CS 100 Ethics in IT Assignment The internet has transformed and revolutionized how people obtain, process and use information. From its first beginnings, using large switch boards to access simple information to using smart devices in our hands to get any information we want within seconds. Today, with rising prices due to inflation, many are considering cutting down on their costs by sharing the internet with neighbors or friends. This ever growing need to be constantly connected, some are beginning to wonder if it is ethical, safe and legal. When thinking about safety, one must think of all the possibilities and outcomes of sharing the internet. If you and your neighbor decide to share an internet connection there could be potential risks for yourself. One of the main characteristics researchers all agree on, is trusting the person you are sharing the internet connection with. The reason that trust is so important is because, once you give a person access to your internet they essentially have access to you. The process in which it takes to share the internet is as simple as sharing a password. (PC World) Once shared, both parties have access to everything on the router; this includes files, encrypted or not. Another aspect to think about when thinking about the safety of sharing the internet is that if proper firewalls are not put in place, each party is able to see each other's search history and what they actively do on the internet. Lastly it is important to remember if one of the parties gets a virus or malware it can affect your hardware. What this means is, if you check your banking info on any device connected to your internet that is shared, the person sharing could
essentially get your information and rob you. It is important to remember that there are steps and technology to prevent these. (Rockspace) Ensuring you have a firewall is one of those precautions, another would be to add another router. Something all parties should question before sharing internet connection is if it is legal. While it is not a criminal offense to share your internet with your neighbor, it could be violating the terms and agreements with your internet service provider or ISP for short. By sharing the internet you are potentially robbing the ISP company of another customer. This loss could upset the company and they could take action, though this action we speak of probably consists of a fine or a termination of services.(Notenboom) While researching the legalities of sharing the internet, it did not look like jail time would be one of the punishments for sharing wifi or internet connection with your neighbor. As long as the actions of the sharing were consensual and non illegal acts were done to obtain or use against it. (Rockspace) Another general census among researchers is the severity of the punishment. Most simply state it is a case by case basis and each should be reviewed and pursued differently. When thinking about the ethics of sharing the internet, one must ask themselves if this is agreed upon from both parties. If both you and your neighbor consider the pros and cons of sharing internet connection and put forth the proper precautions to avoid malware and accidental information sharing, many agree it is ethical from a consumer point of view. While these forums are not research based, with rising prices many agree that if it is all agreed upon and in good faith, why not? If a person is stealing wifi or internet connection without the other person's knowledge is unethical and is actually a crime under the Computer Misuse Act of 1990.
