Persuasive Short Stories
As we are nearing our destination our bus driver yells out "I am going to stop at this gas station and
fill up." When our bus driver came back onto the bus he exclaimed "The gas station is out of
gasoline so we will stay here overnight." Then, everyone in the bus started grunting and moaning.
"But guys we can make this fun if we tell stories to pass the time, Here, I will start." I said. And we
began telling each other our stories. "Can we please adopt this one, Mom? Pretty please, he is so
cute! With his bright green eyes and his pink little nose," said Jacob, a thirteen year old boy with red
hair. "After this we will be pretty much bankrupt," said Jacob's mom, with her deep blue eyes staring
into Jacob's "Please just this one thats all," said Jacob "Ok but promise me that you will take
responsibility of him by taking care of him," said Jacob's mom. And they strutted to the individual
behind the counter. When they got back home with their new puppy they decided to name him Spot
due to a cinnamon–colored spot on his back. The next morning, when Jacob woke up he noticed that
Spot's nose is not the same shade of pink. In fact, it is quite pale. "Mom we need to take spot to the
vet now!" screamed Jacob wistfully. "Ok, I will get Spot while you get in the car," replied Mom.
When they got to their destination, Jacob sprinted out of the car and went to the vet's office and
almost immediately the vet said "Spot is going to need surgery, do you have insurance?" "No, how

Essay about Short Story
Short Story The sudden, severe storm caught me totally unaware. I was walking down Peppers Road
when the dark clouds started to build. I looked around as I huddled under a large, dead oak tree
which offered me little or no protection from the razor–sharp rain. Almost all of the houses on this
abandoned street were too badly damaged for me to take shelter in, except for one. The house
loomed impressive and morbid in the greenish–black sky. A flash of lightning briefly illuminated the
house and I saw that the windows were broken, but the structure seemed sound. I started to think
what I should do; my options were to either stay under this great dead oak tree risking getting hit by
lightning

There was a crash from upstairs. My heart began to race. Who was it? What was it? I could only
hear my heart as I listened for another sound. The silence throbbed in my ears; I stood at the bottom
of the staircase. The sounds had come from upstairs. My curiosity and swallowed my fears and
nervously ascended the battered and dilapidated stairs, not knowing what I was going to encounter.
On the second floor I found a bathroom furnished in an old murky green with scale on it, I left it
undisturbed as the floor looked unsafe. I found several bedrooms laden with cloth–covered antiques,
clothes that might have been beautiful at one time, and tarnished jewellery. The walls and floor
where all wooden, they were illuminated by the constant stream of lightning flashes that came
through the stained window that towered over me. At the end of the second floor, I found yet
another stair well. This one was dark and coated with lacy spider webs. It led to what must have
been the children's floor at one point. There was a play room that took up most of the space, along
with two bedrooms with dainty furniture, and the nurse's room. What I mistook for a closet at first
was really a narrow flight of stairs that lead into the attic. A giant rat scampered across my feet. Its
beady eyes glowed red in the flicker of my lighter. It hissed at me. I

A Formalist Approach On A Short Story
LATE PASS
Michael Wraa
Professor Joyce Heyman
English 110
15 February 2015
A Formalist Approach to a Short Story There are so many different things one can learn from
reading a story. Stories vary in length but it seems that your appetite for reading will gauge the kind
of stories you elect to read. People who enjoy long thought out complex reading will enjoy much
longer published works than what a short story has to offer. However there is a large population in
the world of people who do not want to spend days on end reading a novel that is several hundred
pages long and takes days to convey a simple message. In fact, many people want just the opposite
in their reading. Many readers want a story that is short, sweet, and to the point. Something that they
don't need to spend hours or weeks on end reading but instead can get the exact same message or
meaning from instead of having to spend a ridiculous amount of time reading a much larger work.
Authors often want readers use the Formalist approach when reading these short stories as authors
use words to convey the same message or meaning in less text than a much longer published work
with hundreds of pages, it does this by using the text itself as a canvas for creativity. The Formalist
approach is a great tool when it comes to writing short stories, and its use in Good Country People
by Flannery O'Connor is classic example of how the Formalist Approach can be so effective in such
a short story. Authors are incredibly

Short Stories : Personal Responsibility
Do you feel an obligation to think about other people's welfare? If you do, how far does that
responsibility extend? Are you responsible for a sibling, a neighbor, or even a stranger across the
world? The short stories I read help me think about the world around me and enlighten my
understanding of my personal responsibility to others. First, these short stories show personal
responsibility by describing to what degree we are responsible for the weaker or oppressed members
of society. Second, the short stories I read helped me think about to what extent should we be driven
by personal responsibility to act with compassion, empathy, and concern for others. Finally, short
stories exemplify how we are personally responsible for our friends and how we live our own lives.
First, short stories show personal responsibility by describing to what degree we are responsible for
the weaker or oppressed members of society.Throughout the short stories, I have seen how the
weaker and oppressed member of society are being helped. For example, in the short story
, the
"Scarlet Ibis", the narrator has a responsibility, given to him by his mother, to help his younger
brother who cannot care for himself. As the narrator says in the story, "It seemed so hopeless from
the beginning that it's a miracle I didn't give up. But all of us must have something or someone to be
proud of, and Doodle had become mine. I did not know then that pride is a wonderful, terrible thing,

Essay
The short stories "The Snows of Kilimanjaro" and "The Short Happy Life of Francis Mocomber"
were both written by world renowned author Ernest Hemingway. The two stories are written
completely unrelated to each other; however, both stories have vast similarities in the time and place
in which they take place. Hemingway is a writer that is very methodical in his word choices. When
reading these two stories a second time the reader finds considerable differences in the writing style
the author uses in each story. To demonstrate, three sentences from each story will be compared and
contrasted to show the differences in word usage, word connotation, and to find which story is
written better. The initial pair

The word "plummeted" as defined in the American Heritage Dictionary "is to fall straight down;
plunge".
The two words are close in meaning; however, "plummeted" is a better word for the sheer reason
that the reader can directly visualize the vultures dive toward earth. When the word "plummeted" is
heard a person thinks of plunging to death or fall at in incredible rate. "Plummeted" is much more
dramatic and defining then the word "planed." The word "Planned" could have various images
connected with it. "Planed" leaves the reader too many options when visualizing the vultures decent
to the ground. For example the reader might visualize the vulture gliding down to the ground or
zigzagging to the ground. The word 'Plummeted" is a better defined and more dramatic word.
Making the sentence, "On the far bank of the stream Macomber could see, above the trees, vultures
circling and plummeting down," the better sentence of the two.
The next two sentences, "'You Bitch

" and "'Why not let
up on the bitchery just a little, Margot,' Macomber said, cutting the eland steak and putting some
mashed potato, gravy and carrot on the down–turned fork that tined through the piece of meat,"
again have similarities. For example, in each sentence the husband is calling his wife a bitch of
sorts; however, it is the use of this word that makes these sentences

Short Story And Song Comparison Essay
The story and the song used in this comparison are "The Old Man and the Sea" by Ernest
Hemingway and "Stronger" by Kelly Clarkson. Both of them deal with hope and strong urge of
motivation. However, they deal with it in a distinctive yet a very similar way. This essay will convey
the main settings, plots, and themes differences between the two pieces.
One of the major differences in the two pieces is the setting and the effect of this difference. In the
story, and according to Santiago's relationship with nature, "the old man and the sea" the events are
happening in the rural area beside a sea "The old man lives in a shack made of bud–shields of royal
palm..." (Pg. 15) this describes the fisherman's house and limiting the theme. Meanwhile, the song
"Stronger" is in a more general and open setting in which it sends a theme that could be applied to
all life–sort–obstacles. This difference in settings is essential since it affects the theme either making
it too general, or too specific, even though the sea is used as a symbol representing "life".
The plots of the story and the song are completely distinctive. The story is about an old, lonely, and
humble fisherman who is having hard times fishing in the sea. Purposely,

If you overcome them, then basically, you become stronger. For instance, in "Stronger" Kelly
demonstrates a few examples of obstacles from life, that are relatable "Doesn't mean I'm over cause
you're gone" (line 16) and tells us that they are experiences in which we learn and get wiser from.
This is similar to the story "the old man and the sea" in which the fisherman is motivating him every
day to try harder and continue hoping. Basically, if the obstacles put you down, you've basically
made no growth or progress. But if it doesn't kill you, you've grown

Essay on A&P: Short Story
Professor Al Osborn, M.A

February 9, 2007 A&P. Discuss John Updike's short story, "A&P" is fictional in a sense that it has a
common pattern that leads the reader through a series of events. These events began when three
young ladies in bathing suits walk in A&P, and catch the eye of a young man named, Sammy. He
seems to favor the chunkier girl of the three that walk in to the store. As the story continues, Sammy
curiously watches the provocative young ladies as they stroll through the store looking for groceries.
In this fictional story, Sammy describes all three noticeable ladies, the main girl, "Queenie" he
describes her as the leader of the two other girls. The second young lady he described was the

place at the register. In this event Updike made it known how embarrassed the girls were, he
described Queenie as furious and nervous, it wasn't just Queenie that was embarrassed, the other
two were also blushing with embarrassment
. After the girls left, which now leads us to the
depressing part of the story, when Sammy quits his job, hoping the girls would see his courageous
deed. Unfortunately, they were not able to see him quit his job, because they walked out furiously.
Sammy told Lengel, he didn't have to embarrass the girls in that manner, and Lengel responded, "It
was they who were embarrassing us." (52) It was not the girl's intention to embarrass the store. They
were just buying groceries; they wanted to be in and out of the store. Sammy realized that the girls
did not mean any harm, so he stood up for them. Lengel argued that they were embarrassing the
store and the employees. Sammy stuck to his beliefs, that the young ladies were actually buying
groceries and not looking for attention. So, he left his apron and bow tie on the register and walked

Short Story The river was roaring past the children and their teacher, as the group of kids tried in
vain to understand the teacher's inaudible mutterings. Not one of them could understand or
comprehend what the teacher was saying, and being the lively, uncontrollable brats that they were,
they didn't care anyway. When the teacher stopped talking, he motioned for the children to follow
him along the steep, mud–covered banks of the river. The children understood this and scuttled after
him, along the dangerous route that he had selected for them.

the river, and started out to get it. The other two, Chris and Matthew, noticed what Harry was after
and chased after him frantically. As Chris and Matthew drew closer to Harry, an immense, sudden
gush of water knocked the three kids flat on their faces. Chris, who was quite tubby, and the worst
swimmer, couldn't fight the current, and was swept downstream screaming in terror. Matthew and
Harry however, fought their way back to the banks of the river, petrified at the thought of what
might happen to their friend.
While all of this was happening, the torrential rain persisted. So much so, that the teacher decided to

Essay On A Single Story
My ideas and thoughts about Africa had been changed after I listened to Adichie's speech. The way
she described the danger of a single story was very inspiring to me, and I could relate many of the
experiences I had to her story. I was born in Pakistan and moved to the U.S. in 2007. When I came
to the U.S. I lived in Virginia and went to Freedom Hill Elementary School
. On the first day of
school I sat next to an Indian kid named Sai and he didn't want to sit next to me he told the teacher
that are countries didn't like each other so he wanted to sit somewhere else, but are teacher said she
didn't want to hear any of it. So during the year we had to work on many things as partners, and we
got along great we had many things in common and at the end of the year we became pretty good
friends. At the beginning he probably heard some things about my country and he just assumed that
I was the person he heard from those stories, and after meeting me he had a different understanding
of it. Soon after the year ended my dad found a better job in California so we moved here. I lived in

Reflection Of A Short Story
I enjoy writing short stories because the activity allows me to express my creativity and speak my
mind. However, I often have trouble finishing compositions, and my English professors will often
tell me I need to improve my work. Recently, I wrote a short story titled "Unexpected" for a fiction–
writing class and made countless changes to the tale based on several guidelines. The revisions to
"Unexpected" have benefited my story, but I could have done more to improve it. My original story
served as an impromptu launching pad for the revisions, which expanded my work into a more
stable, detailed narrative. However, I probably should have asked for help from tutors and my
fiction professor, Jackie because they understand short stories

But three methods of revisions helped me better understand the changes I made to my narrative.
First, I printed my original work and jotted down revisions based on 25 questions from a book I
study in fiction class, What If? Writing Exercises for Fiction Writers. These notes helped me add a
wide variety of details to my story. Next, I typed my new story and used a grammar check website
called PaperRater to improve the style of my tale. This aspect includes, of course, grammar, but also
transitional phrases (I am not sure if those are important in a short story) as well as vocabulary. And
eventually, I tweaked my composition after carefully reading my story to myself. I learned that
reading your own work aloud helps you further comprehend any revisions you should make. As a
result of following these revision guidelines, I improved my story dramatically; it more than tripled
the word count of my story to about one thousand words. Furthermore, I usually only use
PaperRater for revising fiction and nonfiction works I write for English classes. My new technique
of modifying my narratives have truly expanded my stories as well as my imagination. But despite
these accomplishments, I could have further improved my story. When I wrote a poetry explication
essay for nonfiction writing class, I did not just turn to PaperRater. I asked my professor, Ben, for
help writing the essay during his office hours. I wish I could have done

The entire story was just a snapshot that occurred in his mind before his death. Ambrose Bierce
purposefully continues to build the anticipation that the devout Union soldier had escaped, only to
drop the reader into a tale of demise and overall doom. 'The Red Convertible' by Louise Endrich
was written in 1984 and revolves around a Vietnam veteran and his brother. Lyman Lamartine is a
young man whose brother has just returned from the Vietnam War and has been traumatized by what
he had seen overseas.
Before the war, Lyman and his brother Henry were extremely close. Before Henry departed for the
war, and as Lyman recounts in the story, the two bonded over a red convertible. This car proves to
be symbolic, both throughout, and at the end of the story, due to the change in Henry's behavior,
illustrated by this quote from when Henry returns: "We had always been together before. But he was
such a loner now that I didn't know how to take it."
When Henry returns, he has no desire to ride in the red convertible, no desire to wear the bright
colored clothes he used to dawn–– instead Henry just liked to sit around and sob about the war. The
quote from the middle of the story, speaking about the television, and how Henry just sat "in front of
it, watching it, and that was the only time he

David Short Story
SHORT STORY
David was a 45 year old Scot living in Florence for the past 15 years. He had been there for his
summer vacation with his brother and fell in love with the city. He loved it so much that he did not
even go back home. His brother died shortly after their trip. David could never fully process and
recover from that loss. But if that was not enough, his parents just ignored David and wanted
distance from him out of fear to be hurt again. David took it personal and swore to himself that he
would never talk to them. A promise that he has held since then. To compensate with the loneliness
he plunged into work.

It was the end of the day and David was about to close the café. When turning around, he spotted a
figure at the end of the empty Ponte Vecchio. It was very unusual that the Ponte
Vecchio was empty, but then today was the day of the foundation of Florence and everyone was
taking part in the celebrations at the Piazza Duomo. David got his bicycle, as usual, and was about
to ride off when the figure yelled something. It was the boy again. David felt sorry for the little boy

ask him where his parents where. The boy didn't understand him. So David tried to show the boy
through hand hand gestures to follow him and decided to take him home. On the way they

Once they were home David prepared some dinner. When suddenly there was a knock at the door.
David opened the door, not knowing what a mistake that was. He opened the door and got knocked

First Impression Of Short Stories
My first impression on short stories is that they are short and are meant for children to develop their
reading habit. I thought short stories is never a thing for teenagers or adults. The plot is usually
simple and straightforward, there wouldn't be a lot of twists and turns, like a simple children story,
so I think they are not exciting and in–depth enough for us to read and be engaged in the plot. I used
to think short stories are used to teach basic values like honesty, being compassion, but not things
that are truer and relatable to the cruel reality, such as racism, discrimination, or about distorted
ideas of relationships. However, after learning about short stories, and having read stories of
different genres, I realised that short

And a man wants to buy a love potion just so his crush would like him. The author used sarcasm to
discuss the twisted idea of love. In the story, Austen, the customer is driven by his self–centered love
that neglects the desire of Diana, his crush, he wants to force her into loving him. He wants Diana to
put him as her no.1 priority and live her life around him. And he doesn't realise that he should do
something for Diana as well. This is definitely not the correct way of loving someone as both sides
must put an effort in the relationship so it would last longer, isn't it? We all talk about equality and
fairness so relationship should not one–sided. The author also mentioned extreme love could lead to
hatred, which is foreshadowed in the story by the role of the merchant, who sells the poison in the
first place and also welcome Austen to come back for the second time. This story reflects the recent
society. Most people think love in a weird way such that they would be satisfied while their partner
suffers. The story put all these phenomena in a conversation that perhaps lasted only for 15 minutes
which surprises me as the complicated situations could be simplified and illustrated with few lines,
and it clarifies and we learnt

Essay On Conflict In Short Stories
The conflict is one of the main components of the short story. It gives us two elements thrill and
attractions. Heroes of the short story Can develop certain types of conflict in all parts of the short
story. Such conflicts may be with the hostile elements or with other characters in the story. There are
certain types of conflict and each type has its own function. The first type is the internal conflict
caused by some of the ideas and beliefs that are within the parties to the conflict. The second type is
an external conflict, resulting from external forces that affect one way or the other in the protagonist.

Essay on Short Stories and Poetry
Short Stories and Poetry There are many different forms of writing that all fall under the name
literature. These different ways to create literature are often categorized into specific genres. Some
of the genres have more in common with each other than others. Two genres, the short story and the
poem, share many similar aspects. Both the short story and the poem can successfully send powerful
messages or tell complex stories in a very short amount of words. Both genres contain carefully
manipulated language that quickly yet effectively establishes the meaning of the short story or
poem. Point of view is a prominent aspect in controlling short stories and poetry. The works are thus

William Faulkner's "A Rose of Emily" (p. 443) begins immediately with a startling statement about
Miss Emily's death. Faulkner creates a first sentence that describes how "our whole town went to her
funeral" (1), using of course the first person form of "we" (28, 43, 46, etc...) The narrator is most
likely one of the townspeople who represents the point of view of the entire town. Through the use
of plural first person narration, the author makes the reader feel as if though they are part of the
story, grasping his or her interest more quickly. Faulkner employs this first person narration in the
first sentence of his story, thus immediately capturing the reader's attention. The reader's
engagement in the story also adds to its emotionality. By feeling as though he or she is a part of the
story, the reader often feels sadness, joy and other emotions with the characters of the story. When
the townspeople were "surprised when Homer Barron...was gone" (46), the use of "we" (46) forces
the reader to feel the same confusion and shock that the townspeople do. The first person helps to
enrich the variability and appeal of the short story.
This use of first person to strengthen the feeling of the

Original Writing: Short Story
It was the night of the year that few children can sleep. The night when everyone hopes that snow

As many had hoped, snow was falling. It slowly covered the houses and streets in a thick blanket.
The moon shone her silver light down on the white world, and but for one, there was nobody to

the spectacle was a small boy of five, or six years.

saw the church was lit up inside. There was light coming from behind a man on a big cross, and two
huge Christmas trees shone in heavenly splendor. Looking at the man on the cross, he had a faint
recollection. He half–remembered, a long time ago, that someone reading from a big book had said
that the man on the cross would come on Christmas. That he came every Christmas.
The little boy supposed that if anyone would help him, it would be the man inside. He loved
everyone. So, the little boy laid down in front of the church, and as he slipped off into sleep, a
glimmer of hope, that the man would come and save him from the cold and loneliness, warmed his
heart. The snow continued to fall, and bells jingled far in the distance. Presents were laid under
trees, and visions of sugar plums danced in most children's heads. But not the little boy who slept on

Short Stories Literature Review
Short Stories Literature Review Fear can have different effects on human emotions. Sometimes fear
can keep you from confronting a conflict or situation directly. Being fearful is not the right reaction
to have. The right reaction is usually to be cautious. In the five sorties I read fear was a factor in how
the character resolved their external or internal conflict in the story. All the short stories share the
themes fear, conflict, deception, jealousy, vulnerability and closure. The audience for this literature
review is for mature readers who may let fear affect their daily lives. This review was written to
show how fear can overwhelm them if they do not take proper steps to confront your fear. Once the
reader reads the review they can reflect on the topics for a better way to deal with something they
fear. Fear is an overall theme of all five short stories. In each story fear influences the characters to
react in different ways. In. "The Cask of Amontillado" Montresor had some type of fear of being
constantly belittled. Once Montresor made up his mind to exact revenge on Fortunato he was also
fearful of being caught. Fortunato was also fearful towards the end when he realizes that he is not
being pranked. The story "The Masque of the Red Death" Prince Prospero is the ruler of
countryside. Prince Prospero is fearful of dying of the illness and being lonely. In the "The
Premature Burial" the narrator is scared of death, his condition, and being wrongly buried. The royal

Short Story Of Short Stories
One thing that's great about short stories is how quickly they can ruin your life. Maybe you start
reading one over your lunch break and, if it's the right one, before that peanut butter cup you
brought for dessert even has a chance to finish its melting shape–shift into some kind of sugary
cement, the whole world has been destroyed around you and then rebuilt, and nothing is quite the
same again. This happens whether you like it or not. Great stories practice this violent beauty on you
in a variety of ways: some by making an absurd world familiar (or vice versa), some with a slow
burn, some with a voice that colonizes your thoughts. Some do it quietly, almost without you even
noticing, and some do it with high wire acts of imagination or intellect that make you into a
breathless witness. The trick, then, is finding the right story, one that is capable of such a thing. This
is no easy task. Tastes differ, of course, and it can be confusing to spot the small boat of a great story
on the wide sea of fiction. What any reader can offer you in terms of guidance is actually the same
thing that any good writer can offer you with the story itself: a way of saying, This is what moved
me and made me feel strange and alive in some way; here, why don't you give it a try? In that spirit
and in no particular order, here are ten short stories you might've missed that ambushed me with
their odd wonder: 1. "The Zero Meter Diving Team" by Jim Shepard (BOMB Magazine) This
curious,

Shiloh Short Story
The short story "Shiloh" by Bobbie Ann Mason gives insight into how a tragic event can change the
course of one's life. In "Shiloh", there is a man named Leroy married to a woman named Norma
Jean. Leroy was a truck driver who was on the road for many years, however due to a devastating
accident on the road he had returned home to recover from his injuries. Since Leroy had been gone
for such a long period of time, Norma Jean was not entirely comfortable having him around the
house. To add to the dismal reality of Leroy and Norma Jean's situation, Leroy's presence in the
house reminded Norma of their baby that had died of SIDS (
Sudden infant death syndrome
) before
Leroy had gone on the road to work. Leroy not having much to do because of his injury, spends
most of his time making replica cabins out of Popsicle sticks hoping to one day build a real cabin for
him and Norma Jean. Since they got married Leroy promised he would one day build a house for
Norma Jean. However, Norma Jean is not interested in living in a cabin. She wants a real house, and
as a result of Leroy's unwillingness to try anything new and productive, she eventually tells Leroy
that she does not want to be with him anymore. Mason's short story "Shiloh" uses different types of
characters and well–chosen symbols to represent the theme of how tragic events can either motivate
a person or completely demoralize them.

Compare and Contrast Two Short Stories
Compare and Contrast Two Short Stories––
Landlady by Roald Dahl and Chemistry by Graham Swift
There are lots of great short stories out there, but in my opinion, both 'Chemistry' by Graham Swift
and 'The Landlady' by Roald Dahl are two of the most unique and effective stories. They share both
similarities and differences throughout. Comparing and contrasting the way the authors use their
inimitable writing style to achieve their intentions in the story will give us more idea how these
stories are alike and distinct.
In a way, these two stories are similar because both the authors had carefully chosen the
words

In the beginning , Billy thought the landlady was 'terribly nice',which he was quite grateful to have
such a nice landlady who give him a well–appointed service, but as the conversations go on, Billy
was then frightened by her weird and creepy contents, he 'sat there staring straight ahead of him into
the far corner of the room, biting his lower lip.' tells the readers that he's begin to frightened and
suspect landlady, foreshadowing the readers that she might be doing something that couldn't be
trusted by Billy.
In another way, these two stories are different because the authors have been using different
perspective when narrating the story. In 'Chemistry', author's written the story in the word of
narrator
, mixing both the perspective of adult and young boy's. Line" My father's death was a far
less remote event than my grandfather's but no more explicable, I was only seven." can be a good
example. Almost the whole story was written in past tense, added to the effect of recalling. He's
shown a grown up man recalling memories when he was back in 7–10 years old. This kind of
writing style makes readers felt more personal, because the subject is 'I', when reading out the story,
readers will feel like they're experiencing the narrators' life, as if they are the narrator. Also, another
interesting fact about this kind of writing style is that if I were to look at the same events in other
character's perspective, it might be another whole different story because
