Experiment 5: RC Time Constant Student name: Graham Herkenrath Pre-lab section: 1) Introduction: Explain the theory behind this experiment in a paragraph between 150 and 250 words. (2 Points) In this experiment we will be analyzing the voltage, frequency and resistance of capacitors using the RC time constant. The RC time constant explains the charging of a capacitor since the charging process can be described using the exponential function: q=q0(1-e^(- t/RC)). In this equation, q0 represents the maximum charge on the plates and RC can be substituted by t which represents the capacitive time constant. The reason why the capacitor charging process equation is exponential is because the battery becomes harder to charge as more of the plates within the capacitor are charged since more work is required to charge the plates since the other plates already have the same charge. We will be measuring the charge on the capacitor by measuring voltage since they are proportional to one another through the equation q=CV. The equation to measure voltage is: V=V0e^(-t/RC), where RC represents the time it takes for the capacitor to decrease in value and can be substituted with t. 2) Hypothesis: In an If /Then statement, highlight the purpose of the experiment. If the frequency and voltage remains constant the resistance should remain constant while capacitance changes depending on if the connection is parallel or in series. 6) In a paragraph between 100 and 150 words, explain what you Learn. What conclusion can you draw from the results of this lab assignment? (1 point) I learned how a capacitor functions when charging and discharging and how the RC time constant plays a role in a circuit involving a capacitor that is getting charged and discharged. I learned how to measure and calculate resistance and capacitance in series and parallel and how to use those values to find different time constants for different moments of charging and discharging a capacitor. I also learned the importance of voltage when analyzing capacitance and resistance as it is important in various equations. A conclusion I can draw from the results of this lab assignment is that capacitance plays the biggest role when measuring the time constant since the time constant revolves around how long it takes for a capacitor to decrease in value. 7) In one sentence, compare the results of the experiment with your Hypothesis. Why? (0.5 points) My hypothesis did not align with the results of the experiment because the resistance was also affected by either being in series or parallel since resistance in parallel is measured by 1/Rt = 1/R1 + 1/R2 while in series is measured by Rt = R1 + R2. 8) Attach your response to the questions in the lab manual here.
