DNS Service Corey Adams, Bobby Bray, Tyler Guinard
Identify some use cases when a caching-only DNS server should be used and why this would be the best choice for the use case. A DNS server that solely caches data decreases outgoing DNS traffic and improves name resolution. It takes client queries, executes them against other name servers, caches the results, and sends them back to the client. Outgoing DNS traffic is reduced, and name resolution is accelerated. The DNS cache exists to speed up the DNS lookup process that converts a domain name to an IP address, so it's a good idea to use it. Caching-only DNS servers can improve security for your organization when used as forwarders that are under your administrative control. However, if DNS caching is not correctly handled, it can jeopardize webpage access and network security.
Identify some use cases for a DNS server to be configured as a forwarder and why this would be the best configuration for the use case. If you have only one DNS Server then you should configure it as a forwarder. You'll want to do this to protect yourself from redundancy even if you have multiple DNS Servers. Whenever a DNS server receives a query and resolves it using forwarders (as with Root Hints), it caches the results it sent back to the client. This decreases the Internet traffic over the network and improves the response time for DNS clients.

Identify some use cases when a DNS server should be configured as an Active Directory Active directory can be used a hierarchal system for businesses to give permissions to certain clients or employees permissions to different resources. One example would be a Sales Department employee only having accesses to the files they need. Your active directory can be set at different levels. Starting at root, going into domain and other organizational units.
Group Summaries Group 2 : Bradly - cases for a forwarder if you have one it should be a forwarder if you have multiple you should still have one Yanyi – conditional forwarder configures the DNS server to forward a query it receives to a DNS server depending on the DNS name contained Viviani – ipconfig /flushdns will clear any ip addresses or other DNS records from your cache. dig "interrogates" the DNSname servers as it performs the dns looks and displays the answers that are returned from the queried name server Group 3 : caching only DNS should be used to avoid having to take performance hit, access to the entire range of public DNS data; DNS server configured as AD integrated zone primarily to become more efficient in resolving issues Group 4 : conditional forwarder does not participate in zone transfers; command line tools such as nslookup used to perform DNS and reverse DNS searches and troubleshoot DNS issues; ipconfig /flushdns used to flush DNS cache from system; ipconfig /registerdns used to create and/or update the hostname or A/AAAA records.
