Video Discussion: Assistive Technology Assistive Technology is a necessity in providing equal access to students with special needs or disabilities. According to Hughes and Roblyer (2022) assistive technology falls into two categories, assistive technology device and service. Assistive technology device is any device that helps a student to access learning, while an assistive technology service is defined as, “any service that directly assists a child with disability in the selection, acquisition, or use of an assistive technology device,” (Hughes & Roblyer, 2022). In my first-grade class there are 21 students, one gets pulled for special education services for all academics in a resource setting, one has an altered school day to meet their needs, four students receive push in support as outlined in IEPs, two students have 504 plans. Of those students, one utilizes a tablet for communication while also using adaptive tools such as pencil grips and scissors and another student requires the use of a hearing aid. For the student with the hearing aide, I make sure that they are wearing it during all academic instruction because without it, they cannot hear the information. It is important to encourage the use of assistive technology when it is available because it helps students with disabilities to participate in general education (Nordström et al., 2018). This is something that I have noticed in my own classroom, when the student who wears the hearing aid, they are more willing to participate. The student with the tablet does not always need it to communicate as they are able to speak, but it can be challenging to understand them at times and the tablet helps with that. I notice that on occasion this student will shy away from utilizing the technology because of other students and the stigma that comes with needing assistance. For students to be successful in the use of assistive technology, they
require support to be given in order to decrease the stigmatization of it and for the technology use to have longevity (Hughes & Roblyer, 2022).
