SCS 100 Module One Activity Template Melissa Benway Advertisement Selection Select four advertisements for analysis: Google: Body Type Pantene: #SeeBeautyNotGender Hyundai: Smaht Pahk Apple: A Climate Change Promise from Apple Explain why you selected your four advertisements to analyze. Google: Body Type o I have selected this one because of the way it makes me feel about myself, it almost invokes a sense of pride and acceptance for myself. When I was growing up all the societal influences told us thin is in. It was never about healthy choices or nutrition it was whether you had a thigh gap or wore size 3 jeans that barely covered you in more than one uncomfortable to talk about area. And that was the teen/young adult culture of my time from my eyes. So, from the time I was a teenager up until my 30 th birthday, I was consistently consumed with either losing weight or keeping it off, even during and especially after both my pregnancies. I hate the way we body shame and change or form our identities around someone else’s perception. At the same time, I feel that as empowering it is to support and love yourself, our society has become almost too accepting of the self-love concept and that unhealthy lifestyles are no longer concerns for change. I’m not saying that society should shame people into changing their health statuses but maybe promote more content that promotes healthy habits. Pantene: #SeeBeautyNotGender o This one kind of goes along with up I mentioned in my introductory post of “do no harm”. I believe everyone deserves acceptance; everybody just loves everybody. Now I know that is a completely unrealistic concept, but I stand by it. If someone’s path to happiness causes no harm or danger to my life or the life of others, then I will support them all the way. I feel that not only does this ad advocate for the transgender community but also to the identified males. The message to me is that everyone deserves to enjoy self-care and pampering. Hyundai: Smaht Pahk o I picked this because while it is really funny, my husband and I were saying smaht pahk for days after watching it, I can also see how it may come off as offensive or stereotyping a regional society. My husband is from Massachusetts and yes that is absolutely a Boston accent mostly the ad really exaggerated it, but I am from the south, the deep south, and honestly, I think I would take it offensively if it were the other way around. I suppose it goes along with generalizing a population based on geological location and that’s not right. Not every person in Boston sounds like that, just like not every person in the south has a twang. The more I sit here and think about it, and once again while it is funny it does remind me of a schoolhouse bully picking and making fun, sometimes with innocent intentions but sometimes not to gather laughs of bystanders. Almost in the 1
same way that even a comment made with good intentions can still hurt the feelings of the intended audience. Apple: A Climate Change Promise from Apple o This one sang to my poor mommy heart. I love babies and all the promise and joy they bring. While I do support and enjoyed the message behind it for more ecofriendly big business, I kind of felt sad watching it. I think that feeling may be tied to current events in my life and with political and economic events. Or maybe I was feeling fearful for the future because the world we live in is hard these days and maybe it will always be this hard. But there’s also some distrust there that I was feeling because there is so much truth bending in the world of big business. Explain how your advertisements relate to current events or to modern society. Google: Body Type o This ad supports the “no body shaming” and “love yourself” campaigns. Pantene: #SeeBeautyNotGender o I think this ad relates to the growing transgender and self-acceptance concepts of modern society. Hyundai: Smaht Pahk o This one reflects the technological advancements of society. A society around convenience and efficiency. Apple: A Climate Change Promise from Apple o This one reflects larger societal concerns of environmental conservation and sustainability. 2
