2 Unit 9 Assignment Portfolio Introduction Explain who you are and your chosen professional field. My name is Morgan Romba and the professional field that I have chosen is healthcare administrator. Healthcare administrators play an important role in their facility. Even though they may not always interact with patients they are helping by supporting those who are. Healthcare administrators are well-versed in the laws and rules governing the treatment of patients. They have duties that are quite unlike those of a doctor or physician. Healthcare administrators are in charge of the institution itself, while clinicians supervise patients in- person (WGU, n.d). Healthcare administrators may be in charge of keeping track of patient data and making sure they receive the best possible treatment. They may also be a member of the group that compiles medical records for analysis and research to find any gaps or barriers to providing high-quality treatment. This position may even assist in ensuring that the hospital has enough medical personnel to handle the rising demand for treatment (Saint Joseph’s College of Maine, n.d). Include an overview of how you perceive yourself professionally. When I think about myself professionally, the first thing that comes to mind is hard working. When I am given a task, I put my all into it to ensure that is not only done well, but also done
3 on time. This could mean that I must arrive at work early or stay later to ensure that my task is completed in a way that I could consider satisfactory. When I have a task at hand, I set goals and expectations for myself, and I strive to meet those goals and expectations. I would also describe myself as an honest and ethical person. Sometimes doing the right things is not always easy, but it is important to do. I not only prove that with the things that I say but the things that I do as well, and I make sure that those two are always the same. But I also know when to admit I am wrong and hold myself accountable. While we may want to think we are always right, I think that someone who is honest can admit their mistakes and improve upon them. With those mistakes I can learn how to not only be a better employee or leader, but I can learn how to be a better person as well. Finally, I think that I appear to look professional in the eyes of others. I follow the dress code and I go to work neat and clean. I do not go in wearing torn jeans, stained shirts, and holey shoes. I make sure that my hair is done daily and that I am free from overpowering smells such as too much perfume. I also make sure that I greet everyone with a friendly smile and hello, which can also have an impact on professional appearance (Philobos, 2022). Lifelong professionalism and how you will maintain your image. Include an overview of how you will focus on continuing to maintain your professional image in the future of the career you have chosen to pursue. Even though I could already be employed, posting something compromising would make it difficult for the company to keep me there without damaging their own image. Situations like that could lead me to unemployment and could possibly make it hard for me to find future employment. Posting photos of myself out at a bar may seem harmless, but it could give my employer or future employer the impression that I am reckless and may not be dependable (SiteProNews, 2021). Another way that I plan to maintain my professional image is to ask for feedback from my leaders. While many of us think that we are doing our job excellently, asking for feedback from managers can help us improve in areas we may not realize. Finally, staying involved in my career can help me maintain my professional image. That means learning new skills, taking the training opportunities the company provides and sharing the skills and information with those around me (Engineering Management Institute, 2011). Short-term goals Write 2–3 short-term goals written as a SMART Statement, a plan to meet your goal, and your rationale. Goal Statement 1 : I will continue to improve my public speaking. Plan : I will find a public speaking coaching near my area and set up an appointment before
5 graduation. Rationale : Public speaking is not something that I have ever excelled at. Often when I am in front of a large group of people I freeze up. Becoming proficient at public speaking can help me further my career. It can do this by making me more comfortable during interviews. Instead of sitting there going “um” and “ahh” or even going still, I can think of answers to the questions asked. It can also help me articulate myself better, allowing me to get my information across in a logical manner for those interviewing me. It could also help me convince someone that I am the best candidate for the position (University of the People, n.d). Not only can public speaking help me in my professional life, but it also can help me with my personal life as well. Being able to do well at public speaking could boost confidence as well as improving communication skills. While these are personal goals, they can also help my professional life as well. Being able to communicate well in both personal and professional life can help to create many opportunities (University of the People, n.d). Goal Statement 2: I will pursue higher education so I can stay proficient in the industry within 6 months of graduation. Plan: I am going to investigate certification programs that I can use alongside my degree that I am obtaining from Purdue to stay well informed and skilled.
6 Rationale: Healthcare administration professionals frequently pursue certifications to highlight their essential competencies. Even though all corporations may not find them necessary, they help people in the industry who have formal education in healthcare administration in advancing their careers. Healthcare administrator is a job that is constantly growing and with more people applying for these positions, a certificate can help them stand out. By displaying their knowledge and abilities and setting oneself apart from other experts, certified individuals may highlight their skill set. When looking for new work prospects or hoping to get promoted at their existing employer, this is extremely important (Public health degrees, n.d). Additionally, healthcare administrators may be able to improve their expertise through the process of studying for certification tests. They can also brush up on information they may have studied while obtaining their degree (Public health degrees, n.d). Individuals are often taught a lot of information while obtaining their degree but may not use all of it frequently. Going through the certification program can allow for them to use the information they learned but may not have used since graduation. Goal Statement 3: I am going to decide what career path I want to follow with my degree. Plan: I am going to investigate jobs that utilize my degree and do more research regarding

7 them before I graduate. Rationale: There are many different corporations that a healthcare administrator can utilize their degree at, but not everyone is cut out for every option. There may be career opportunities with companies that do not align with my ethical values and beliefs. If I cannot stand behind their ethics and values, I may not be happy working for their company. While having a job is important, but being happy where you are can make a world of difference between a job and a career (Le, 2022). Another reason this is important is to ensure that I have the proper education for the career that interests me. If I find a job that I am interested in, I need to know if I could possibly work there after graduation or if I would need to pursue higher education or a certification. I could also decide that healthcare administration may not be the best career for me and see what my next steps would need to be for me to succeed (Le, n.d). I just want to be passionate about what I do and what path I chose to follow. Long-term goals (2 paragraphs per goal) Write 2–3 long-term goals written as a SMART Statement, a plan to meet your goal, and your rationale. Goal Statement 1 : I want to build my professional network.
8 Plan: I am going to utilize LinkedIn to improve my professional networking. Rationale: By using LinkedIn, I can present myself as a competent and knowledgeable individual who can connect with people who are the same. This can be beneficial for meeting people who have knowledge or companies who are looking for those with knowledge. By utilizing the resources available I can reach a bigger group of people with the same experience or greater. This could be people who work at the same company outside the facility or knowledgeable CEOs from some of the top companies (Herling, 2022). LinkedIn is also a great resource for finding a job or an internship. Recruiters and other members of human resources use this website to find individuals who they consider to be great candidates for these positions they are looking to fill. This is something that I can use to help me once I graduate and throughout my professional future. While I hope that the first company is going to be everything I hope for, I know that it may not be the case. In the chance that I do not enjoy where I am at, I can keep my profile updated and showcase how I am a great candidate (Perry, 2021). Goal Statement 2: I am going to find my dream job in my field. Plan: I am going to find the job that is the best fit for me and brings me the most joy and sense
9 of fulfillment. Rationale: At this very moment I am not entirely happy with my job, and this is part of the reason I chose to go back to school. I have spent the last 10 years working for the same company and I can honestly say that this is not my dream job. Currently I am working in retail, but I know that healthcare administration is what I want to do. Right now, I think that I want to work for one of our local hospitals and move up the corporate ladder. When you work your dream job, you do not dread going into work. It can inspire you to do better and to be better. Even though I can make a difference where I am now, I know that if I were doing what I love that I would make a greater impact. Being at your dream job doesn’t drain you the way being at a job that you don’t love does. This allows you to have more energy outside of work as well while at work (Garfinkle, n.d). Goal Statement 3 : I want to obtain a leadership position. Plan: I am going to work hard in my career and enter a leadership role. Rationale : Throughout my career with Walmart, I have spent more time in a leadership role than not. I work hard to make connections with not only my supervisors, but the associates around me as well. I have a firm understanding of where my strengths are as a leader and the weaknesses that I need to improve upon. I will also focus on seeking out a mentor in my facility so I can have someone help guide me professionally (Indeed, 2022).

10 A reason for me wanting to be a leader is because I enjoy teaching, training, and mentoring those who I oversee. Being able to show my team ways to excel at their position is something I take pride in. I like getting things done that will help improve the company or facility and improve the workload for associates (Indeed, 2022). Also, all my supervisor experience has given me the ability to talk to coworkers in a professional manner but also customers or vendors. Education Plan Identify at least 3 ways that you can maintain your knowledge throughout your career. Explain why each way would be important to your career. One of the most crucial methods to perform your job successfully and keep up with the shifting needs of the workplace is to keep your skills up to date. Additionally, it might aid in your preparation for potential opportunities for employment (Harlow, n.d). Staying knowledgeable in your career is important and there are many ways to do so. This can be done by engaging with your employer, setting professional goals, or joining a professional association in your field. Engaging with your employer is a great way to ensure that your skills are kept up to date. If your employer offers employment training, you can request to be included in the next training exercise available. If there are online resources available through your employer, requesting access to those provides you an opportunity to learn more about what is happening in your
11 professional field. Some employers also offer to help pay for pursuing higher education. This could include a new degree or a certification program (University of Denver, 2023). Another great way to stay knowledgeable is to set professional goals for yourself. If you set goals for yourself, you are less likely to become complacent. A person with goals is more likely to continue to better themselves so they can reach those goals. As you see yourself hitting milestones professionally, it can inspire you to continue to learn so you continue hitting those goals (University of Denver, 2023). Finally, a great way to maintain knowledge throughout your career is to join a professional association in your field. Joining a professional association offers the opportunities to network with individuals in your field. This provides the opportunity to learn from those who may be more knowledgeable than you are. Professional associations can also offer learning opportunities to help make yourself more knowledgeable. This advancement could be through webinars, in person seminars, or certifications. These associations often have legislative and industry updates to keep you well informed (OAAPN, 2021). Budgeting Plan Provide an explanation of the Budget Plan which covers future education and career marketability needs. As of right now, I can honestly say that I am not the best at budgeting. I am more of an impulsive shopper and that is an issue. Thrifting is something that I love to do, and it is an
12 experience that I get to share with my husband and my long-term friend. With that being said, I need to lay out all of our household expenses and our total income. With that information I can see what money we have coming in and where our money is going to. Once we have that figured out, we can see how much money is left over and sort it out for our savings and then our wants (Roth, 2012). Making sure that my education and marketability needs are covered is very important. I will have to look more into different professional associations for healthcare administrators. After the research we did I know there are ones that offer seminars and sometimes discounts on higher education or certifications. The cost of joining a professional association offers the opportunity to save money in the long run. Also, some professional associations also have the option to find new careers. By finding a new career with new certifications, there is a possibility that you could earn a higher salary. Earning a higher salary gives you the capability to invest more into yourself professionally. This would make it easier to attend conferences, attend seminars, and pursue certifications to make yourself more marketable (Hazelwood, 2020).
