Identify industries outside of health care that have deployed innovative management techniques, operational practices, or technology to improve their workforce Organizations and companies like Deloitte have a framework in place that lets them to think about how to equip the future workforce with the right skills to do so. An intuitive and holistic workforce development framework is key for success of an organization. And success increasingly depends on innovation, entrepreneurship, and other forms of creativity that rely not just on skills for the future workforce, but also on capabilities such as critical thinking, emotional intelligence, and collaboration. Organizations need to focus on building skills to cultivating capabilities first and skills second. Developing specific workforce skills to meet short-term needs is required but what is more important is leveraging employees’ passion to engage them in solving unseen and future problems. Shifting the focus away from formal training and traditional education to supporting learning in the flow of work. Moving away from the practice of rewarding employees based on work output to rewarding based on capability development and creating value to the business. These techniques will help the organizations transform from siloed programs, short-term goals, and the organization at the center to integrated programs, long-term goals, with workers at the center. Identify best practices and determine which could be implemented to improve the workforce for a specific health care service, facility, or other health sector-related occupation. Some of the best practices to improve the workforce in a healthcare sector focus on providing effective communication, continued education, decision-making, workforce organization, networking, anticipating challenges, and using technology and technological advancements to improve employee engagement. Just because something has always been done a certain way, it does not mean that is the most effective way to carry out a task. Organizations need to be curious and try to be innovative and more efficient with your tools. Team members that are on the frontlines need to be aware on where the organization is headed and what the leadership is trying to implement. Healthcare leadership should ask those tough questions of all parties involved and avoid making assumptions. Asking questions to the employees can also encourage team members to participate and share ideas.
Another best practice to improve the workforce is for the organization to utilize data and other tools to measure performance of high-performance employees and recognize them accordingly. Similarly, the leadership will be able to spot people who may be struggling so they can receive more training. Healthcare organizations ought to be more specific and transparent about their challenges, desired solutions, decision-making processes, expectations, improvements to strategies and processes, and understanding the vision of business development. Specific expectations like how much time should be set aside for patient interaction which ultimately helps with often seamless implementation and healthy work culture. The only constant in healthcare is change. Healthcare organizations need to make sure that the employees understand the importance of self-improvement which impacts the patient care they provide. Organization needs to provide training on medical procedures and ways to improve staff for organization’s efficiency. Healthcare organizations need to be adaptable to be able to meet the needs of their workforce in different situation including a global pandemic. From charting to telehealth, healthcare organizations should be able to make sound decisions and evolve in every scenario. Patient-centered care demands adaptability. Communication is key for healthcare organizations to improve workforce, which means being able to reach out to employees of variety of personalities and in different modes of communication. Information should be shared in a way that employees are able to grasp the information, through effective emails to the employees. With shorter or non-existent delays between transitions of care, nurses and doctors can actively be aware of room availability, OR (operating room) schedules, and needs of individual patients before being discharged. This allows everyone to do their job more efficiently and helps patients more effectively. Telehealth is a valuable, newer element in healthcare that allows patients to virtually video chat with a doctor or nurse to describe their symptoms or show doctors things like rashes or bumps. They can find out if they need to come in for further testing or diagnosis, get a prescription for medicine, or get medical advice. Telehealth saves both patients and doctors money and time.
