Unit 3 Assignment Morgan Romba Purdue University Global CS204 Prof. Laurie Hansen June 27, 2023
Part 1 Which set of slides did you choose to view? How does this set of slides relate to your own career? When going through the slides that were provided for the Unit 3 assignment, I chose business professional. I chose the business professional slides due to what healthcare administrators do on a day-to-day basis. Management positions at hospitals, nursing homes, insurance firms, and doctors’ offices fall under the heading of healthcare administration. Healthcare managers work in these environments and are responsible for a variety of tasks that involve daily operations, finance, leadership, and policies in the facility (Maddocks, 2022). Were the individuals professional? What made the individuals professional (consider attire, non-verbal communication skills, presentation of self, and identify and describe specific things in the slides that made the individuals professional)? I believe overall that the individuals were professional in each slide. On the first slide, everyone is well-dressed and has a neat appearance. The women are wearing blouses and the gentlemen are wearing ties and suit jackets. Even though not everyone is smiling fully, a few of them still seem approachable. The second slide has individuals who are similarly dressed and have a neat appearance. On this slide it shows them communicating and four of the five individuals seem to be giving the speaking their full attention. The third slide appears to be a
more easygoing environment. Even though they are more business casual, they are also well- dressed and have an overall neat appearance. After reviewing the slides, list and explain specific areas that would be unprofessional on the slides as well as in your field when considering attire, non-verbal communication skills, and presentation of self. After reviewing all the slides, I did find some things that I would consider unprofessional. In the first slide, everyone in the picture has their arms crossed. Standing with their arms crossed gives the appearance that they are not as approachable as those who do not have their arms crossed. On the second slide, there is an individual on the bottom left side who is not giving their attention to the person who is speaking and going over a document. To me, this appears unprofessional because this appears to be a group meeting and they are focused elsewhere. On the third slide, two individuals do not appear to be approachable by the look on their faces. Also, one individual is sitting on top of the desk and that is not something you would expect to see in a professional setting. Include any additional thoughts focused on professionalism based on what you viewed on the slides. When looking at slide one where everyone has their arms crossed the individuals who are smiling are giving off much different non-verbal cues. As an employee I would feel most comfortable approaching the woman in the middle and the one on the far right. Even though the other three do not appear angry the look on their faces feels critical. The second slide shows how people can work together in a close environment and still maintain personal space. This ensures

that those working in the group do not feel uncomfortable. The third slide also displays individuals who are not standing in a hostile way, but their faces are not welcoming. The three slides show that it is important to be aware of how you present yourself and the faces you make. Part 2 Describe the appropriate attire for an individual in your profession. Provide specific examples of appropriate attire. Note: you may want to research this by talking to those in your profession or researching appropriate attire for your profession as this may differ from what you viewed in the presentation. In addition, review the Credibility Robbers information from the Unit 2 Learning Activities. What healthcare administrators wear to work will depend upon the facility and their dress code. Generally, healthcare administrators dress more business casual which for women would be pants, skirts, a blouse, and dresses (Northwest Career College, 2021). I was unable to find dress code standards for a local facility, but I was able to locate one from another medical center. The dress code standards provided by this facility discuss using light or no perfume, keeping makeup tasteful, maintaining fingernails, and keeping them at an appropriate length. This facility’s document also mentions wearing appropriate footwear, keeping jewelry minimal, and keeping hair neat and clean (Sierra View Medical Center, n.d). From my personal experience at doctors’ offices and hospitals, this appears to be a standard dress code expectation. Describe and analyze what makes someone a professional in your field. Use research to support your ideas for this paragraph.
Communication, being ethical, and problem solving are all important skills for a healthcare administrator to have as a professional. Communication is one of the most important skills in any field. It is important for healthcare administrators to communicate in a coherent way since this is something that they do frequently. Healthcare managers should be explicit and clear about their requirements while communicating, whether it be by phone, email, or in person. As a result, administrators should be conscious of both their words and their delivery (Slyter, 2019). Healthcare administrators are responsible for ensuring that ethical principles are practiced within their facility. Those in charge of healthcare administration create a morally upright society. Doctors and other practitioners can benefit from suggestions from healthcare administrators to help them make the best decisions (William Woods University, 2021). Administrators in the healthcare field must have strong problem-solving abilities because emergencies are likely to happen. It may be a medical emergency, a health issue, or a workplace quarrel. These circumstances necessitate rapid thinking, innovative solutions, and trust in oneself (Slyter, 2019). With these three traits combined, a healthcare administrator would be very professional. Explain the behavioral attributes you practice that identify you as a professional (review Units 1–3 for information). Behavioral attributes that I practice that identify me as a professional are my organizational skills, communication, and being reliable. When I took over the role of Claims Supervisor at Walmart, I had quite a mess to clean and organize. Not long after I was put into that role, I was able to get my office to company standards and provided detailed instructions for my associates daily. Any information that we did not need daily was kept in a binder so not only
my associates could access it, but any associate also who needed to perform the task could use it as well. While I am still improving my communication skills with the help of this class, I can communicate clearly and professionally with my coworkers and managers. I frequently sent emails to our market team regarding tasks or issues that we faced. I also oversaw teaching and training new associates in certain safety processes that they needed for their everyday tasks at work as well as correcting errors. Finally, I am a reliable individual in my personal and professional life. I am on time for work, I do not leave early, and I am there when my managers need help. I am often given important tasks that are time sensitive due to my ability to get things done on time. What aspects, such as attire, non-verbal communication skills, and presentation of self, do you possess that make you professional? How do these aspects relate specifically to your field? When it comes to attire, I follow the dress code that is given to me by human resources. I go to work clean, with my hair neat, clothes without stains or rips, and I do not wear an abundance of perfume. I think when working with people that it is important to care about how you look and smell. People can see that I respect not only myself but also the company I work for when I take care of myself. Non-verbal skills that I possess are my ability to listen, stand in a way that does not feel off-putting, and make eye contact with someone when they are speaking to me. This is important when someone comes to you with an issue to show that they have your complete attention.
