Comp 3 – Assessment Part 1 Personal Health Care Leadership Purpose Statement Abdul Sameer Shaik University of Phoenix MHA: 542: Leading with Authenticity in The Health Sector 10/15/2021 Debi Williams
Who am I as a leader? What is my leadership purpose? How can I remain authentic? Being a leader doesn’t just mean running, control, or supervise. Leaders’ words carry more weight and their actions are watched more closely. I’m not accountable just for my own results, but also for the results of others. How I handle tough decisions as a leader sets the tone for how the employees operate. Best leaders focus on doing one thing. I try to understand what intrinsically motivates people and create an environment that allows people to tap into that intrinsic motivation themselves. I’m not telling anyone what to do and I’m not controlling anyone or exerting influence on anyone. I’m not even trying to empower anyone. People already have innate talents, gifts, and capabilities within them. My job as a leader is merely to provide an environment for those inherent qualities to come to light. Finding my leadership purpose is about understanding my goals and what I want to achieve. A person with purpose talks about future possibilities in a positive way and shows commitment to their vision. My leadership purpose is to be authentic, to be someone who can be counted on, to always bring value, to be the strongest advocate for my team, to drive results, and to motivate commitment. The book, Finding Your True North: A Personal Guide it states that authenticity requires a leader to be genuine and have a passion for their purpose which means being true to yourself and to what you believe in. In health care organizations, leaders need to make smart decisions, ensure accountability, lead change and have the ability to change and transform in a way that people can trust. As a leader, I can remain authentic by showing empathy. Effective leadership requires the ability to think outside of your role, which in turn necessitates collaboration, taking the initiative, and setting up effective feedback loops. It is vital for a good leader to have the ability to demonstrate a professional level of calmness and self-awareness in difficult situations and this is where emotional intelligence comes in. Trust comes from understanding each other's values and understanding our experiences and what we stand for. For that to happen, we've got to be vulnerable, and we must be open. It is important for me to authentic and transparent as an effective leader. What insights from the course will you use immediately, and what strategies will you have to work on? Things learnt in the course that would help you be successful in leadership? To create the best working environment for your team, you must create clarity. People knowing what needs to happen, why the work is important, and what success looks like?
Employees should know how their work fits into the bigger picture. They should be taught that the standard of quality needs to be met before their work is shipped or goes live. One of the insights that I learnt from the course and will readily apply to be the best manager is by constantly clarifying these things in meetings, in emails, during one-on-ones. They also ask their team, what is not clear or what is confusing. Without clarity around the work, the work can’t get done well. There is literally no one else on the team whose job it is to create this clarity. It’s is solely up to me, as a manager, to make things as clear as possible. Next, people need to be provided with context. As an employee, there’s nothing more frustrating than being expected to execute something and they don’t have enough context to execute it well. As a manager, asking the question, what do you need from me to be successful? can help me uncover what context I need to give my team, so they feel supported. My success as a manager is contingent on how honest people are willing to be with me. Without people shooting me straight as a leader, I won’t be able to course-correct should things start to go wrong. For example, if a project starts to run behind, will someone bring that up proactively to me so I can take immediate action. Describe an area of your work or life that you have identified as a place where you could execute more effectively. One of the areas in my work that I could execute more effectively is to create a safe environment for my team to speak up starts with going first and showing vulnerability as a leader. For instance, do I admit when I’m struggling with something as a manager? If so, that will give others permission to admit where they’re struggling too. Or, when an employee points out a mistake, do I thank them for being forthcoming and commend their honesty? Considering how every action I take as a manager is an opportunity to show your team that it’s safe to say what’s on their minds. Asking meaningful questions is a core tenant of what makes a manager good at their job. When I ask questions as a manager, I show that I care and have a deep interest in learning more about your team. As a result, I foster a sense of psychological safety in the workplace. And I also give myself an opportunity to unlock valuable information that I might not have known about before. Communicating effectively and speaking with purpose are crucial skills for all leaders. I have been working on my communication skills to be a better leader. LinkedIn post: https://www.linkedin.com/pulse/who-am-i-leader-what-my-leadership-purpose- sameer-shaik
