schools in the United States of America (USA) are facing many challenges, because of the increasing numbers of the
English Language Learner (ELL) students. School administrators are trying hard to provide an equal opportunity
education to their students. Furthermore, educators are looking forward in providing several methods and technique to
help their students to succeed in their academic learning skills. There are many factors that need to focus on and it can
be the fundamental when trying to build powerful resolutions, such as parents and community resources, social
influences, native language, etc.

By allowing the ELL students to use their native and their second language in reading, and writing it will make them
move along this new process. Reading and writing experience should be context related and meaningful in order for
them to be effective in their learning, even though, they can transfer the literacy skills that they have obtained in their
native language towards their second language while they are exposed to more learning experiences.
Many challenges are faced by the ELL students and their families by being in a new environment, such as a new
language, school
, food, beliefs, life style, etc., where they feel that they need to deviate from their home language and
their culture, absolutely not, they need to be conceited, revered, treasured. In this matter, our role as educators is to be
prepared to work effectively with families (Katz & Bauch, n.d., p. 189), in providing the effective support, and
assistant with the full understanding of the new changes in their new environments. On the other hand, social cultural
pressure could be increased if students do not have another native individual to relate to; students need to have a
teacher who will assist and guide them in learning new a language; without allowing them to lose their cultural
identity.

knowledge about their students' community experiences, and curricula

Advanced English Reading Essay
What difference has Advanced English Reading course made to my learning ––A Summary Report of Advanced

After the end of Advanced English Reading course I have to take the question into consideration that what I have

Those gains come to my learning inch by inch.
I have to illustrate the reason that I discusses the gain of writing skills not reading skills even though them are similar

Reading can expand the human mind and open the doors of creativity. Reading allows people to go into another
dimension, but that is starting to fade, according to Brian Sztabnik in the article, Igniting a passion for Reading. He is
a retired English teacher who discussed his teaching techniques. He spoke about the repetitive teaching methods he
used while reading a book. "I have taught English on the secondary level for the past 12 years, and for many of those
years I taught books only one way: I would hand out a set of novels, and study guides to go along with them"(Igniting
a Passion for Reading). He claimed that his methods did not help his students gain a passion for reading, for they only
retained the knowledge until it was no longer needed.

I remember I would have competitions with myself to see how fast I could read a book. Slowly, as I got older I
stopped reading and I could never figure out the reason why that was. I knew I still had a passion for reading, but I
knew I could not find the time. The educational system does not provide choices, but repetitiveness. I could count on
my hand the books that I truly enjoyed reading in school
. I truly do love reading, so I will read anything put in front of
me, but I can not speak on the behalf of others. I constantly hear students proclaim their hatred for reading, while in
reality it is not reading in general, but what they are being forced to read. Reading books for school, is not what I
consider reading. All students, in my opinion should have some type of passion for reading, no matter their level.
Everyday I watch society and school slowly deteriorate our generations love of reading. I do not remember the last
time I picked up and read a book, not because I don't want to, but because I can't. I can't because I am too busy reading
and writing essays on a book I only read because I had no other choice. Readings such a magnificent thing, that is
being pushed to the wayside and being forced on students by the educational system and its methods. The educational
system could implement a passion for reading, by changing the criteria and letting us, the students

Big6 Information Literacy
Executive summary:
Information Literacy (IL) is a strategic look at the future of education focusing on the evolution of the virtual learning
environment. With the implementation of Information Literacy Models such as the Big6 model in which these skills
can be transferrable to any educational stage or workplace as well as the Information Search Process (ISP) where
teachers and students who are exposed to inquiry based learning are doing so in a holistic approach to research
gathering, not merely the collection of information. IL and ISP is designed for educators to provide foundational
scaffolding for students to access in their quest for efficient and effective research in order to reduce student stress and
anxiety when completing assessments/assignments.

Motivating Students To Read
The motivation to read comes from a variety of factors. This article from a popular website for educators and parents,
Reading Rockets, identified five main ones. First, students that have a positive self–concept and value reading will be
more successful than those that do not (Gambrell, Palmer, Coddling, & Mazzoni, 1996). Second, a widely used and
effective tool for motivation is providing students with choices and when this occurs, students are more likely to
engage in reading (Worthy & McKool, 1996). Third, teachers can model reading strategies during read–alouds and
discussions which will then help motivate students to read (McGee & Richgels, 2003). Fourth, teachers must have a
wide–selection of books for students to read during independent

Learning To Read Essay
Learning to read is a process, Understanding how a group of words work well with one another to combine a sentence,
paragraph or even a novel. Reading to learn is taking in information that has been given and being able to apply to life
situations. Many still argue today about the difference between learning to read and reading to learn. Throughout
elementary, I was given the opportunity to attend an amazing public school that was held to standards as a private
school. I learned skills that many kindergarteners did not learn until the first grade. Being able to read full chapter
books in a two–day period was only one of the many perks that I was given. After my family and I changed locations,
I had to attend a different school. Once the teachers realized how well I could read out loud, spell words, and
understand the text, I then realized how much I love to read. Many of us enjoy reading many books just for
entertainment or just to learn new things that we did not

Reading to learn can only help us. Reading does not have to always be about knowledge, it could be for pure
entertainment. Reading affects the brain in a good way that helps with communication, understanding, and learning.
Many adults still read to learn and expand their knowledge on many ways of life and as well as many other life events.
As I continue my journey of life, I have a positive view on my own literacy because I have taken the time to invest
into my knowledge and learn about the things that I do not know already. Every day I try to learn something new that I
did not know the day before. While I am still in school working towards my degree, I still make time to read out side
of the of my assigned work to pick up a book or something that is informational to broaden the things that I know. The

Reflective Essay About Reading
Reading is important in all aspects of learning. It widens vocabulary, improves imagination, and is how we discover
new things. More than anything, reading develops the mind. It is important to begin reading with children at a very
young age, to introduce new concepts and words creating a strong basis for the future. Most small children love being
read to; they find picture books fun and enjoyable because of the animated pictures and presentation of the words.
After each time they read a book, they remember the fun pictures or words, looking forward to the next book. If a
good memory of reading is planted in a child, as they grow older not only will reading come more naturally, it will
bring more pleasure. I believe the key to successfully getting a student to read is to make it as enjoyable as possible. In
reading this article, I was able to relate on a few different levels. I could put myself in the teacher's shoes on some
levels, but even more so with the students. In Middle School, one of our reading assignments were reading cards, for
which our teacher would pick a new genre each month and we had to read chapter books according to the genre.
Reading cards were a tool the students would use to summarize their readings each time they read. The reading cards
consisted of a chapter book the teacher chose, each month a different genre. After each section we read, a short
summary was to be written and we had to write down and look up any words we didn't know. This was

Teaching Students How to Read Essay
Teaching Students how to read
Learning to read is an on going process. Aesthetic and Efferent reading are the two types of reading a student can do.
Aesthetic reading is when people read for their own enjoyment and to make their own visuals and interpretations in
their head. Efferent reading is when students read for a specific purpose, for example finding the answer to a test in
their textbook. With both types of reading, there are many steps a student has to be made aware of as they are learning
.
There are five increments of reading before a student becomes fluent. They have to go through the process of pre
reading, reading, responding, exploring, and applying. As the reading process is being taught, it is essential to

If demonstrated properly, this will give the student a better understanding of punctuation and emotion to move them to
the next step of reading. Students have to give feedback on what they have read to show that they have an
understanding. When they are giving feedback they are responding. Students can write how they feel in a journal
based on a question the teacher gives them. They can also tell the class their feelings on the book they read. Children
need to think about the book they have read. They need to think about the way the author wrote the book and the new
words they have learned in it. This is called exploring. After the students take time thinking about the text they need to
do an activity. This final stage is called applying.
Teachers need to go over important information as the students are learning the stages of reading. (Tompkins, 2009,
72–73)
One thing teachers have to add to a lesson plan as students are learning to read is phonics. " Phonics is a set of rules
that specify the relationship between letters in the spelling of words and sounds of spoken language
"( Learning Point
Associates, 2004,pg13). It can be used as children are learning to read to help them decode words. Phonics helps
determine what letters make a specific sound and why. As children are learning to read and write it is the teachers role
to model phonics. Phonics can be taught by a teacher focusing on a specific letter and having the

My Experience Of Reading
While I was in middle school in sixth grade I actually didn't know how to read books or any story my teachers would
give me. As I was reading through the passages they would give me, I noticed that while I read a story it wouldn't stick
to my head. I then told myself that it is going to be difficult to read passages since nothing would click in my head.
There were times where the teacher would have the students and I take mini quizzes and I would hardly understand on
what the reader was talking about. I would fail the quizzes due to the reason that I never gained much knowledge in
reading. Articles and stories would always be tough for me to read since I didn't have many experience in reading.
Therefore, half of sixth grade my teacher whom was named Ms. Soto which was an English teacher had really made
reading easier for me as the semester went by. I had told her I was having difficulties in reading and she gladly helped
me out. Every time I needed help with a problem from the story she was gladly there to help me. For example, the
many things she would help me out with was having to stay after school for about an hour reading poems, articles and
short passages from books she would give me. She also had me read magazine pages every three times a week to
better my understanding of what I'm reading. I then was told that it would be a good opportunity to come in on
Saturdays for reading to better my knowledge in what I'm reading. With all the help from my sixth–grade teacher

Best Ways To Study Essay
Three Best Ways to Study For many students studying for an exam or a test can be very stressful. For a lot of them
studying is very hard because sometimes most of the materials they study, they don't remember on the actual test or
exam. However there are more than one way to study and most theses studying methods can be very helpful and very
reliable. A Lot of students tend to cram all the studying two or the night before the test and according to UCLA
professor of psychiatry Andrew J. Fuligni (2012) cramming and trying to get as much information in your head two or
a night before the test is very counterproductive. How to study properly Although there are many ways and methods of
studying whether it be scientific or a family belief ,

A second method of studying is by studying in an appropriate setting (Chadron State College). Studying in an
environment where distraction is very easy to find is very difficult. Studying in a quiet setting with a lot of space away
from distraction can help you study and can help memory performance. With this setting it's also helpful to be
consistent with the studying, studying at the same time and same place is very effective especially when this is done 2
–3 weeks prior to the test quiz or exam. With the proper setting, proper setting is also necessary. " Your study desk or
table should be equipped with all the materials you might need to complete the assignment, e.g., pencils, pens, erasers,
paper clips, stapler, dictionary, snacks, and liquid refreshments, etc." – Chadron State College. Adding items that can
help you study and removing things that might distract is also need for effective studying. The third and final method
of studying that is effective is studying while listening to music. According to Goodwin (2015), studying with music
before a test can improve attention and can help lessen depression and anxiety. The "Mozart effect" is known to be
helpful but of course today the effects will be very different since students don't tend to listen to Mozart. The type of
music played also plays a pig role of studying. Studying with music that has lyrics is not recommended

America, a country created by the outcasts of Europe in the 1700's, is a nation that consists of a diversity not known by
any other country. Since the first settlers travelled to this new nation, people from all over the world have come to this
great country for many different reasons. Some people come to make a better life for their families, some people come
to experience freedom, some have come to stay alive and avoid genocide of their own nation, in the past some have
even been forced to come to America with their lives being changed forever. In schools today, we learn about the
reasons people come to this nation, but it's not often that we learn what happened after they arrived. Textbooks are

I was an outcast because I had come from another culture that these girls didn't quite understand. If they had been
taught about different cultures in their schools before college they would have been able to have a better understanding
of where I came from which would have helped them not to judge me so quickly. There are many ways a teacher can
incorporate multicultural literature into a classroom. One of the more popular forms of incorporating outside reading is
through book clubs or literature circles. In literature circles the teacher brings in about four or five copies of four or
five different books. Before beginning to read the books, the teacher will give a brief description of each book to the
class (Tompkins). It is usually best if the teacher has already read each book so they can give a better overview of the
book. After the students have had a chance to learn a little about each book they will then choose their book, as well as
other members for their group. Some teachers may make exceptions to the amount of choices the students have, but
the students should be given as much freedom as possible. Most times the books will each tell a story from the
perspective of someone from a different culture. The cultures represented may be the same cultures displayed in the
classroom or different cultures. All the books however, usually share a

2.1 Introduction
In this section the researcher reviews the literature from the past researches or opinions about the important of the
learning vocabulary and impacts of reading and short story in the scope of language learning and teaching and also the
relation between reading, short story and vocabulary learning. Theattention of this section especially is on reviewing
of the impacts of the reading story on English, especially, vocabulary learning of the EFL learners.
For the first part of this chapter, it's better to start with the definition of vocabulary.
2.2 The conceptual definition of vocabulary
What is vocabulary?
If we want to define the vocabulary, it is the knowledge of words & their meanings.
As Stahl (2005) states," vocabulary knowledge is knowledge; the knowledge of word not only implies a definition, but
also implies how that word fits into the world"." Vocabulary" can have at least three different meanings;
1. All of the words in a language
; new words are constantly being added to language.
2. The words used in a particular context
That is necessary to improve your business vocabulary if you are going to do MBA
3. The words which an individual person knows them
The teacher said that my vocabulary is good.
There is a difference between Active And Passive Vocabulary in our own individual vocabulary, the words which we
understand and use them are called our active vocabulary and the words which we understand but do not or cannot use
them are called our

Introduction
Over the course of this semester I have had the opportunity to learn what needs to happen in the process of teaching
reading and writing to a student. Coming into this position with a small amount of knowledge of teaching, I felt
somewhat unprepared. Over the course of my seven sessions with my student, I have implemented the theories I have
learned – through readings, in class practice and support from my own teachers and peers' – and brought them into my
sessions. From our first to our last session together I could see how my instructional methods worked to teach my
student certain lessons and methods of learning reading
, writing and comprehension strategies. Throughout this paper,
I will introduce you to the student I have been working with, expanding on her background as a learner, reader and
writer and show how she has progressed throughout our time together.
Student background
During these sessions, I have had the pleasure of working one–on–one with Claire, an eight–year–old in second grade
at a New York City private school. Claire comes from a very traditional family, her parents are married and live
together, they have two daughters, eight and 5 years–old, respectively, a son who is almost two–year–old and are now
expecting their fourth child!
Working with Claire has given me an understanding of how eight–year–olds undergo the learning process, in regards
to reading
, writing and comprehension. Since I have known Claire and her family for over a year now I have been able
to get to know her on a personal basis, but this overall experience allowed me to see what she is like on an academic
level, and through the lens of a teacher. Knowing Claire on a personal basis before our sessions started allowed me to
know who she really is on each level, allowing me as a teacher to create a bond with my student before starting the
teaching process (Routman, 2003).
Before our first session together, I had the chance to sit down with Claire's mother to learn about who she is as a
student. Claire's mother informed me that she is a student who loves school, and he teachers infer from her their
experiences that she loves to read and write in the classroom. Being informed about this, prior to my

Reaching My Students Through Real World Experiences
High school teachers face the challenge of preparing their students for the real world. Students need real world
preparation, not just acumen. Reaching my students involves building encouraging relationships and a sense of
security within the classroom. Sharing my personal experiences, as well as the testimonies of others, can be an
effective motivational tool for preparing college–bound students for the real world. My role as a teacher involves
communicating the many obstacles college students face. Providing students the psychological preparation they need
will alleviate fears and frustrations high school seniors often face while anxiously anticipating the vast college
experience

The real world exists far beyond the college level, as every day we are learning. John Spayde's article, Learning in the
Key of Life, emphasizes this lifetime learning process as connections to the real world. How will secondary education
prepare one for college, or more importantly, for life? Learning is constant, necessary for success beyond economic
factors. Success should not be measured by dollars, but to a peaceful state of mind. I have personally found that
wisdom does not equal knowledge. Wisdom propels the spirit, builds the character of a person, and enhances one's
view of life. Wisdom is attained through time and experience, not in the classroom. Spayde addresses a richness of life
within the knowledge of the humanities. He defines something he calls "slow knowledge," a knowledge "shaped and
calibrated to fit a particular ecological and cultural context." His aim of slow knowledge is "resilience, harmony, and
the preservation of long–standing patterns that give our lives aesthetic, spiritual, and social meaning" (61). I believe
this generation has not been exposed enough to learning through slow knowledge. Teachers must incorporate these
basic fundamentals in learning that enable students to acknowledge and appreciate the rewards of their endurance. The
greater rewards are

Literature for Use in Classroom Essay
Literature for Use in Classroom
Donna E. Norton's purpose in her book is "intended to help adults discover ways to share their enchantment with
books, our literary heritage, and an appreciation for literature that will last a lifetime" (v). Teachers share that same
goal. In selecting literature for a classroom, teachers need to take in account the following: the school's standards and
benchmarks, the adopted sequential curriculum, the age of the students, their stages of language, cognitive,
personality, and social development. Teachers need to have the literature curriculum set for the year, but flexible
enough to meet the needs of the students in the classroom.
Using the schools' standards is the first step in deciding how
