SCS 100 Module Three Activity Template Replace the bracketed text below with your responses. Support your responses with specific details and examples from your advertisements. You do not need to conduct outside research, but if you use sources, cite them using APA style. Describe how groups and/or cultures are presented in all your advertisements. 2020 Toyota Big Game Commercial Ft. Cobie Smulders o In this advertisement, there are individuals of multiple races, of the male and female gender, of multiple walks of life; such as the family being chased by bandits on horses and the professional chemical scientists. It also shows individuals of different generations or age groups. Panasonic: You Inner Man o In this advertisement, there are 3 men shown. The men are of different races. The men are of different skin color. The men are all fit. Each man has an outline cut out of their chest hair. Each of the outlines represents what each feels inside of themselves. Two of the men have no facial hair while one does. Two of the men are wearing blue jeans and one is wearing sport pants with draw strings. Apple: A Climate Change Promise from Apple o In this advertisement, there is an infant child depicted. The child is sleeping on top of a bed. The child is of a melanin complexion. The child has a pony tail on top of its head. Burger King: Reduced Methane Whoppers o In this advertisement, there are several young children shown. The children are multicultural and multigendered. The children are singing and dancing. There are also adults shown in this advertisement. The adults are multicultural and of different age groups. Some of the adults are dressed in business attire while others are dressed more casual. Describe the representation of stereotypes in all your advertisements. 2020 Toyota Big Game Commercial Ft. Cobie Smulders o The stereotype in this advertisement is the fact that Toyota is showing their vehicle as a vehicle that you can always count on. There are several different scenarios where there is a bad situation going on; chemical leak, attack from bandits, a monster on the loose. The advertisement tries to entice the viewer to buy their product as you can count on it in any situation. Realisticly, any piece of machinery can fail at any time. We do not have any control over what happens to the product. We can do our best to extend the life of the product but we can never gurantee that it will not fail. Panasonic: You Inner Man o This advertisement has the stereotype that a fit muscular man feels like a man inside his body. The fact is that how you show on the outside doesn’t mean that it is how you feel in the inside. You can be fit and muscular and still be feminine of have feminine traits. The same could be said if there were 3 females depicted in this advertisement. Apple: A Climate Change Promise from Apple o Companies that build and provide products to the world are constantly being harassed by environmental activists and labeled as one of the main causes for the climate issues we suffer today. This is a stereotype because as technology advances, there are people 1
trying to find better and healthier ways to do things. In the advertisement, Apple is pledging to change the way they do business to be more green or better for the environment by being carbon free by the time the child turns 10. Eventhough Apple is changing internal processes for the better, the outside world will continue to blame them for contributing to the climate issue because of how big the company is and how many products they offer to the world. Burger King: Reduced Methane Whoppers o In this advertisement, a stereotype that can be associated is the same as the Apple advertisement; that Burger King is a major contributor to the greenhouse effects on our planet. As a provider of beef products, Burger King needs those cows in order to continue to provide their products to the consumer. There may be some that think that Burger King must shut down in order to help make the planet better. However, Burger King is commited to doing their part in reducing the harmful effects of their business on the planet. They are doing so by finding ways to reduce the the indigestion of their animals; which are letting gas into the atmosphere. The gas will still be released into the atmosphere but at a much lesser rate. It is not a final solution but a start to finding the best way to help the planet. Discuss how your beliefs, assumptions, and/or values may have influenced how you analyzed your advertisements: In the beginning, I chose these advertisements strictly by their titles. Each appealed to me individually. I like Toyota as I own one of their veicles. I chose Apple as I own and trust their products. I chose Panasonic because it’s an electronic company that I have used before. I was also curious about what “Your Inner Man” dealt with. I chose Burger King because, I eat there once a month and the title stated “reduced methane whoppers”. Methane is a bad gas and I wanted to see how Burger King contributed to it. On my initial view of the advertisements, I saw them in my accustomed way with the influence of my beliefs, assumptions, and biases. For example, the Toyota advertisement was positive to me. The vehicle was nice and the way it was shown to be “reliable” boosted my already positive view of the company. As I analyzed the Panasonic advertisement, I saw three very fit and masculine men. I thought that the shaved hair was weird but that it was done to prove that they are confident enough in their masculinity that they could do that. As I looked at it again, I saw the small print that said “a man is someone brave enough to show the world who he is”. These shavings depicted how they felt inside. I was looking at it from my angle only; being muscular and masculine and not caring what other thought. I now know that there are many different angles to look at. You have to go in with an open mind and try to see things for what they are and not what you think they are. 2
