The people of ancient Greece developed number systems to allow them to express numerical ideas. Many civilizations around the world have developed their own numerals independently; in some cases, those number systems have changed over time to become more streamlined and easier to write and understand. There are two major systems of ancient Greek numerals, one of which is still in common usage in mathematics today. These two systems are called the acrophonic number system and the alphabetic number system. The alphabetic number system still has a place in advanced mathematics, although it has changed over the years; the acrophonic number system has long since fallen out of use. The alphabetic system used Greek letters to represent numbers; alpha (α) represents 1, beta (β) represents 2, and so on. To unlock this lesson you must be a Study.com Member. Their alphabet was adapted from the Phoenician alphabetic system; the Latin alphabet used in English today comes from the same original source. Ancient Greek people used their alphabet not just to write words but also to write numbers. Like the Arabic number system used in many parts of the world today, the Greek numbering system used base-10. There were 27 letters in the ancient Greek alphabet (three are no longer used in contemporary Greek). The first nine numerals (there was no symbol for zero) corresponded to the first nine letters of the alphabet. The letter used for 6 was called digamma; it is no longer in use:
Numbers 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 Greek numeralsα β γ δ ε ϝ ζ η θ The next nine letters of the alphabet were used to represent 10, 20, 30, and so on. Again, one of the letters is no longer in use. It was called koppa, and it was used to represent 90: To unlock this lesson you must be a Study.com Member. Numbers 1-9, 10-90 (round numbers only), and 100-900 (hundreds only) were each assigned a letter; those letters were then combined to make any number between 1 and 999.
