The lab took me a while to complete. It was not hard but it was a lot of information for me to recall from lessons we completed. After some trial and error, I finished. It is really helpful to me that we are allowed to make mistakes in our labs and still fix what we did wrong. I had a class last semester where if you chose one wrong option you would have to restart the whole lab for another shot at getting 100%. I learn a lot better by getting to do things this way. (http Ilma Salman (https://learn.maricopa.edu/courses/1310100/users/4334616) Nov 11, 2023 I agree, the labsim TestOut simulations are easy to fix and they disable unneeded simulations, making the lab easier. Here is a link to a youtuber's channel that shows how to do the lab, step by step. I have found her videos relevant and helpful. https://www.youtube.com/@bre8841

I think of these courses as a the time to make mistakes and learn from them instead of trying to get a perfect score at all times. (http Eric Gaye (https://learn.maricopa.edu/courses/1310100/users/4167354) Nov 19, 2023 Hey Jenna, I had the same experience as well. The lab was not difficult at all, but it took a while to complete. I think the option to fix things when we get it wrong help us learn. Most time when it’s only one attempt people tend to be scared and end up getting things wrong or not passing. I think labs were really helpful. (https:// Micah Galvan (https://learn.maricopa.edu/courses/1310100/users/3941514) Nov 10, 2023 Edited by Micah Galvan (https://learn.maricopa.edu/courses/1310100/users/3941514) on Nov 10 at 11:43am This exercise is going well. The multiple choice was easy because it gives you answers and you have to decide which one's the right answer. But when it comes to the lab portion, it takes a while to figure out the solution because you have to watch the videos and do the lab portions; even if you make a mistake or screw up something in the lab you can always restart and try again, but you have to get a 100% in the lab portions. It just takes time to remember the process, so that way you know what you're supposed to do when it comes to solving the lab portions. (http Jenna Holbura (https://learn.maricopa.edu/courses/1310100/users/4209453) Nov 17, 2023 Hello Micah, I feel the same way that the labs are going well. I am glad multiple-choice questions are easy for you. I remember spending a lot of time in middle school practicing how to be good at multiple-choice questions. We read a lot of articles similar to this one; How to take multiple choice tests (https://education.macleans.ca/study-tips/how-to- ace-multiple-choice-tests/) .

I do think doing the questions multiple times while logging in through TestOut would be helpful in getting the answers at our fingertips, I don't know if it will affect the scores we already have though. The labs, although a bit more challenging than the quizzes, are much more enjoyable due to the virtual hands-on experience they provide. (http Jesse Aguirre Delgado ( He/Him ) (https://learn.maricopa.edu/courses/1310100/users/4052073) Nov 13, 2023 Hi Ilma, the quizzes surely are easy to get through. While the labs can be quite a bit more lucrative, they surely help with our understanding of the course content. I liked that you said they are much more enjoyable as we get some hands-on experience, which undoubtedly helps as we are in this virtual environment. I like doing the labs as we get to put our knowledge to the test, and even if we don't get it right the first time, we can redo them again to see where our thought process went in a different direction. Something I enjoy about the TestOut platform is the ability to download notes and video transcripts. I find this useful as I am going through the modules, and I need to go back to look at something; I can pull up the notes and find what I need. This also helps me with the labs, as it can be challenging to try and remember what each program does, so using the notes helps me find the program I need to use to perform specific tasks. Great post! - Jesse (http Micah Galvan (https://learn.maricopa.edu/courses/1310100/users/3941514) Nov 13, 2023 Hi Ilma, I absolutely agree with your response. Multiple choices are simple to answer because it gives you answers and you have to think which one is right and which one is wrong. But when it comes to labs, (https://www.youtube.com/@bre8841) it can be a challenging, depending on how long it takes to solve. If you get a stuck on anything, during the lab, just go to Bre's YouTube videos on the link and she can show you how you do it the right way. There have been a few though where I sometimes do not know what to do next so they can be frustrating. But a great way to figure it out is to just refer back to the lessons. (https:// Jesse Aguirre Delgado ( He/Him ) (https://learn.maricopa.edu/courses/1310100/users/4052073) Nov 13, 2023 This week's capstone exercise went very well for me. The lab was relatively easy to complete, but I did have to go back and forth between the directions and the lab to ensure I had not skipped over a step. I find it helpful to paste the directions into a Word document so I can format it as a checklist instead, which helps me see what I still need to do. In terms of the content in the lab, it was pretty simple tasks and nothing too tricky. I did get lost every now and then when trying to find a menu, but after some digging around the operating system, I was able to find what I was looking for. It takes time to complete, but it is easy to get by. (http Cesar Chavez-Murataya (https://learn.maricopa.edu/courses/1310100/users/3814769) Nov 15, 2023 This is a nice trick. I often get confused when separating the instructions. Often the instructions are pretty straight forward, but in labs like today it must be helpful to resource to this tools. (http Ashley Endriss (https://learn.maricopa.edu/courses/1310100/users/3254961) Nov 16, 2023 Edited by Ashley Endriss (https://learn.maricopa.edu/courses/1310100/users/3254961) on Nov 17 at 7:44pm Hey Jesse. Your approach to converting the directions into a checklist in Word is a smart move; visualizing the steps helps ensure nothing gets missed. I think it would have saved me a redo in passed labs if they were laid out that way. In my experience, often IT tasks are not specific checklist items, so I guess they are closer to the real-world chaos. It's always good to develop skills or leverage tools that help boost efficiency! Rather than always aiming for a flawless score, I see these courses as an opportunity to learn from mistakes. Then I realize what was my mistake and correct it from there. (http Rannie Brown II ( He/Him ) (https://learn.maricopa.edu/courses/1310100/users/3818993) Nov 20, 2023 i never that to do that paste in Word im do that for now on trying to navigate the lab and instructions and notes definitely using this in the near future (https:// Cesar Chavez-Murataya (https://learn.maricopa.edu/courses/1310100/users/3814769) Nov 15, 2023 I think this week was challenging in many ways. I often open multiple tabs when completing different labs to reference information from previous work, but today I had to return to at least ten different videos and labs to complete the work. I think that working in more complex labs makes it more realistic and unlike the normal work where the problem is specific and I need to target it from a single perspective, I had to resource to different topics to complete it. I hope to have more work like this in the future and obtain substantial experience through my education. (https:// Pablo (https://learn.maricopa.edu/courses/1310100/users/3862009) Nov 15, 2023 This capstone exercise was not to difficult, I required a small review for one portion of the task. The one thing that I really like about test out is that it does not let you access everything. While it does not outright telling you what to do and still makes you think about what we covered in the lesson, it keeps you away from going down the wrong path. Also having the task on the side of the lab already point you in the right direction of what to look for which makes the task less challenging. I found the lab process of putting together the computer more difficult than this lab. (http Alejandra Gonzalez (https://learn.maricopa.edu/courses/1310100/users/3937420) Nov 19, 2023 When separating the instructions, I frequently get lost. The instructions are usually fairly simple, but in modern labs, it must be useful to have access to these tools that are there to help you along the way. (https:// Ashley Endriss (https://learn.maricopa.edu/courses/1310100/users/3254961) Nov 16, 2023 This capstone was fairly simple to figure out, as it was a collection of tasks we have already completed in other labs. Since there are several ways to access many of these menus, I find that often the thing that takes the longest for me in the previous lab is figuring out what method they have configured in the simulation as my path forward. The path shown in the demonstration videos are not always the paths simulated in the following labs. Since I have already worked through those 'features' I wasn't delayed by any of those in the capstone. I am finding it useful at this point to be learning configuration and settings that are useful to me in my current position also. Items like 'always run as admin' are helpful in saving steps for tools that will always require elevated access. (http Cesar Chavez-Murataya (https://learn.maricopa.edu/courses/1310100/users/3814769) Nov 19, 2023 I agree. Although there is times where I can’t find the solution through the lectures and I resource to looking up information in the internet . I love certain websites like Quizlet that offer an explanation to basic concepts that I might’ve not fully comprehend. This is one example: https://quizlet.com/23529903/bpc170-flash-cards/ (https://quizlet.com/23529903/bpc170-flash-cards/) (https:// Joseph Chavez-pineda (https://learn.maricopa.edu/courses/1310100/users/4301827)

It required some review, but the design of TestOut effectively guided me in the right direction. The tasks were clearly outlined, which made them less daunting. When I encountered confusion or found myself stuck, I found it incredibly helpful to refer back to previous labs. This allowed me to revisit the concepts and techniques that were applicable to the current task, providing me with the necessary guidance to move forward. Despite these occasional challenges, I successfully completed the task, reinforcing my understanding of the material. This exercise was a great testament to the knowledge and skills I’ve gained from the course. (http Em Heath ( She/Her ) (https://learn.maricopa.edu/courses/1310100/users/4157171) Nov 19, 2023 Out of all of the material, the labs TestOut offers are my favorite, it allows students to physically do the tasks explained in the texts and videos. It's such an effective tool for familiarizing students with IT concepts. The skills taught in this course, particularly this lab, are beneficial for a plethora of career fields and in personal life. (https:// Don Lowery (https://learn.maricopa.edu/courses/1310100/users/4277489) Nov 17, 2023 I enjoyed this exercise. The lab went well and didn't take particularly long to do. I would enjoy more complex labs like this the process of during the work is good repetition. I thought having to click Advanced settings or certain context options was a bit difficult and required some finessing but I managed to get it done in the end. Thanks for sharing! (https:// Alejandra Gonzalez (https://learn.maricopa.edu/courses/1310100/users/3937420) Nov 19, 2023 I enjoy doing the lab portion more cause it can be challenging and sometimes I have trouble at first but when I review everything and after I'm able to finish through it easier than when I started. Completing the multiple-choice tests is not too difficult, especially after reviewing the course material. Even though I'm not sure if it will have an impact on our current scores, I do believe that answering the questions more than once while logging in through TestOut would be beneficial in having the answers at our fingertips. Because they offer a virtual hands-on experience, the labs are much more enjoyable even though they are slightly more difficult than the quizzes. (http Joseph Chavez-pineda (https://learn.maricopa.edu/courses/1310100/users/4301827) Nov 19, 2023 Hi Alejandra, I completely agree with your perspective on the lab portions. They indeed provide a more hands-on experience and can be pretty challenging, but that’s where the real learning happens. It’s like the saying goes, “The more you sweat in practice, the less you bleed in battle.” I also appreciate your point about the multiple-choice tests. They can be an excellent tool for reinforcing the material we’ve learned. And you’re right; having the opportunity to answer the questions more than once could benefit retention. Additionally, I’d like to share a resource that has been invaluable to me. I refer to IT Resources and Assistance (https://www.youtube.com/@IT.Resources.Assistance/videos) whenever I have lab trouble. Their straightforward and concise guides have been great in helping me navigate and complete the labs successfully. But Remote access and encryption can get a lot deeper than performed in the exercise. I will say that being reminded of the Local Security Policy structure is always a good thing to go back to. (http Jason Beech (https://learn.maricopa.edu/courses/1310100/users/3914113) Nov 19, 2023 Yes I agree with you that it's always a good thing to go back to the local security policy. Its a good habit to have for keeping your devices secure. I took a moment to look up some other good habits to have in terms of security and found this article: https://www.titanfile.com/blog/cyber-security-tips-best-practices/ (https:// Zachery Butte (https://learn.maricopa.edu/courses/1310100/users/4402149) Nov 19, 2023 My experience with this week's exercises went well; I did not have too much trouble. Although it did take me a quick minute to remember that you can disable the startup applications through the task manager, I have become so used to searching for "startup apps" through Windows search or by going to settings, apps, and then startup to disable or enable any startup apps. It was a great reminder that there was a faster and easier way to disable and enable startup applications. (http Eric Gaye (https://learn.maricopa.edu/courses/1310100/users/4167354) Nov 19, 2023 Hi Zachery, My experience was good as well. I did not have many problems. I only encountered 1 that took me a few minutes to figure out. I also understand what you mean with the startup apps. I also keep in my mind of any easier way possible. It took me a few minutes to remember about the various system applications we can use like computer management and local security policy. I like that when we do something wrong, the lab gives instructions so we can understand what we did or didn't do. I had to use them in this lab and they helped me learn what I did wrong. (http Zachery Butte (https://learn.maricopa.edu/courses/1310100/users/4402149) Nov 19, 2023 Hey Jason, I had a similar experience with the local security policy section of the lab. I was originally looking under computer management for some of the security options and had to backtrack and think through some of the other options we have learned throughout the course. You are spot on about the labs giving us an in-depth explanation of what we did wrong. I felt like the lab explanations have helped me a lot in understanding what I did wrong and what I can do correctly. I found this article (https://www.guidingtech.com/how-to-open-local-security-policy-in-windows/) that helped me learn a few more different ways to access local security policy. It might be of interest to you since we had a similar problem trying to remember a few of the different system tools we can use in Windows. (https:// Mads Balk (https://learn.maricopa.edu/courses/1310100/users/3854119) Nov 19, 2023 I thought this week's assignment went well. I don't have any experience with configuring a new Windows system usually but I was able to follow the instructions and set up the system pretty easily. It was a lot of steps so it was kinda difficult to follow but I got it done in the end. I was grateful for this lab in the end and will apply what I learned here to set up a new system if I ever need to in the future! For example, the management of password rules may fall under a human resource role rather than an IT role. The management of files and controlling access to them is a skill (https://www.nextlabs.com/blog-the-importance-of-file-security-explained/) that is important to know regardless of one’s career path. (https:// Eric Gaye (https://learn.maricopa.edu/courses/1310100/users/4167354) Nov 19, 2023 This week exercise went well. It was very easy to get through. Some problems that I encountered were accessing it on my Mac computer as well as getting stuck during the steps. At first it was not working. But I ended up using my Hp. I got stuck on one activity . This was the hardest part. But I was able to complete it. It was similar to all the activities that we have done. One thing I like is that we can fix our mistakes as we complete the tasks. I always focus on completing all labs correctly so I read the steps coupon times. (http Jesse Aguirre Delgado ( He/Him ) (https://learn.maricopa.edu/courses/1310100/users/4052073) Nov 19, 2023 Hi Eric, I understand the frustration that can come when trying to access TestOut material on a Mac computer. I've run into issues where sometimes the labs don't fully load, or it doesn't display the entire lab on the screen, which is pretty bothersome at times. I ran into similar issues with some of the labs in BPC170, and I found a TestOut support forum (https://support.testout.com/hc/en-us/articles/227483268-Right-Click-on-a-Mac-not-working- in-labs-other-Mac-tips) that really helped me figure out the right keys to use with the Mac keyboard. In recent weeks, the issues with labs not fully being displayed on my Mac screen, I was able to quickly resolve by just entering the browser in full-screen mode. I also enjoy that we can see where we went wrong and can try again. Definitely makes it less stressful to complete.
