Assignment 9 – Multispectral Imagery Q1 (5 points): How many picture elements (i.e., pixels) compose this raster dataset? Q2 (5 points): What is the ground area (in square meters) covered by each pixel in this image, and what is the ground area (in square kilometers) covered by the entire image? Q3 (5 points): How many spectral bands are present in this raster dataset? Q4 (10 points): What spectral regions do each of the spectral bands in this multispectral image represent? Do not provide actual wavelength ranges, but rather state which band (denoted by its number) is in the ‘blue’, the ‘green’ or the ‘red’ spectral regions. (Note: The bands in this dataset only comprise the visible region of the electromagnetic spectrum.) Q5 (5 points): How many picture elements (i.e., pixels) compose this raster dataset? Q6 (5 points): What is the ground area (in square meters) covered by each pixel in this image, and what is the ground area (in square kilometers) covered by the entire image? Q7 (5 points): How many spectral bands are present in this raster dataset? Q8 (10 points): What spectral regions does each of the spectral bands in this dataset comprise? In this case, provide the actual wavelengths. Q9 (10 points): How does the distribution of brightness values in the spectral bands 3 and 4 differ from each other? What do you think causes this variation? Q10 (10 points): What color composite do you think enhances the most the built-up/bare soil areas (and their variability)? Why do you think this happens? Screen-capture this color composite and add it to the MS Word (or PDF) with your answers. Q11 (10 points): What color composite do you think enhances the most the vegetated areas (and their variability)? Why do you think this happens? Screen-capture this color composite and add it to the MS Word (or PDF) with your answers. Q12 (20 points): Identify the Football field (i.e., Kenan Memorial Stadium), Baseball field (Bryson Field), PE Fields (i.e., lacrosse field) (Hooker Fields), and soccer field (Dorrance Field) in the high spatial resolution raster data layer ‘Chapel_Hill_ortho_2017_subs.tif’. Using the Sentinel 2A raster data layer, demonstrate what type of turf grass (either artificial or natural) is present in each of these four fields. Hint : use a band combination to 1
generate a false color composite that allows you to separate between artificial and natural turf grasses. Provide an explanation of why such band combination allows you to separate between artificial and natural vegetation. Screen-capture this color composite (zooming in to the respective fields) and add it to the MS Word (or PDF) with your answers. When you are done, put your answers to Q1-Q12 in a PDF and upload it to Sakai. 2
