pCollision Safety Device for an Egg Reflection
Each student must complete their own reflection, in their own words, in complete
sentences.
For these evaluation questions, you will be asked to look at your designs. You may use
the same design for more than one question if it is the right answer for that question,
you would simply paste the same picture into the space provided before writing about
your evidence and reasoning.
Evaluating Your Designs
(1) In the design document for the Egg Collision Safety Device, you designed three
different devices. Look at your three designs. Imagine an egg falling from 2 meters
above the device. Which design has the most stable base? In other words, which design
do you think will have the best chance of remaining standing after the egg hits it? Paste
your drawing of the design in the box below:
(2) Why do you believe the device above is the most stable, provide evidence and
reasoning in the box below:
I think this is the most stable with the amount of support it has
surrounding it.
(3) Looking at your three designs, which design will provide the greatest increase in the
impact time between the egg and the floor? Paste your drawing of the design in the box
below:
(4) Why do you believe the device above will provide the greatest increase in impact
time between the egg and the floor? Provide evidence and reasoning in the box below:
As it does have paper rings surrounding it, it has a aspect of springiness
that may help it increase impact between the egg and the floor.
(5) Looking at your three designs, which design would be the easiest to build in terms of
time, effort, and materials? Paste your drawing of the design in the box below:
Choosing a Design
(6) It is now time to choose a device. Based on your answers to the questions above, and
any other factors you may be considering, which of your designs do you believe is the
best design for this challenge? In the box below, insert a drawing of your Collision Safety
Device.

(7) In words, describe the Egg Collision Safety Device you have chosen.
This design basically consists of multiple pieces of paper rolled into
cylinders that act as suspension and support around the outside of the
egg.
(8) Why did you choose this design? Use the answers to the previous evaluation
questions as your evidence. Use the terms force, impulse, and time in your reasoning. If
you need to, rewatch some of the videos from earlier in the unit (Hewitt-Drewit
Momentum, AsStemble Impulse and Momentum, the Death of Gwen Stacy).
I used this design as I believe it spreads out force equally when taking
impact. As a result this also increases the impact time between the egg
and the floor. As such yielding a high impulse.
(9) What was the cost of your design? How did cost factor into your design decision?
The cost of this design is $10800. I tried to utilize as many resources as I
could in this design to create the most stable design.
(10) Do you see any way to lower the cost of your design while still keeping it effective?
Cut the papers in half to half the cost used in paper.
(11) What is one change you could make to your Collision Safety Device to improve upon
the design?
If I had more paper to use, I could provide more support
(12) How is your Collision Safety Device similar to a car’s airbag? You must use the
following terms in your writing: momentum, impulse, force, impact time.
My device is similar to that of an airbag in that it aims to increase the
impact time between the two surfaces. As such increasing the impulse
value as well. Though in different ways, they both reduce the force and
momentum of an object or person before hitting the surface.
The Analysis of a Fall
Watch this video about a skydiver who broke a world record by jumping out of an
airplane at 25,000 ft without a parachute:
World First - Skydiver Luke Aikins Jumps 25000 Feet Into Net With No Parachute
(13) Describe how Luke Aikins was able to survive the fall.
Your answer must
include the terms: force, time, and momentum.
Luke Aikins was able to survive the fall due to a variety of factors. Most
importantly there must have been enough time for Luke to fall within the
net so that it completely reduces his force and momentum to the point of
equilibrium. As well as him decelerating at a moderate pace.
(14) The video explains that Luke reached a speed of 120 mph (which is about 53.6 m/s).
If Luke has a mass of about 73.6 kg, what was his momentum?
3944.96
(15) What was his momentum after he safely landed?
Near zero.
(16) Define impulse (do not say the sudden desire or urge to do something)
Change in momentum.
(17) Here’s a tricky one. If the average rib bones (some of the easiest bones in the body
to break) require about 3300 N of force to break, and Luke didn’t break any bones, what
can you say about the impact time (how long the net took to slow his body to a stop).
HINT: You probably should be using the information from questions 12-14
The impact time was a duration long enough so that his body would be
decelerated enough and not much force would be exerted onto his body.
(18) How is the net that Luke used similar to safety features in a car? (You must discuss
at least two safety features and use the terms impulse, momentum, force, and time).
It’s similar in a way to an airbag in how it aims to quickly decrease the
subject’s momentum and force over a long or short period of time. It is
also similar to how seatbelts increase impulse in a short amount of time
on impact.
(19) Compare the impulses, forces, and impact times on a car crashing head on into a
brick wall versus a car sliding to a stop by skidding against a wall.
A car crashing directly into a wall would have really high impulse value
and force with small impact times. While a car skidding against a wall
would have moderate impulse value with moderate force with a longer
impact time.

Watch this video on the science behind concussions:
What happens when you have a concussion? - Clifford Robbins
(20) Thinking back on the articles we read and the videos we watched, explain how a
concussion occurs during a collision with the head, using the terms change of
momentum, force, impulse, and time.
As one’s head collides against a surface, there is nothing to facilitate a
high impulse value to reduce the amount of momentum and force being
exerted on one's head and brain. As well as a smaller impact time.
(21) We watched videos, read articles, and discussed in class the problems with long
term brain damage that can occur with repeated hits to the head. Using the concepts we
have learned in physics of momentum, conservation of momentum, elastic and inelastic
collisions and impulse, choose one sport from the following list and suggest a way that
we could reduce head injuries or reduce the amount of chronic brain damage that occurs
over the lifetime of the athlete. (football, softball/baseball, cheerleading, boxing/martial
arts/or MMA)
In boxing, gloves are often used but that just facilitates fighters to aim for
the head. As such maybe if other precautions were taken, then less
concussions would occur as a result.

I have a wooden toy train that runs on wooden tracks. I would like to place two ESP-WROOM-32 Boards on top of the train. Broadcast communication (which involves radio frequency, not Wi-Fi) would help communicate about the train's lateness to five other wooden trains on the same track. Local communication would help communicate to the train station about the train's lateness. I would also need radio frequency Tx-Rx Modules for discharging and undergoing the signal, and repeaters just in case the signal loses power due to long-distance traveling. My wooden train should be automated. It should run at 4 inches per second, keep a minimum distance of 30 seconds away from the other wooden trains, and make a 17-second-long stop every 500 seconds.
What's the procedure to connect the components?
What's the Arduino code (C++) for this project?
