SCS 100 Module Four Activity Template Describe the underlying meanings or socially significant messages each of your advertisements communicates. Google: Body Shape o The message is that human bodies come in all different shapes and sizes, and that’s okay. This message is socially significant in that it tells modern society, that we don’t have to conform to previous social perspectives that labeled and defined what body types are accepted or valued, but that together we can break away from negative body image affirmations and accept people as they come, including ourselves. Pantene: #SeeBeautyNotGender o In this one I believe the message was beauty shouldn’t be gender specific. There’s beauty in happiness, pride, and acceptance. The ad narrates about how gender doesn’t define a person’s work ethic or determination and therefore neither should society. Hyundai: Smaht Pahk o I don’t believe there is really any underlying meaning behind this advertisement other than Hyundai displaying their latest smart car. The exaggerated Boston accent could be seen as socially significant by enforcing preexisting stereotypes of localized population. Apple: A Climate Change Promise from Apple o The message is a promise to change for the betterment of environmental health. Apple is saying, “We know that we are damaging valuable natural resources, and we plan to change/reduce our resource consumption.” It’s socially significant in that the message connects to society on an emotional level because it’s a promise being made to an infant and as a society, we place value on promises. Write a research question based on a social science perspective and related to at least one of your advertisements. What role does gender exclusion in modern media play on enforcing the male doctrine of masculinity in the U.S.? And how/why does the idea of masculinity hinder emotional intelligence and regulation on male identities? o Google: Body type o Apple: A Climate Change Promise from Apple Describe how you used a social science perspective to create your research question. I believe I best approached this question from a sociologist’s perspective. I saw a trend in my advertisements, where there was a strong lack of male presence and/or appeal. This led to me ask why aren’t men included in modern media and culture? And what could be gained or lost from their inclusion? I’ve sought my husband’s perspective here and there through the weeks, as I am completing my assignments and it bothered me that I could feel some many emotions, whilst my husband didn’t appear to feel any. I decided to dive a little deeper by enlisting the help of my husband and his coworkers (male and female) and sent them the Apple: A Climate Change Promise from Apple ad for them to view and afterwards share their initial thoughts and feelings. As I suspected, the message resonated more emotions in the women than the men, but why? In a modern society being built around humility and acceptance why hasn’t the stigma of male 1
masculinity been shaken off and what does this mean for future generations in terms of emotional intelligence? 2
