Once you have completed this worksheet, save your worksheet file and upload it to Brightspace to submit this assignment. Question Response Chosen Region Japan 1. Location and Connectivity: What are the absolute and relative locations of your selected region? How does this region connect to others? Japan is an island nation settled in the Pacific Ocean, located in East Asia. It has an absolute location of 36.2048° N, 138.2529° E. Japan is comprised of four main islands, Honshu (36.1700° N, 138.0400° E), Hokkaido (43.2203° N, 142.8635° E), Kyushu (32.5900° N, 130.8000° E), and Shikoku (33.7432° N, 133.6375° E). In terms of connectivity, Japan is connected to other regions through its extensive transportation network. Japan has a fast and reliable train network as well as many airports and an efficient road system. It is well connected to the rest of the world through its Narita and Haneda airports, which are major hubs for the region. Japan is home to the famous Shinkansen (bullet train) system, which brings people all across the country.
Question Response 2. Physical Characteristics: How would you describe the climate, physiography, landscape, and natural hazards of your selected region? Address at least three of the physical characteristics listed above for this worksheet. Note: This is part of the Place theme of geography. Japan has a diverse climate due to its unique, elongated shape and its various mountain ranges. The northern regions like Hokkaido have a humid continental climate with cold winters and mild summers, while the southern regions like Okinawa have a subtropical climate with mild winters and hot, humid summers. Western Japan experiences hot a humid summers and moderate winters, while Eastern Japan experiences hot, humid summers and cold winters. (“Japan Meteorological Agency | General Information on Climate of Japan,” 2023). The land is geographically diverse and known for its mountainous landscape, due to its location amongst several tectonic plates. It is home to the Japanese Alps and Mount Fuji, both of which are prominent land features. This region is prone to earthquakes as well as volcanic eruptions due to its location in the Ring of Fire, and tropical typhoons are also common.
Question Response 3. Human Characteristics: What are the language families/groups, religions, races, and cultures of your selected region? What are the region’s population density and economic development? Address at least three of the human characteristics listed above for this worksheet. Note: This also is part of the Place theme of geography. While the primary language in Japan is Japanese, there are various other languages and dialects spoken across different parts of the country. Its main religions are Shinto, Buddhism, and Confucianism, but there are parts of Japan in which Christianity is practiced (“FSI | SPICE - Japanese Religions,” 2022). In terms of population, Japan ranks 11 th in the world with 125 million in 2020 (Bureau, 2021). The majority of Japan’s population is homogeneous, with the vast majority being Japanese, but other minority groups like Ainu, Ryukyuan, and Korean populations among them. The population varies across the country, with major cities like Tokyo and Osaka having higher population densities compared to more rural areas. Japan is recognized as one of the world’s largest economic powers, boasting highly developed fields of industry like electronics, automotive manufacturing, electronics, and robotics. This nation is the world’s third largest automotive supplier, has the largest electronic industry, and is considered one of the world’s most innovative countries (“Japanese Economy — Encyclopedia of Japan,” 2013).

Question Response 4. Human/Environm ent Interactions: How do the physical and human characteristics interact to produce notable observations of the landscape in your selected region? Address at least three of this worksheet's human/environme ntal characteristics listed above. There are many noticeable observations that can be made when looking at human and environmental interaction in Japan. Its mountainous terrain and agricultural practices have led to things like terraced rice fields, especially in areas like Honshu, where steep slopes require farmers to construct terraces to maximize farmable land (“Japan’s Beautiful Landscapes with Terraced Paddy Fields: Tanada | Web Japan,” 2020). Another noticeable interaction is the way major urban cities like Tokyo have moved towards vertical expansion due to Japan’s limited land availability. Towering skyscrapers and compact housing are a result of major urban development in these cities (Asta Thrastardottir, 2014). Lastly, there is emphasis on sacred shrines and preservation of natural areas. One of the religions practiced in Japan is Shintoism, and the interaction between religion and the environment can be seen in the various shrines and sacred spaces along Japan’s coasts and in its forests (“Architecture and Sacred Spaces in Shinto | ORIAS,” 2013). 5. Movement: With how much ease and ability do ideas, goods, and people flow in and out of your selected region? What drives this movement? The movement of goods, ideas, and people is facilitated by Japan’s transportation networks, international trade, and tourism. The extensive network of airports like the ones in Tokyo, Osaka, and other cities allow for convenient air travel, while Japan’s high speed bullet train connects major cities on the islands. Japan is also a major player in global trade, exporting high-quality manufactured goods like electronics and machines. The export-oriented economy of Japan further drives the movement of goods out of the country and contributes to economic growth. Japan is also a popular tourist destination, attracting millions every year to their unique landscapes and bustling cities; in fact, in 2019 alone, nearly 600 million domestic trips to Japan took place (“Japan Tourism Statistics 2023: The Ultimate Guide,” 2023). Lastly, Japan is known for its technological advances and innovations and have contributed towards global knowledge sharing and collaboration through its telecommunication advances.
