New Social Movements: An Overview
Before defining new social movements, it is important to first clarify what a social movement is in sociology. A social movement is any group action (or series of actions) aimed at creating social change or preventing social change. Traditionally, social movements have been understood as movements for social
change regarding political or economic goals, like establishing laws against allowing children to work (i.e.,
child labor laws).
New social movements differ from old social movements not necessarily based on the recency of the movement's foundation. Rather, a new social movement (NSM) is a movement centered on issues of identity and human rights. Furthermore, NSMs are often anti-authoritarian and seek change in cultural spheres and civil society rather than through initiating institutional, state-centered change.

New Social Movement Theory
New social movement theory is a more recent way of understanding emerging social movements. The term is often credited to sociologist Alberto Melucci, who wrote in New Social Movements: From Ideology to Identity that the element of "newness" is "a relative concept." In this case, the phrase "new social movement theory" use used to signal "comparative differences between the historical forms of class conflict and today's emergent forms of collective action." Melucci believes that, as of late,
economic classes as "real social groups are withering away" and so new concepts to describe how people organize are necessary.
The Universal Declaration of Human Rights from December 1948. It is the first international recognition of shared human rights, encompassing ideas espoused by many nations in recent centuries.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between new and old social movements?
According to new social movement (NSM) theory, the primary difference between old and new social movements is their focus. Many older social movements focused on economic class, while newer movements tend to be centered on identity and human rights. According to this definition, some modern-times movements are not considered NSMs, while some from human history are. The words "new" and "old" depend not on when in history the movement took place but rather on its primary objective.
What are some major social movements?
Some major and recent social movements have included the Civil Rights Movement (1950s-1960s), the women's liberation movements of the 1960s-1970s, the gay liberation movement (1960s-1970s), and the transgender rights movement (1960s-present). Note that all of these movements focus on social issues, identity, and human rights.
