Week 2 COM/501 Yusef Cody
Adulthood encompasses various developmental challenges. During this period a common thread is shown in the independence of the individual. Becoming a member of society with more responsibilities and social relationships. This period of a person’s life allows for an identity outside of the main family unit. Individuals are perceived as adults and can form complex cognitive problem-solving and socio-emotional relationships. The cognitive changes that I have experienced during adulthood are derived from pervious years. New experiences and developments occur in adulthood, but for the most part the cognitive growth during this period is mainly concerned about change and commitment. According to Erik Erikson’s development theory, early adulthood focuses on intimacy vs. isolation. Because of this stage, the concern for complex cognitive reasoning is more centered around the ability to form lasting relationships and commitments. The cognitive ability to form recognition and decide the best option creates a better understanding on which path the person wants their life to consist of. I personally experience changes in new relationships and friendships and the best way to preserve and maintain those relationships. Another personal challenge I face is taking care of my sister who has special needs and my mother who had multiple strokes. I am responsible for making sure my sister is safe, healthy, happy, and taken care of. My sister is mentally delayed so I must teach her and watch over her as I would a young child. My mother has memory problems due to her strokes so I make myself responsible for remembering what she needs. This personal challenge has made me become stronger and appreciate the life that I have. I am grateful for my loving family and I believe that my experiences can help me become a great counselor.
