Report
Exercise 1: Eddy Covariance data processing (50 points) On the same graph, plot the 4 energy components (net radiation (Rn),Sensible heat flux (H), Ground heat flux (G) and Latent heat flux (LE). What you can observe from this graph? Comment on the the diurnal pattern of each energy component and identify where most of the net radiation energy received is actually used? Rn, H, G, and LE are high during day, and low during nighttime because the radiation is got from the sun. Most of the Rn received is used as latent heat flux used to cause evapotranspiration. Crop coefficient (Kc): Using ET0 and ETa, calculate the daily Kc of alfalfa field for the three days of EC measurements. How does that compare to the recommended Kc published on the CIMIS website: https://cimis.water.ca.gov/Content/PDF/21427 - KcAgronomicGrassandVeg.pdf Averaging non- zero values gives a Kc of 0.54, which is close to the published Kc of 0.4 Use OpenET ( https://openetdata.org/ ) and extract the daily ETa measured using the 6 remote sensing ET models. Compare the ETa measured with eddy covariance station with the ETa estimated from satellite imagery. What model performed better (Compare each day and the total of the 3 days) and what you can conclude from this small exercise? Date Ensemble ET eeMetric ET SSEBop ET SIMS ET PT-JPL ET DisALEXI ET geeSEBAL ET Eta 11/25/21 1.161 1.76 1.408 1.616 0.933 0.785 0.488 1.63 11/26/21 1.055 1.548 1.215 1.399 0.978 0.732 0.507 1.75 11/27/21 0.765 1.088 0.838 0.967 0.795 0.543 0.409 1.64 Total 2.981 4.396 3.461 3.982 2.706 2.06 1.404 5.02 Based on the comparison of ETa measurements, The eeMetric performed better and was closer to the Eta measured with the eddy covariance station. The conclusion is that there is a possibility of significant variability between remote sensing Eta when compared with the one from the eddy covariance station. So, it is better to have a station on site to use as a reference in addition to the remoting sensing ET models.
