EET113 DC and AC Instructor: Ziyad Kas Campus: 2.5 Parallel Circuits Student Name: Carly Hribar Honor Pledge: I pledge to support the Honor System of ECPI. I will refrain from any form of academic dishonesty or deception, such as cheating or plagiarism. I am aware that as a member of the academic community, it is my responsibility to turn in all suspected violators of the honor code. I understand that any failure on my part to support the Honor System will be turned over to a Judicial Review Board for determination. I will report to the Judicial Review Board hearing if summoned. 2 A BSTRACT Build a parallel circuit in multisim to verify the validity of KCL and also Verify the current divider rule. I NTRODUCTION Using Multisim I created a parallel circuit with 3 different resistors to verify KCL and also do calculations to measure current throughout the circuit. If calculations match The measured current in multisim, KCL can then be said to be verified. P ROCEDURES Start off by creating a parallel circuit using multisim. Using a 1kΩ, 3.3kΩ, and 10kΩ resistors, a 12V DC power supply, and ground and connector nodes. Connect multimeters to the circuit on each branch to measure the current. After doing so, using the equation 1 R 1 + 1 R 2 + 1 R 3 = 1 RT find the total resistance of the circuit. I then used the equation V R to find the current of each individual branch. Then using I 1 + I 2 + I 3 = IT I found the total current for the circuit which matched my multisim circuit. R ESULTS 1. Measure the voltage across the power supply, V s = 12V
3 2. Measure the current flowing in the circuit, I T = _16.83a____ 3. Measure the current through each resistor. 4. Record the reading of the DMM in Table 1 below T ABLE 1 V OLTAGE DROP ACROSS THE RESISTOR FOR DIFFERENT REFERENCE POINTS Measured Current Calculated Current I 1 12mA 12 I 2 3.63mA 3.63 I 3 1.2mA 1.2 I T 16.83mA 16.83 6. Calculate through circuit analysis and record in Table 1 above: a. I1= 12v/1kΩ b. I2= 12v/3.3kΩ c. I3= 12v/10kΩ 7. Compare measured and calculated currents Both measured and calculated measurements are the same. 8. Verify Kirchhoff’s Current law, KCL. KCL states that the total current flowing into a node must be the total leaving the node. If the total leaving the node is 16.83mA, and the three currents of each individual branch add up to that it verifies KCL. C ONCLUSION In conclusion, I did verify that the total current of a parallel circuit is equal to the sum of the current of each branch as it is stated in KCL. I am also aware that in a parallel circuit, the voltage stays the same across all branches and nodes.
