Crafting Engaging Short Stories: Conflict and Structure Tips

Short Story : A Literary Piece A short–short is a peculiar literary piece. It creates a world, full of characters and wonder in under 2,000 words (roughly 7 pages). Most complete fiction stories are hundreds of pages filled with wonder and conflict. The characters are well developed, as are their back stories. The reader is sucked in and dropped in a world created in the mind of the author. In a short–short you must do just that, but instead of starting a reader in the beginning of the timeline you must drop them in the midst of the storyline. There are many do's and don'ts that must go into writing short–shorts. My first thought was that I would write my short–shorts as flashbacks, but that is nearly impossible to do with the limited word count. A flashback requires you to create the present and then recreate the past with enough detail to keep the reader engaged. Once I came to that conclusion I threw those ideas out. Sadly that left me without any ideas on the type of story that I should create. It wasn't until I was have a discussion with my significant other that he gave me the idea for my first short story presented in this portfolio. This is a unique story, because I brought in a theme from my poetry portfolio and conceptualized it from a different perspective. Conflicts Conflict means a struggle or problem between two opposing groups or individuals. There are two types of conflict: internal and external conflict. An internal conflict is a struggle that is internalized and deals with choices, consequences, or emotions. An internal conflict is a man vs. self struggle. An external conflict is a struggle between the protagonist and another character against nature or some outside force. External conflicts are either man verses man, man verses nature, or man verses society. But, this one is a man verses man conflict because Rainsford is facing a problem with another character in the story. Therefore, Rainsford faces many situations where he has to choose between life or death. Lastly, examples of conflict can be shown in "The Gift of the Magi" by O.Henry. This story is about a cute couple that is willing to do anything to buy each other Christmas presents. An internal conflict faced by Della Young, the protagonist, is when she does not have enough money to buy her husband Jim a present. All Della had was "one dollar and eighty seven cents. Reflection Of A Short Story I enjoy writing short stories because the activity allows me to express my creativity and speak my mind. However, I often have trouble finishing compositions, and my English professors will often tell me I need to improve my work. First, I printed my original work and jotted down revisions based on 25 questions from a book I study in fiction class, What If? Writing Exercises for Fiction Writers. These notes helped me add a wide variety of details to my story. Next, I typed my new story and used a grammar check website called PaperRater to improve the style of my tale. This aspect includes, of course, grammar, but also transitional phrases (I am not sure if those are important in a short story) as well as vocabulary. And eventually, I tweaked my composition after carefully reading my story to myself. I learned that reading your own work aloud helps you further comprehend any revisions you should make. As a result of following these revision guidelines, I improved my story dramatically; it more than tripled the word count of my story to about one thousand words. Furthermore, I usually only use PaperRater for revising fiction and nonfiction works I write for English classes. My new technique of modifying my narratives have truly expanded my stories as well as my imagination. But despite these accomplishments, I could have further improved my story. The Suspense in Short Stories Every story needs suspense if you want to keep readers interested in your writing, and there are many ways you can add it to your story. A few instances of this are using irony to put the reader on the edge of their seat, clues that readers can pick up on and piece together, and imagery to shape images in readers. Three stories that are great examples of this are The Tell–Tale Heart, The Landlady, and The Red Room. The main way Edgar Allan Poe makes suspense in the former, The Tell–Tale Heart, is by using irony. For example, it starts with the narrator professing to the audience that he is not insane: "But why do you say that I have lost control of my mind, why do you say that I am mad? Can you not see that I have full control of my mind" (Poe, 1). It is ironic because the narrator refuses to accept the fact that he is insane even though the readers know he is due to his strange and dangerous behaviors; this creates suspense by making the reader feel unsure of what to believe since this makes the narrator out to be unreliable, and makes them uneasy of what the narrator may do next as they keep spiraling down into their madness and paranoia. Another instance of irony in the story is when the narrator is discussing his murderous plan: "[The narrator is] as friendly to the old man as [he can] be, and warm, and loving" (Poe, 2).
