Running head: UNIT II ASSIGNMENT 1 Unit II Assignment John Perkins FIR 5301 Fire Protection Technology Dr. Steven Gillespie July 18, 2023
UNIT II ASSIGNMENT 2 Unit II Assignment While reviewing the live stream for this week, I found there to be several interesting topics that were covered. I am the Occupational Safety Superintendent for my base so I am familiar with OSHA standards, but this course will hopefully help me to understand some NFPA standards and why they are in place better. 1. The first thing that I took from the video was when you spoke about the fire protection systems at the beginning of the lecture and the way they are a proactive way to prevent hazards. We always talk about proactive safety at work, and I never really think of a fire protection system as a proactive system but they definitely are. They are just in place as a reaction to the hazard of a fire. 2. The second thing that I took from the lecture was talking about emergency exit lighting. We always inspect it as part of an annual safety inspection and OSHA has requirements for emergency egress lighting so I never think of it as a fire protection system, but they definitely are. 3. Last but certainly not least, when you spoke about fire protection systems being adequate for the application. I have never really thought about BTUs being applicable when designing sprinkler systems, but your example of a Lowe’s lumber yard was great. All that lumber will likely burn a lot hotter than a standard office space and the fire protection system will need to be up to the task of fighting the hotter fire. I enjoyed the lecture and it helps to solidify some concepts that we might miss in a normal online class.
