Adolescent social development is often described as the process of establishing a sense of identity and establishing a role and purpose. It is an outwards sense of oneself. Body image is a key factor in developing a sense of self and identity, especially for girls, and the family and increasingly peers play an important role assisting and supporting the adolescent to achieve adult roles. Risk-taking is a natural part of the adolescent journey. Erikson argues that adolescents strive to discover their strengths and weaknesses and the roles they can best play in their future lives. Erikson calls this the identity- versus-identity-confusion stage. In contrast, those who are successful in forging an appropriate identity set a course that provides a foundation for future psychosocial development. They learn their unique capabilities and believe in them, and they develop an accurate sense of who they are. They are prepared to set out on a path that takes full advantage of what their unique strengths permit them to do. Obtaining self-awareness is a crucial component to better understand yourself and others around you. When contemplating therapeutic aid, it is important that the counselor is unbiased and culturally inclusive. Learning about different cultures and specific behaviors derived from cultures will help comprehend various strategies for multiple individuals. In this personal analysis, a description of the cognitive and socio-emotional changes I have experienced during adulthood will be given, a depiction of any personal challenges I faced in adulthood, explanation of challenges I experienced affected my family, social life, career, and leisure time, and finally, identify specific experiences that will be of assists when counseling adults.
