Assess Leadership Skills Do you consider yourself an engaged employee? Absolutely. I almost all the time know what is expected of me at work and have the materials and equipment to do my work right. I do get recognized often for my work and the leadership count my opinions. The mission of the company certainly makes me feel that my job important and how the work I do creates a direct impact and help clinicians provide better healthcare and improve health of the overall population. Did these questions make you think of anything that can be done at your organization to increase employee engagement? These questions made me think of the new opportunities that the organization can provide to their employees so they can do best every day. Comparing services offered by a healthcare organization to that of technology companies like Amazon and Google is not a bad idea and parallels can be drawn with certain aspects of customer satisfaction. Would you add any questions to the list? Only question that I would like to add to the list is if the employees have an idea on what their short term and long-term goals are and how they plan on achieving those goals. How can managers in the health care industry utilize these questions? Engaged employees are critical for providing high-quality patient care. Healthcare organizations can reduce staff turnover which is very important in the current pandemic situation. Many leaders mistake employee happiness with employee engagement. While happy employees may be satisfied at work, engaged employees are truly committed to their organization’s mission and values. Employee engagement has a direct impact on team performance which will lead to higher patient satisfaction rates, increased patient safety, and improved quality of care. One of the ways managers can improve employee engagement is by improving communication. When employees feel like their feedback isn’t heard by leadership, they can easily become disengaged and dissatisfied at work which may have result in bad patient satisfaction. One solution is for managers to conduct regular employment engagement surveys and create an action plan to address feedback. Another approach is employee recognition
program. Without recognition and appreciation, employees can feel invisible and employee recognition will have a powerful impact on staff motivation. Offering learning and development opportunities for healthcare staff has a measurable impact on employee retention. Satisfaction and Leadership Skills What prevents health care from having the same customer satisfaction as Amazon? Providing excellent customer service has always been a necessary component for the success Amazon. Healthcare industry has typically been slower to adapt practices that place a heavy focus on customer satisfaction. Many lessons learned from Amazon can be adapted to help inform improvements to customer service in healthcare. One of the primary pillars of customer satisfaction is providing personalized attention. One of the ways to achieve that can be making available to the patients the portals to view their health record, see test results, browse educational materials, pay bills, schedule appointments, and easily find contact information for their physician without assistance. For maximum convenience, these patient-facing portals will need to be accessible from home computers, personal mobile devices, and ideally from self- service kiosks placed inside a hospital. By continuing broad-spectrum support of patient portals, organizations can save patients’ time and reduce the number of calls to administration, ultimately reducing cost for the organization in doing so. What prevents health care employees from having the same satisfaction as Google employees? Compared to the companies like Google, turnover rate in healthcare industry is higher and a well-known challenge for healthcare providers. Some of the ways the former is better than the latter is: Creating employee development plans - Employees who feel uncertain about career growth in their current positions will gravitate toward organizations that offer more certainty for the future or an immediate advancement. However, if the staff feels their career path ahead is clear and marked with milestones, they will have something toward which to work. They will believe their contribution has a positive impact on the practice and that the organization values and benefits from their efforts. Employees who have access to meaningful training and development opportunities are more engaged. Moreover, research has found that consistent development opportunities can decrease employee turnover and produce up to twice the revenue per worker. Also adding some

fun to the organizations’ culture enhances employee relationships, boosts morale, and doesn’t have to come at the expense of productivity. What are the leadership skills or attributes necessary to accomplish that objective? Leadership attributes like being compassionate to the employees is very important. Working with each employee to define the path that best serves their needs and those of the practice and its patients. Laying out the precise milestones a staff member will need to attain to realize the plan. With defined and measurable goals, each member of your staff will understand what’s expected of them and what they’ll be measured against to be considered successful. Managers can also use goals to keep employees on track, which will improve their performance, and by extension, overall satisfaction with their jobs.
