Zachary Trotter    COURSE PROJECT Zachary Trotter
ZACHARY TROTTER 1 Course Project Zachary Trotter 4/23/2023 CIS 101 Computer Purpose : o For my computer, I will use the PC I have already built for the standard. Mainly my PC is used for gaming, but I also use it for many side projects which include programming and 3D modeling. Operating System : o For operating systems I’ll go with windows 10 as it is what I am most familiar with. I’ve also found that many programs such as Autodesk and some older laser engraving software I use tend to run better on windows ten as some of the equipment I use it older, and they have yet to update the software to be compatible with windows 11. CPU : o For the CPU I’ve chosen the Intel Core i5-13600K. I am currently running the Core i5-9600k. I have always had good luck with intel and tend to be loyal to the brand. The 13600k has 14 cores, 20 threads @ 3.5GHz and a raptor lake chip set and was released in 2022. The cad software I use tend to bog down my current CPU since I am using multiple programs while I’m using it. Since the 13600 has 14 core this will allow my PC to multitask much easier. While there are better CPU’s for gaming the 13600 is comparable to the AMD Ryzen 5 7600x, but the extra cores allow it to handle the workload of designing as well so for me it a good in between to meet all my needs while not excelling in either. The 13600 is also priced very well at 309 from micro center which will allow for more money to be put into a GPU. Cooling System :
ZACHARY TROTTER 2 o While normally I just run a heat sink and fans the CPU, I’ve chosen runs much hotter due to its power consumption so I will choose to go with a liquid cooled system. Arctic has a product call the arctic liquid freezer, which as two 120mm fans that run at a max of 1800RPM. This will provide the maximum cooling needed for a CPU that tends to run on the warmer side than anything I have run previously. Motherboard : o For a motherboard I have chosen the Gigabyte z790 AORUS ELITE as it offers the best environment for the CPU. The board supports 128GB for DDR55 ram along with 6 PCIE slots. The board also supports 10 USB ports ranging from type C to 2.0. the board also supports up to 4 M.2 Memory cards which is great because since moving to a single M.2 my current PC as run much faster it will be nice to be able to do away with all my old disk hard drives. RAM : o For ram I’ve chosen to go with the Corsair Vengeance RGB 32GB x2 this will provide me with 64GB of ram in total. The frequency this ram runs at is 6000MHz it is capable of this when utilizing the XMP 3.0 function on the motherboard. While the board and the CPU both support 128GB of ram I find this to be a bit over kill for my purposes I run 32GB of ram currently have rarely use all of it so I think half will do just fine for my purposes. Running at around 99.99 per stick the price is a huge selling point. I’m also a tend to stick to brands I’ve had good luck with, and Samsung is usually known for making a good product along with a 5 year warranty. Also, from reviews they tend to run cooler than comparable M.2’s which would help off set the CPU I’ve chosen that tend to run hot. Graphics Card : o I’ve have just recently updated my Graphics card to the Nvidia RTX 3060-TI From the Nvidia RTX 1060 last year. I needed more performance to run newer 4k games. With 8GB of memory and 4864 cores with 1 HDMI 2.1 sold and 3 Display ports attached. I chose a card with so many display ports because normally I run two monitors at all times but during projects at time I run 3 or 4 depending on what I’m doing and if it needs its own screen or not. At the time of the purchase the 3060-ti was the best bang for your buck the 40 series had just been released so prices had dropped so I picked it up for about 500 dollars. Now if price was not a factor I would go with the 4090 hands
ZACHARY TROTTER 4 down. in bench mark test the 4090 blows my card out of the water with the benchmarking coming it at 370% above average the 4090 is the top of the leader boards on user benchmark but at a price of 1600 dollars it’s a bit to steep for the games I play and the projects I work on. The 3060 will carry me for the next several years before it proves obsolete the 1060 lasted 5 if I can get that much off this card I’ll be content with that. References : o Tom’s Hardware . (2019). What initially drew me in with this case was the tempers glass side I like to be able to look at my motherboard when everything is up and running. It’s also a mid-tower which allows it to sit on top of a desk and not take up too much room. The case also comes with built in Velcro strips for cable management which is a huge plus makes the build seem much cleaner. Power Supply : o The power supply I’ve chosen is the Corsair SF SF750 750W 80 PLUS Platinum Modular PSU. The watts the power supply puts out if more than enough to support a gaming PC build on top of designing. I also liked that it as a modular design where I can customize the cabling for my specific needs I hate finding a place to hid extra cables that aren’t used. This power supply is a bit pricy coming in at 167.55 on newegg,
ZACHARY TROTTER 5 but its betting to go with better power supply that way you don’t run the risk of burning up components. Monitor : o For monitor selection I’ve decided to go with 2 27” ASUS TUF VG279QR monitors. While most people opt for one big screen, I do a lot of multi-tasking so its easier to sperate what I’m doing with two monitor. The ASUS is G-sync compatible offer display and HDMI ports have a 165Hz refresh rate and will swivel and pivot on the stock stands. While there are better monitors that will run 4K I’ve never played any game in 4K and don’t intend to. Why run a game at 50FPS in 4K when I can run it at 120+FPS. For me its more functionality than it is how great I can make the picture. The monitors are also decently priced at 179.99 and have a long warranty period at 3 years. Printer : o I’ve never owned a printer because I’ve never seen the need to for anything I do with a computer. if I had to choose one I’d go with the EPSON ECO Tank ET-2800. For me it was more about the printer being compact and wireless. The Epson offers printing, scanning and copying. It is very basic which suites my needs just fine. Apply your thermal paste to your CPU and install your cooling unit (mine is water cooled so I would install the cooling block) Place the board into the case and secure the board to the stand off's once the board is in place your power supply in and secure it to the case. the most important part off installing your power supply is laying out your cables correctly cable management will help you if you ever need to replace parts in the future. As you run the cables place them in their respective places on the board once plugged up if the case some with it use the tie downs if it does not come with it I recommend zip ties but use flush cutters so
ZACHARY TROTTER 7 there are no sharp edges later to cut you when you eventually replace things. Install your ram in the correct configuration for your PC. install your hard drives if that is M.2 there will be slots and screw to install usually with a heat sink on top of them depending on the board my board includes those. if not you will need to install them into the drive bay with the correct hardware. remove the PCIE blanks on the PC and install your graphics card and make sure you add the power wires for it from your power supply. Now that all my pieces are installed, I will add the article cooler which will require heating the tubing and bending it around the case I choose to do this last so I know I can maneuver around my pieces later if there are issues. Before cutting my PC on I will fill the cooler with the liquid it requires and double check for leaks as to not ruin my new build plug in your monitors and all your peripherals keyboard mouse etc ..... now that all of your pieces are installed you can install your OS (I have disk copy of windows but I choose not to add a disk drive to my PC's but I have one that I connect with a SATA cable just to install windows). once the OS is installed on your hard drives you will need to update all the drives and windows itself this could take a while depending on your internet speed.
