SCS 100 Module Four Activity Template Replace the bracketed text below with your responses. Support your responses with specific details and examples from your advertisements. You do not need to conduct outside research, but if you use sources, cite them using APA style. Describe the underlying meanings or socially significant messages each of your advertisements communicates. Panasonic: Your Inner Man o The underlying message in this advertisement is that we do not all fit in the same mold; men or women. Being a manly man doesn’t necessarily mean that you are a six-pack guy with muscles. You can be an average bodied man with healthy confidence, and a certain level of comfort in one’s own body. Shaving objects not considered manly by others in this advertisement is a sign of man “pushing the boundaries” that have been set by our society. Toyota: 2020 Toyota Big Game Commercial: Ft Cobie Smulders o The message in this advertisement is that the Toyota Highlander can go wherever it is needed. This is shown when the vehicle appears in different types of terrains and climates; i.e. sand, dirt, snow, and city. It attempts to make you feel like a hero when driving their vehicle as in every scene the driver, Cobie Smulders, is rescuing a stranded person. Apple: A Climate Change Promise from Apple o The socially significant message in this advertisement is that a major company like Apple is recognizing the problem with burning fossil fuels and the impact that it has on the environment. The company uses the voice of a hidden speaker acting as the company, to talk to an infant who represents a young member of our future society. The company promises to be carbon neutral by 2030. Burger King: Reduced Methane Whoppers o The underlying message in this advertisement is that Burger King is informing the viewer that it is aware of its role in the contribution to greenhouse gasses. After conducting research on ways to minimize these gasses, they have found that lemon grass consumption helps with cattle indigestion. This reduces the amount of gas released into the atmosphere; helping minimize the negative impact to the environment and climate change. Write a research question based on a social science perspective and related to at least one of your advertisements. A research question could be, how does environmental awareness affect how the consumer does business? There are many people in the world that are aware of the negative effects that are impacting our environment that were created by companies like Apple and Burger King. There are some advocates that would rather spend their money at environmentally friendly companies paying for sustainable products than to contribute to environmental issues by buying from companies that hurt the environment; even if the price to go green is higher. 1
Describe how you used a social science perspective to create your research question. I used sociology as a perspective to create my question as it is the study of social change and the consequences of human behavior. This provides a broad view of the subject. Another perspective would be psychology. As psychology is more centered on the individual person’s mind and behavior, this would be a good perspective to join with sociology. Together, they will provide me with the opportunity to look at things from a wide society angle and from a more intimate individual view. The environment is changing, and not for the better. This is due to the actions of us humans. The negative impact we have on our environment has caused many us to look for different ways to do our part to fix our actions. Some of us have chosen to go green, feed our animals a better diet, and even plant trees instead of cutting them down. Yet there are still those who don’t care and will continue with their business as usual. 2
