Annotated Bibliography Fall 2023 Professor: Brandon West ( westb5@erau.edu ) Office Hours: MW 12:30-3:30 p.m., TR 1:30-2:-30 p.m., or by appointment Learning Outcomes Addressed: 2, 3, 4, 5 Grade Percentage: 15% Final Draft Due Date: Friday, November 3rd by 11:59 p.m. on Canvas as a Word, PDF, or copied and pasted file (NOT as a link) Science marches on. And so do knowledge and human thought. These facts indicate that, regardless of what you are researching, someone else has probably beaten you to it. Thus, to learn your topic, you must become familiar with how others have approached it. This is not just a hurdle, though; it is also a boon! Looking at others’ ideas and attempts to address the topic will be highly informative about what has worked and what has not worked. So, this research process can save you quite a bit of time and energy in the end. Step One : Select at least 6 sources you plan to use in your Research Essay. These sources need to clearly and directly pertain to your final project topic (that you have selected from the list of possible topics I have provided and that I have approved). Criteria for sources: Your sources should be credible and should contribute to your argument. Please refer to our class exercise on evaluating sources if you are unsure of whether a source is trustworthy. Step Two : You will then organize those 6 sources into an annotated bibliography. First, generate correct APA citations for each of your sources. Step Three : Sort your correct APA citations into alphabetical order and bold each citation . Be sure to include your hanging indents. The citation will go at the top of each annotation. Step Four : Sort your annotations into 2 clearly labelled sections: Summary and Analysis. Please place your sections in this order. Step Five : In your summary , you are objectively describing what happens in the source. Do not evaluate the source here! Your goal is to walk us through the source and to remain as detached as possible. In a short paragraph, summarize the source in your own words . Do not take the author’s language here: doing so may constitute plagiarism. Phrase your summary in terms of what the author is doing. So, instead of writing “In 2008, 1400 new species were discovered,” you would write, “Roberts starts the article by noting how many new species scientists discovered in 2008.” Incidentally, I made that fact up, but the point stands. Notice how the second version is clearly not advancing an argument about the subject. It is summarizing what Roberts is doing at that point in her article. That is what you need to do in your summary.
Step Six : In your analysis , you should write a short paragraph in which you evaluate the source and describe how you might use it in your research essay. *Each annotation should be at least 150 words long. Your full annotated bibliography should be at least 1000 words long, not including header information. * Your annotated bibliography should follow our course formatting guidelines. It should also have a word count at the end. As always, all work must be your own, original work done for this class. Attempting to pass another’s ideas or words off as your own is plagiarism. This is a formal writing assignment. Your work should adhere to the conventions of formal writing and Standard English. Such matters as spelling, grammar, syntax, formatting, punctuation, style, organization, and fluency will count toward your grade.
