ENGL 1405 – World Literature Week 4 Learning Journal Buck, Timothy The groundbreaking technologies shown in Logan's Run were previously supposed to be the stuff of science fiction. Instead, the film showcases many cutting-edge technologies, including biometric surveillance cameras, laser weapons, and futuristic transportation methods. In the film, biometric security cameras like these were used to identify and follow people as they traveled across the metropolis. The cameras' biometric data (including face recognition) was utilized to identify people and follow their movements. These technologies are already commonplace, with face recognition software in everything from surveillance cameras to cell phones. However, misuse of biometric data and the ability to track people without their knowledge have raised privacy concerns. In Logan's Run, laser weapons played an essential role in self-defense and warding off attackers. While real-world use of laser guns is still in its infancy, related technologies like directed energy weapons and high-powered lasers for cutting and welding are making great strides. However, widespread adoption requires careful consideration of safety concerns and potential misuse. Finally, Logan's Run's futuristic modes of transportation are conceptually like today's high-speed trains and autonomous vehicles. In the film, individuals were transported to their destinations in autonomous pods that required no human intervention. More and more people are using autonomous cars nowadays, which has the potential to revolutionize the transportation industry. However, infrastructure and regulation are two examples of the still present yet substantial obstacles. In conclusion, Logan's Run is hardly the first work of science fiction to accurately foresee technological developments in the future. Some technologies shown in the film have already been realized, while others are either in the works or may never be realized for various reasons. Therefore, before general adoption, any new technological discovery's potential advantages and negatives should be thoroughly weighed.
