DB 8 In the field of graphic design, creativity is frequently hailed as the secret to success. But great creativity also carries a great deal of responsibility. I believe one of the most important ethical responsibilities of graphic designers is honesty.  Verifying that a design appropriately depicts the good or service it is promoting is crucial. Designers also have to steer clear of deceptive or false advertising. In a biblical worldview, honesty is marked as being free from deceit or untruthfulness and being sincere. 2 Corinthians 8:21 states, “For we aim at what is honorable not only in the Lord's sight but also in the sight of man” (English Standard Version, 2 Cor. 8.21). An honest life is important on so many levels from relationships with spouses and children, at our workplace, and interacting with our neighbors.   Another important ethical responsibility is respect for diversity. Avoiding offensive imagery and stereotypes is essential because they can reinforce negative biases. In a biblical worldview, people, God’s final creation, are diverse. He did not create us as clones or robots. We must be willing to set diversity aside in favor of unity in spirit. So, we should respect everyone and maintain a peaceful environment. Ephesians 4:3 states, “Eager to maintain the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace” (English Standard Version, Eph. 4.3). I believe that when we exalt our preferences over unity, we become demanding and proud, rather than selfless and forgiving. The last important ethical responsibility is intellectual property. Designers are required to honor other people's intellectual property rights. This entails staying away from plagiarism and making sure that any content or photos used have the appropriate license. Ethically and biblically stealing or copying someone else’s work without permission is not good behavior. God has ordained that stealing is wrong. This would imply that if you say that something is yours when it is not yours, you have sinned against God, as well as your fellow man. Colossians 3:9 says, “ Do not lie to one another, seeing that   you have put off   the old self   with its practices” (English Standard Version, Col. 3.9). As Graphic designers, we have an important role to play in shaping public perception as well as considering the ethical implications of our work. References The ESV Study Bible . Crossway, 2012.
