Assistive Technology Using the information from the module, Submit your responses to the following question into the Assignment dropbox. 1. Based on information from the IRIS module, describe the relationship between Assistive Technology and Accommodations. 2. Provide a definition and 2 examples of low-tech, mid-tech, and high-tech devices listed in the IRIS module. 3.Briefly describe AT Services. 4. According to the IRIS module how are At devices evaluated for effectiveness? Based on information from the IRIS module, describe the relationship between Assistive Technology and Accommodations. Accommodations can be given to students who cannot succeed in class when learning the general way. They do not change what the student learns. Accommodations only change the mode of learning. Assistive technology is a type of accommodation. All assistive technology is an accommodation. However, not all accommodations are assistive technology. There are different types of accommodations. There are setting accommodations, presentation accommodations, timing and scheduling accommodations, and response accommodations. Assistive technology would fit more into the categories of response and presentation accommodations. (IRIS 2020). Provide a definition and 2 examples of low-tech, mid-tech, and high-tech devices listed in the IRIS module. There are different types of assistive technology. Low Tech devices are readily available and inexpensive. They usually don't need batteries and they dont require electricity. Some examples of these are, page holders and modified scissors. Mid tech devices are usually digital and need batteries or another source for power. Two examples of this are audio books and a digital recorder. High tech devices are more computer based. They are sophisticated and are able to be specifically designed to fit a specific student needs. Some examples of these are tablets and another example is screen readers. (IRIS 2020). Briefly describe AT Services Assistive technology services are any service that assists a child with a disability in the selection, acquisition, or use of an assistive technology device. These services provide
many services to students. They evaluate the student needs and choose the best device for the student. These services also help with the buying, leasing, and acquiring of the device. They help with selecting, fitting, adapting, repairing, and/or replacing devices when needed. Coordination of all services needed for the student with the device is done. This could be device education and therapy. They provide training and technical assistance to people who will need to know how to use the device. This includes the student, parents, teachers, and anyone else who would need to know. (IRIS 2020). According to the IRIS module how are At devices evaluated for effectiveness? Assistive technology can be evaluated for effectiveness by collecting and analyzing data. The teacher or evaluator should determine what aspect they will be measuring. They should collect baseline data secondly. This is data on whatever is going to be measured before or without the use of assistive technology. Next, data should be collected when the student uses the assistive technology. Lastly, they should evaluate the before and after data. By doing this, they will be able to tell if the student is doing better or the same with the assistive technology. (IRIS 2020). References The IRIS Center. (2010, 2020).
