SU21 1 EGR151 Lab 4 v2 SU21.odt Name: _________________________ Sec. _____ / Night Date: _____________ Lab Partner(s) Names: __ N / A _________________________________________________ Lab #4 Resistor Color Code, Measuring Resistance on a DMM and Use of Ohm’s Law to Calculate Resistance Rationale: In Electronics technology it is necessary to know the color code as well as how to use the DMM to measure resistance. In repair, breadboarding, and in production of the final product circuit, the color code and use of the DMM to measure resistance are an absolute necessity. Objectives: 1. Memorize the EIA (Electronics Industries Association) Color Code. 2. Given various resistors determine their resistance by reading the color code. 3. Verify the values of objective #2 by using the DMM (digital multimeter) as an ohmmeter. 4. Perform calculations using Ohm’s Law. Parts List: (5) Resistors: 10 , 270 , 1K , 39K , & 820K; (1) Two-terminal block Introduction: There are Three (3) methods to determine the value of a resistor. (1) Using the color code , the nominal value of a resistor can be determined by direct inspection. (2) A 2 ND method is to measure the resistance with an ohmmeter . (3) The 3 rd method ,the indirect method, is accomplished by measuring the voltage across and the current thru the resistor, then calculate the resistance using Ohm’s law . (This method is used for internal resistance of devices such as amplifiers & semiconductors where the IV curve may be displaced from the origin.) In measuring the resistance of any device we will encounter three (3) regions; (1) zero resistance or a “short circuit,” (2) infinite resistance or an “open circuit” and (3) values between the two extremes - representing “resistance”. When a technician or engineer performs a “continuity check” with an ohmmeter, he/she is looking for extremes, that is, is the circuit an open or a short? The concept of continuity check is very important in “trouble shooting” electronic equipment. Learning Activities: 1. Read information in this lab. 2. Perform Learning Activities on Pg. 5, Filling in Table #3 3. Answer the questions at the end of this lab.

SU21 5 EGR151 Lab 4 v2 SU21.odt Learning Activities: 1. Enter the color code for each of the resistors shown in the parts list into Table #3. 2. Calculate and then enter the color code max. & min. values using (R Color code value)∙(1 tolerance). Obtain the Instructor’s OK. NOTE: Mount each resistor on a two-terminal block. Do not bend the resistor leads. 3. Using the ohmmeter function of the DMM, measure each resistor and enter its value into Table #3 on the next page. Do not let your fingers touch both sides of resistor leads when taking measurements. The human body has a resistance of at least 15 k , and will affect measurements of high R values. When measuring resistance record only the three most significant digits. Connect to resistor in two- terminal block. Ohms function button

SU21 10 EGR151 Lab 4 v2 SU21.odt LAB 4 Conclusion (20% of lab grade) Use complete sentences in paragraph format. (DO NOT answer each question on a separate line preceded by its number (points will be deducted). Your grade will be based on content, sentence structure, grammar AND spelling. Type your conclusion . Follow the format shown in the syllabus. Handwritten conclusions will lose 50% automatically. Your conclusion should include the following: 1 Summarize the three methods to determine the value of a resistor. 2 Which method would be the most accurate method and why? 3 Add anything else you feel is relevant.
