Topic 6: Being a digital curator Question 1 Can you define ‘digital information’? Digital information generally comprises of data created by, or prepared for, electronic systems and devices (computers, screens, communication devices). Examples of digital information include; software, digital images, digital video, video games etc. Question 2 How do we evaluate digital information? Evaluating digital information is an important part of the digital literacy process, to evaluate; 1. Look critically at information to determine relevance, suitability and reliability 2. Be critical and sceptical about sources and information to ensure authenticity 3. Check for accuracy, validity and currency as measures of information quality 4. Make sure all information and resources are fit for purpose Question 3 What is Pinterest? What is Padlet? Pinterest - a visual discovery engine that allows its users to create their own boards featuring 'pins', these pins can be any form of digital media or external link. Padlet - an application to create an online bulletin board that you can use to display information for any topic. You can share, collaborate and work on other various boards with others. Includes features, links, maps, videos, images and other forms of digital media (screenshares and self-recordings) Question 4 What does digital curation mean and why is it useful for teachers? Digital curation is the selection, preservation, maintenance, collection and archiving of digital assets. Digital curators can archive, annotate, appropriate and recirculate online resources easily. Tsubulsky (2020) describes digital curation as a tool to enable
personalised learning, she suggests that asking students to curate their own resources and knowledge from a digital resource encourages cognitive, emotional and significant learning experiences. She also states that the process of curation also fosters a personal knowledge of the subject, which in turn causes them to synthesise understandings, analyse content and prioritise information. Question 5 What types of digital information can we use in the classroom? Well known examples include social media, online games, multimedia and mobile phones. Digital learning is any type of learning that uses technology. It can happen across all curriculum learning areas. Question 6 How do we teach our students to be critical users? 1. Emphasise the importance of critical thinking when using digital information technology 2. Use social media for learning and collaboration 3. Provide guidance on how to avoid plagiarism 4. Teach students to responsibly manage their online identity 5. Help students with strategies to manage online distractions 6. Provide authentic contexts for practice 7. Guide students out of their comfort zone
