SCI 100 Module Six Activity Template: Science in the Real World Instructions First, choose one video from the module resources to watch. You should use points made in the video you chose, and any other course resources, to support your responses to the questions below. Replace the bracketed text with your responses. Apply the scientific lens to a personal experience or event. I chose to focus on the "The Earth is Full" TED talk video. This video made me reflect on many of my own perspectives regarding the population. In high school I wrotea free-choice paper about the potential of a moral and intellectual exam to determine one's readiness to have children--preventing those of lower intelligence as well as the morally corrupt from procreating over and over, and how this would fix both the population issue world-wide as well as lower crime and violence rates. Obviously, there are a few democratic issues with this but I also believed that the United States was not intelligent enough as a population to be a democracy in general. Regardless, this paints a very specific baseline for my views on population control. the TED talk reminded me that this reality was locked in as a fact before I was born and would likely continue to make life worse for humans after I am gone until the species goes extinct entirely. And that our efforts during our lifetimes are incredibly important for our experience and our children. While our effort may be destroyed beyond our lifespan, the efforts given in the moment and over time that we do have yeilds results we get to see. Explain the value of being a scientifically informed citizen within your community. Being scientifically informed is incredibly important because our government would often prefer we be left in the dark about the realities of the world. The knowledge of sciences allows us to understand the plants and animals around us, the weather patterns, the way our bodies work, and how to fix them when theyre not well, and basically everything that surrounds us. Each field requires a knowledge of some sort of science, whether its identified as such or not. And the more informaton you have the better you can create hypothesis in your daily life for problem solving. Discuss the obligation of citizens to be scientifically literate and how that could affect global contemporary issues. As we continue to rocket toward a "doom" caused by climate change-- rising tides, increased natural disasters etc - it becomes increasingly important for every individual to know little ways of slowing the speed. The knowledge regarding the environmental impact of certain businesses such as crude oils and plastics, and how reducing their use can clear the air and reduce ozone damage over time is now something tht every suburban house should know in order to "help". However it is the multi-billion dollr corporate factories that are causing the ost damage and have no regard for the environmental impact, as long as they have money flowing inot their pockets all the while.
